Where in the brain is abstract map generated? It is the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), working together!! Here is our new finding published in @Nature Prefrontal and lateral entorhinal neurons co-dependently learn item–outcome rules

Our new paper is out in Neuron @NeuroCellPress We found that "remapping" of hippocampus place cells is disrupted in Alzheimer's disease model, suggesting a circuit mechanism causing spatial memory impairment in AD. 3yr-work by Heechul Jun @jun_heechul !

昨年より、文科省とJSTに日本の若手研究者が国際的に見て困難な状況にある、という説明をしてきました。諸外国では新しく研究室を構えると初期資金（スタートアップ資金、数千万～数億円）が与えられますが、日本ではこの仕組がほとんどなく、若手がラボを持つのが困難な状況を生み出しています。

JP: 新しい論文を科学誌Neuronに発表しました。脳の海馬には異なる場所を区別する「リマッピング」と呼ばれる機能がありますが、アルツハイマー病ではこの機能が失われている事を見いだしました。将来アルツハイマー病患者さんの空間記憶障害を治療できるかもしれません。

私たちの最近の研究をまとめた記事を、日経サイエンスに書かせて頂きました。 アルツハイマー病では脳細胞が死ぬことが原因で記憶を失うと思われていました。 でも実はそうではなく、脳細胞の調子が悪くなるからであることが最近の研究から分かってきました。

これを受けて、JSTさきがけ研究者限定の「スタートアップ支援制度」が新年度から出来ます。4月以降PIになるさきがけ研究者は総額数億円の中から追加支援を受けられます。さきがけ研究者でなくても受けられるスタートアップ支援制度が今後増えていくと良いと思います。

びっくりしたのは、JSTも文科省の担当者の方も、この問題を全くご存じなかったことです。 いま若手研究環境の問題が叫ばれていますが、多くの問題が行政サイドにはほとんど理解されていないのかもしれません。当事者がしっかり声をあげることが重要なようです。

来年2020年の日本神経科学学会の公募シンポジウムの審査をしてるのですが、「男性のみ」のシンポジウムの応募があまりに多くて唖然。。。 日本神経科学学会も、ヨーロッパのFENSのように男女・若手シニアがバランスよく入っている提案だけを受け付けるようにした方がいいかもしれません。

JST CRESTオプトバイオの班会議に入れて貰い、短いトークをしました。Nature等トップジャーナルにrevisionになっている仕事が次々発表されていく躍動感はCRESTならでは。一方、約200名の参加者のうち女性は一割、大学院生も一割なのはちょっと不自然…彼ら彼女らは一体どこにいってしまったのでしょう?

My grandma was diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease when she was 78. She suffered for 15 YEARS, gradually losing her personality until she passed away. Let's combat Alzheimer's disease #WorldAlzheimersDay @Alzheimers_NIH @_BrightFocus @alzassociation

Had a session on reward representation in EC-HPC circuit w/ @ChaBoccara @lisa_giocomo and @attila_losonczy in @jnsorg annual meeting in Okinawa. I just wish Japan had less restriction for foreign travelers so they could join in-person and enjoy gorgeous beaches w/ their family..
