Breaking open this quartzite erratic in Moses Coulee was an "Aha!" moment for me. Those red grains amidst the quartz crystals are garnet, an important clue about the metamorphic grade and likely location of the bedrock source.

While minor plagiarism is not great, much more damaging to science is the pervasiveness of fake data in peer-reviewed literature. Science is supposed to be an edifice constructed of solid findings. If we can't be confident in data quality, the building collapses.

Uggh. I reported concerns about this 2013 @PLOSNTDs paper to the journal in October 2015, when the paper was just 2y old. Last week, the journal issued an Expression of Concern, stating that the original data was no longer available.

I traveled 2300 km in the State of Mato Grosso Brazil and the scenario of soybean crops is the same, entire crops dying, the rains did not arrive and those that did arrive were in low volume or in indigenous reserves, in this stretch that I covered I did not see any beautiful

To build on this, I identified the substation and manually traced the burn area from Maxar satellite imagery. As suggested by Peter, it appears that the fire originated at or near what appears to be an electrical substation and was spread by winds out of the NE.

Per this imagery, you can track where the Lahaina grass/brush fire started and moved downwind into the city. To me it looks like the terminus is at/near this electrical substation πŸ‘€

Can't get over the lidar of these moraine ridges near the maximum extent of the Okanogan lobe. I had been calling these recessional moraines (each moraine a different age), but I'm starting to think they are actually subglacial crevasse-squeeze ridges formed at the same time
