Alex Garland’s MEN is breathtaking on so many levels to its gorgeous cinematography to its stunning performance by Jessie Buckley. It’s also haunting, disturbing & absolutely terrifying. I loved every riveting second of it. Definitely reminiscent of Bergman’s HOUR OF THE WOLF.
Like Alex Garland in CIVIL WAR, Ingmar Bergman’s vision of war in SHAME was criticized for not assigning blame to any party. But what they both accomplish without glorification in their films is far more powerful—presenting war as chaotic, confusing, devastating, & dehumanizing.
Ingmar Bergman’s all time favorite film was the 1921 masterpiece, THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE directed by Victor Sjöström. It explores the legend that the last person to die on New Year’s Eve has to drive Death’s carriage and collects the souls of everybody that dies the following year.
THE SEVENTH SEAL released 63 yrs ago today to amazing reviews helping launch the intl arthouse scene in the U.S. Bergman was surprised by its success describing it as “the little film that he and and friends made one summer” & was moved that it profoundly affected so many people.
TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY released 33 years ago today. It changed the lives of a generation of filmgoers — inspiring them to become directors, special effects artists, sound designers, or work in the movie business. It was also the film that made me fall in love with movies.
HOUR OF THE WOLF was released 55 years ago today in Sweden. It was shot partly on location at Hovs Hallar where Ingmar Bergman filmed the opening scene of THE SEVENTH SEAL. Bergman was terrified of birds and there are multiple bird references throughout the film to elicit terror.
How perfect that U.S. Mother’s Day and Terminator Day fall on the same date this year! On this day 40 years ago, Kyle Reese traveled across time to save Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance.
PAST LIVES is a profound story about the power of human connection. It’s a work of art that is so beautiful, poetic, & heartbreaking that it completely wrecked me. Celine Song infuses her directorial debut with tremendous depth and introspection. What a staggering accomplishment.
HOUR OF THE WOLF was released 56 years ago today in Sweden. It was shot partly on location at Hovs Hallar where Ingmar Bergman filmed the opening scene of THE SEVENTH SEAL. Bergman was terrified of birds and there are multiple bird references throughout the film to elicit terror.
THE SEVENTH SEAL released 66 yrs ago today in Sweden to extraordinary reviews helping launch the int’l arthouse scene in America when it released there later that year. Bergman was surprised by its success describing it as “the little film that me and my friends made one summer.”
Today Sony Pictures is welcoming back its phase 1 return to work employees! Last night, I was so giddy with excitement! I felt like I was getting ready for my first day of school! They gave us a free lunch voucher for the commissary and this awesome GHOSTBUSTERS shirt!

. He once said his prophets were Bach & Beethoven because they showed him another world. Thanks for giving us a window into the human soul through your lens, Ingmar. You will forever be my cinematic prophet.

The NYTimes called Bibi Andersson “luminous” in their obit today. There is no better word to describe the actress who lit up the screen with her beautiful soul as Mia in THE SEVENTH SEAL & the two Saras in WILD STRAWBERRIES. She also inspired Bergman to write these characters.
I thought my heart was going to explode out of my chest for the last hour of AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER. Cameron is the director that made me fall in love with movies at 14 with T2 & this film is another stunning cinematic achievement to add to his filmography. The ending is magic.

Woke up to the news that the great Max von Sydow has died. I was just podcasting & celebrating him yesterday. He was my favorite of Ingmar Bergman’s cinematic alter egos & his iconic role of The Knight in THE SEVENTH SEAL changed world cinema forever. What an incredibly sad day.
You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. Check out my birthday cake theme this year- THE TWILIGHT ZONE!!
Ingmar Bergman was born 101 years ago today. Most of you know that he is my favorite director of all time. He changed my life when I discovered his films 18 years ago. I hope to continue to honor and preach about his legacy for the rest of my life.

Ingmar Bergman once said that “nothing frightens people more than incomprehensible, unexplainable evil.” Listen to

Happy 53rd anniversary to Star Trek! Thanks for helping shape who I am today, and giving me hope for a future where humanity is united and our differences are celebrated. You have given me endless hours of joys since my childhood.

Oh gosh, it actually happened. The first film in nearly 20 years I helped market won an Oscar! Congrats to the Spider-Verse filmmakers, Sony Pictures Animation & the Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing Team!! We never stop believing in this film!!! 🎉🕷🌎

Loneliness was a central theme in Ingmar Bergman’s films. The idea that you could be left alone by those you love was the most terrifying thing he could imagine. As we enter Holy Week today, here’s a heartbreaking scene about loneliness from WINTER LIGHT.
One of my annual traditions is watching SCROOGED in 35mm at the

So my daughter lost her first tooth today and my mom texted me this envelope with my tooth that I wrote when I was 8. I was really worried about all my heroes dying of AIDS in the 80s. 🤦🏻♀️
TERMINATOR 2:JUDGMENT DAY released 27 years ago today changing my life forever. This is the film that made me fall in love with movies. Here is a personal essay I wrote last year about this sci-fi masterpiece:

Happy Birthday to

! This summer marks 25 years since we met as interns. He has changed my life in so many ways from taking me to my first Ingmar Bergman film to giving me my first podcast guest appearance. Here’s to 25 more years of friendship and being in awe of him!
Ingmar Bergman was born on this day 105 years ago. He captured the human soul like no other filmmaker. Through his lens he showed us that there are brief instances in life of such exquisite beauty that they compensate for all the misery and unhappiness.

11 years ago, I convinced my entire wedding party including my Dad to pose for this BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Last Supper inspired photo. So say we all!
24 years ago today, I started my career in the movie business working as an assistant at Twentieth Century Fox! This is a picture of my birthday cake from the weekend before I started. The date on the cake is when I got offered the job & I predicted T3 would be made one day!
When I was working at Fox in 2002, my friends in the Fox Costume Department dug up the dress Holly Hunter wore at this dinner so I could see it in person. Here’s a pic of my 25-year-old self geeking out with the dress!

For 6 months, the image of 3 women walking around in a red room in white clothes kept returning to Ingmar Bergman. Soon he could hear them whispering. Later he realized they were watching over a 4th women who was dying and wrote the script for CRIES AND WHISPERS.

Our amazing film, A MAN CALLED OTTO is now available to steam on Netflix today! If you missed it in theaters, see it now! It’s wonderful and life affirming.
29 years ago today, the hilarious and wonderful DEFENDING YOUR LIFE directed by the extraordinary Albert Brooks premiered in the U.S. This is the perfect film to revisit during this stressful time. It’s pure magic.
Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece, THE SEVENTH SEAL debuted to the world 61 years ago this week. Life would never be the same for international cinema and its fans.

I practically blacked out when I saw the prototype of this T-800 endoarm & CPU at the

booth at Comic Con 2018. Months later, it went on sale & I bought it. But it took 3 years to travel across time to get to me. It was worth the wait.
#NoFate
When Ingmar Bergman was a child, his parents would use silence as punishment if he did something wrong & sometimes wouldn’t speak to him for a whole day or more. In his films, he used silence to represent dysfunctional communication between people, or man & God.

My 9-year-old daughter woke up this Sunday morning and asked me if she could see her first episode of STAR TREK: TOS. So I showed her “The Devil in the Dark” and she loved it! I’ll always remember this day! 🖖🏽
Happy Terminator Day! On this day 39 years ago, Kyle Reese came across time to save Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance.

One of Ingmar Bergman’s absolute favorite films was the 1921 masterpiece, THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE directed by Victor Sjöström. It explores the legend that the last person to die on New Year’s Eve has to drive Death’s carriage & collect the souls of everybody that dies the next year.
54 years ago today, HOUR OF THE WOLF written & directed by Ingmar Bergman released in Sweden. Before shooting, Bergman told his actors his idea for the film was that a woman handed him her husband’s diary & he convinced her to let him record her talking about their life together.

Ingmar Bergman was born 102 years ago today. I’ve been honoring him all year starting with my Bergman 101 six hour lecture I gave at UC Riverside in Jan, my Bergman-themed birthday cake in Feb, and podcasting about him in March and June. Ingmar Bergman Disciple for life! 🎞 🥳
A Yosemite park ranger just called me a “loud and proud Trekkie” when I cheered after she asked if there were any Star Trek fans on the Yosemite Valley Floor tour. She then gave the tour of 50+ people some FINAL FRONTIER local history! 🖖🏽
Bergman’s farewell to his own religious upbringing, WINTER LIGHT released in the United States 55 year ago today. He said that he knew it was a difficult film, but it was made out of the true spiritual crisis that he was trying for years to describe.
