This is classic. Replies from women are "yes! We prefer to be thought of as leaders, not princesses". Replies from men are "you are wrong", "not to be pedantic...", and "Leia will always be a princess to me." This is why we want to be generals, gentlemen.

@rene_dionne4 @wonderofscience Volcanologist here. This is real, and this is exactly how it's done. Most sturdy shoes are fine on lava--it cools rapidly. Stitched-on soles are preferred, as glued-on soles can sometimes unglue, and that sucks for the hike back.

@emdashklatt No one else was traumatized by The Diamond Necklace? A woman borrows, and loses, a friend's diamond necklace. She works herself near to death, and destroys her life to replace it. Years later she runs into the friend who loaned the necklace and learns that the diamonds were fake.

@_roryturnbull Hello, I'm a seismologist in a geologic disaster movie. I have a radical theory about earthquakes that no one believes, yet proves to be true. Only my ideas can explain the monstrously large earthquakes that are rocking the US West coast. We fix them with nukes.

@rene_dionne4 @wonderofscience Fun facts to address some of the questions here: 1. Basaltic lava is about 1100 degrees C. 2. Steel melts around 1400-1500 degrees C. 3. Iron melts around 1500 degrees C. 4. A welding arc is ~4000 degrees C. Lots of things humans work with are hotter than lava.

@LogantekGeo @rene_dionne4 @wonderofscience A drop of lava would cool pretty quickly and would be unlikely to burn through your boots. Honestly, despite the drama, getting burnt by lava is not a huge hazard, at least if you're talking about pahoehoe toes like these.

Looks like coupling of the air wave from the Hunga Ha`apai eruption with the ocean created tsunami waves in the Caribbean. So this is particular tsunami was generated by an atmospheric wave--same thing happened in association with the 1883 Krakatau eruption.

Note that 12 seconds passes between the P and S wave arrivals (the S is the more violent). 12 seconds is enough time for many of these people to move to a safer location, or (preferably) drop, cover, and hold on. This is why we need earthquake early warning systems.

I'm on my way home from #AGU18 , and was thinking that many people may not know what goes on at a scientific conference. Hoping this thread will help explain what it's all about and how helpful conferences are to advancing good science. That's a poster session in the photo.

@Nicole_Cliffe Casual runs in the family: My mother: John and I are thinking of getting married and I need you to stand up for me at the wedding. Can you do Thursday? Me: Um, Thursday's really bad. Can you do Wednesday? Mom [yelling]: John? Can we get married Wednesday?

My husband and I have abandoned kids and dogs and escaped to a nearby Airbnb. I'm drinking wine and this is my view. I feel more alive than I have for, oh, about a year.

Since there's always debate on this topic, I'll climb onto my soap box. Slab pull IS convection. Cold, negatively buoyant things are convection. So yes, convection drives PT, but not because hot material rises. That part is passive.

The dog broke the fence yesterday. Later I heard power tools, and eventually wandered outside to this view: my 16 year old daughter taking it upon herself to fix the thing. Don't know what I did to be blessed with this independent and capable kid but damn, I'm grateful.

In the years to come, I hope we remember that in 2020 teachers, janitors, nurses, grocery clerks, and now election poll workers, risked their lives for our safety and our democracy.

"I really like the equation for plate movement: cVb = cVa + aVb...because it reminds me that even if you don't have the exact answer to something you can infer the answer from what you do know. I think that's a pretty good reminder to have every now and then".
