Yes, the comparison with Iran is provocative (and intended to be) but her argument is completely valid. The role of the CofE in UK government institutions is completely indefensible.

The reason for that is that they realise it’s socially unacceptable and they will be condemned by public opinion, not to mention the law. Here it is sanctioned, and that’s what’s objectionable.

I mean, you could argue it’s logical beyond the surface too, but only insofar as it applies equally to every single war or conflict in history while shedding no light whatsoever on a single one of them...
@JamesMelville
That is very true. However, the implication is that all opinions are equivalent, which they are not. The fact that we are all entitled to an opinion does not mean that all opinions are valid.

They do it because they can, and they do it with impunity.

@IanDunt
It might give me some satisfaction to see BJ and DC turn on each other if it weren’t for the fact that it’s the public that has borne the cost of it all.
@javicaches
@HeleneBismarck
What a read. I share much of the author’s disappointment in my adoptive country. I became a British citizen with a deep sense that it was fitting because the UK made me who I am. Now, as a dual nationality Brit, I cannot disown my adoptive country but it is breaking my heart.
A good time to re-read Jerusalem by

Because this book is being read all over the world.

You’re the best; I really enjoy your threads. This one combines sartorial advice with a delicate and very understated (as Milo would presumably appreciate) indictment of Milo’s xenophobia.

Not only is it not inappropriate but how dare a teacher shame a girl for the way she's dressed? It's really hard to undo that stuff afterwards... I would definitively have words with the school about this.

I’m so sorry. My sister-in-law died aged 51 leaving a 9-year old daughter. My husband and I moved from Canada (where we were) to Argentina (where our niece is) to look after her. I speak to her about her mother all the time and it breaks my heart but it also keeps her with us ❤️

Bill, kudos to you for engaging. None of the things you mention are gains though: our govt was more powerful when it was setting EU agenda; divergence makes us less competitive, potential new trade deals vs the best trade deal (EU membership).

I mean, that's cool, but really: was that the best experience you've had in two months in the city? Or are you just working very hard and not getting out much? I hope you do get out. There's something for everyone: architecture, art, films, cafe culture, friendly people, sports..
This thread has been doing the rounds for over a year now. It offers the best solutions I’ve seen for unwanted pregnancies. Should appeal to those averse to

so really a win here.
I’m a mother of six, and a Mormon. I have a good understanding of arguments surrounding abortion, religious and otherwise. I've been listening to men grandstand about women's reproductive rights, and I'm convinced men actually have zero interest in stopping abortion. Here's why…

I’m guessing the aim is to demonstrate to those who would argue that anything beyond the binary is a new thing, that in fact there have long been traditions of non-binary gender identities throughout history and cultures.

I became a British citizen in 2012. I did it because I wanted to formalise my feelings of belonging and gratitude to a country I had always experienced as broad minded, self deprecating, open. I am heartbroken by the last few years.

Cuánto me alegra.

Women get interrupted by men in meetings
If women speak 30/40% of the time in a meeting, men come out feeling women spoke “most of the time”

Thrown her into penury and, presumably, left her defenceless from unwanted attention. In the 19th century it’s unlikely they would have been talking about a woman’s right to go unmolested; more about how impoverished women were prone to being molested…

I get that you prefer intellectual modesty as a trait. It’s just that, particularly in work settings where power is at play, it almost prompts men to disagree/override what the female speaker is saying, which is harmful to the speaker.
