Why are the only options "pushing through" or "locking down"
Why can't we provide high quality well fitted masks for free?
Why can't we focus on clean safe indoor air?
Why can't we provide free rapid antigent tests?
Why can't use public health measures to reduce spread?
When I was 4 years old my father who was a park ranger, had to shoot a bear for harassing campers. I was both terrified for my father and horrified that the bear had to die.
This is not kindness. Training bears to see humans as a food source is a death sentence.
DO NOT DO THIS
Mask mandates will soon be gone. So let's talk about mask etiquette.
We all have different views of risk and need to respect that. Many people will still be wearing masks - they remain recommended and are effective.
Shaming or pressuring these folks to take them off is wrong.
I watched patients die of AIDS in hospital wards in the 1990s. Now I treat benign conditions in people with HIV who are living their lives fully.
IMHO this is the absolutely the most incredible public health achievement of my lifetime
My beautiful people of Australia
We are have now surpassed the US in terms of % of the population vaccinated with at least 1 dose. And we haven't lost steam.
We are on our way to be among the most vaccinated places on earth. And to a much better year in 2022!!
I am totally stanning on Dr Dan Suan right now
@DanSuan2
thanks for making this fantastic video. Well worth watching and hopefully will make a difference in how COVID spreads over Christmas
Remember masks are effective against any variant - they are protections not restrictions and need to be part of living with COVID if we want to live well with COVID
51 Italian doctors dead. This is reality. And anyone who thinks their system is better or won’t be affected is an idiot. And I’m talking to you Australia and Canada.
The
#1
priority of every government and hospital system must be getting adequate personal protective equipment.
Just got schooled on my tone at a department meeting this am. Please people, stop telling women they sound angry & too aggressive. Sound familiar to anyone? Don’t tell me we should wait for the changes that everyone is committed to. I will believe it when I see it!

Today I wanted to give a shout out to one of the best people on this bird, Prof Esterman who is here everyday telling us what is happening with COVID in Australia and around the world.
We see you and appreciate your wisdom and perseverance
@profesterman
I am filling out my yearly activity report. They ask me to list the accomplishments I am most proud of this year. I really really want to list teaching my cat to High 5.
But I can’t
So I wanted to make sure someone was aware...
What are u proud of that u can’t list?
@MarylouiseMcla1
So very sorry to hear this Mary-Louise
Thank you for all the time you have spent over the past 2 years advocating and educating. You are truly the best of the best.
There is a lot of COVID out there right now folks so let's all be careful this weekend. 🤞🤞we are reaching the peak soon in NSW, Victoria, and ACT so if you can put something off for 2-3 weeks hopefully case numbers will be down and it will be safer.
This is a tweet I just can’t get past
There are over 300 Australians dying every week of COVID wIth no signs the pace is slowing. When will we stop looking away?
The pandemic is expanding right now in 🇦🇺 and around the world. Please do what u can to reduce transmission. 😷😷
The numbers this morning are confronting and the lack of capacity for testing is making everyone very anxious.
We need to collectively get through the Omicron wave and then move forward differently
A 🧵
We are literally only weeks away from having a vaccination rate high enough to open without overwhelming the health care system.
How many unnecessary deaths are you OK with just so that we can have people over for a visit 2 weeks sooner?
Since Spotify has decided to stick with Joe Rogan I have decided to stick with Neil Young and cancel my subscription.
But I need suggestions - what music streaming platform I should switch to?
I really feel like crying right now and I don't think I am alone
Please send cute pictures of pets, kids, or anything else you think could cheer us up.
After watching the Victorian press conference today, I nearly cried.

is making hard decisions and doesn't take them lightly. I certainly wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now.
The questions he was asked today were simply cruel and accomplished nothing.
Thoughtful response to concerns about the mental health impacts of restrictions on our youth. Absolutely a concern, but the alternative to not controlling this quickly however will be much worse. The choice is between a bad short duration option and a worse longer duration option
Take every dose of pfizer in the state of NSW and bring it to Fairfield. Set up 24 hour pop up clinics and get everyone in that community vaccinated. That will do more to protect Sydney and get out of lockdown than targeting Fairfield for greater restrictions and policing
So happy to see my mother again after 2.5 challenging years.
We make a choice when we do / do not take simple measures to protect the most vulnerable amongst us. Policy makers included.

Sorry - my bad. Turns out there is a good reason to not subsidise Rapid Antigen Tests, afterall "you can't make everything free".
Seems "everything" means providing tools for people to identify that they have COVID to protect the community and control the pandemic. No biggie
Limiting access to Rapid Antigen Tests to the rich is not just unethical it is also penny wise, pound foolish. Increasing the spread of Omicron will cost us all.

@NSWHealth
Misleading.
74.00% of NSW has received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 54.67% are fully vaccinated.
88.6% of those 16+ have had at least 1 dose. You do not specify that it is of those 16+ anywhere in the tweet.
Reducing protections from COVID transmission at the workplace and schools sets us up for disruptive future waves
Like the frog in the pot of water set to boil, changes will be implemented when the impact is less obvious. Then in the next wave when we need them, they will be gone
The mandatory COVID-19 self-isolation period will be reduced from 7 to 5 days this Friday. The decision is being challenged by a number of health experts. 10 News First: Breakfast speaks to epidemiologist Professor Nancy Baxter |

WOW OK, I recommended one place - ONE - that I ordered some RAT from who hadn't raised prices when I ordered yesterday only to find out they had today.
I cannot do a thread-o of in-stock RATs; I can't in good conscience recommend ANYONE pay $20 per test.
Fuck greed.
Timely reminder that you have over a 4 fold increased risk of dying if you are admitted to hospital for a hip fracture with COVID
Changing definitions of COVID hospitalization is a marketing exercise that won't help a single patient or health care worker
You need a positive test to be eligible for potentially life-saving anti-viral medication.
I guess we’ve decided only people that can afford RAT tests deserve to have access.
Not something to be proud of.
Unless your plans for tonight were to stay at home watching the fireworks on TV, please spare a thought for our healthcare workers.
Going out on New Year's Eve is over-rated and overpriced at the best of times.
Tonight the price will be very very high indeed
And yes - cases ARE feeding into rapid rises in hospital admissions. I said we should expect increases after Xmas and that is what we are seeing.
Admissions are rising in *all* age groups.
Again, these admissions are from infections pre-xmas & just after Omicron dominant 6/18
Just checking that everyone knows the US could have decided to adopt the WHO approved test at any point since it was approved in January. Even if it meant someone had to admit the decision to make your own was a mistake.
You know that, right?
I have been waiting for data on the impact of repeated COVID-19 infections. I was hoping the results would be better but looks like being infected multiple times increases your risk of serious short and long-term outcomes.
Do what you can to reduce transmission folks
For all those who still believe herd immunity as a concept applies to SARS-CoV-2: It doesn't. We'll be infected again and again, and the data now tell us that the risk of serious long-term effects increases with each infection. Govts need to re-think & find a new & better plan 1/
The move to a ‘business-as-usual’ pandemic leaves us unnecessarily vulnerable and will ultimately disrupt business even more’

I do understand wrestling with mask mandates in various settings, & for different mask strategies in times of lower transmission vs times of higher threat. But in the midst of a pandemic as we still are, reducing requirement for their use is nothing to celebrate. 1/
I don't get everything right, but it was hard not to see that Omicron was going to be a problem. Here is my interview with Breakfast Television on Dec 16th, the day after restrictions were further relaxed in NSW.
We saw it coming.
1 in 10 people who have EVER been diagnosed with COVID in Australia were diagnosed in the past 24 hours. The next few weeks will be tough but we will get through this
Prevent infection when you can
Prepare for what will happen if you get infected
Take care of yourself if you do
Perhaps think of this like smoking. Some people smoke - it is an addictive carcinogenic substance we allow to be legally sold - but smokers that I know respect requests not to smoke in someone else's house. So wearing masks should be no different
The past few days have reminded me of the saying ‘if wishes were horses beggars would ride’
Making wishful thinking policy will lead to an exceptional number of people sick and hospitals overwhelmed for the foreseeable future
I calculate just 30-35% of Australians have symptomatic protection from Omicron based on UK study & Australian data. Boosters 3 months after 2nd dose & free rapid antigen tests are essential. Everybody can reduce spread with masks & avoiding indoor crowds.
CONFIRMED: Mark McGowan is set to announce the plan to fully reopen WA’s border to quarantine-free travel on February 5 will be delayed, The West Australian has confirmed.
Taking mask mandates off the table is just bananas. Queensland has over 1,000 people in hospital and an outbreak that is continuing to grow.
What’s it going to take? A complete collapse of the healthcare system??
Queensland has 11,687 cases and 10 deaths. The Reff is up from 1.21 to 1.27, a 12-day doubling time. Hospitalisations and ICU admissions are unchanged at 1,034 and 21.
Only about 1/3 of the Ukrainian population is fully vaccinated and less than 2% boosted. Vaccine hesitancy in the Ukraine has been fueled in part by - you guessed it - Russian propaganda campaigns against Western vaccines.
Wars kill. Disinformation kills. A lot to answer for
I can't understand why a private consulting company was brought in to give the government bad advice when there were experts in the Department of Health at their disposal + world class public health professionals and academics who likely would have given great advice for free
"PM was forced to intervene on vaccine after months of inaction" in 2020

Today was too much honestly. Here Brad discusses how pleased OR staff in NSW were to be given brief training in ICU care
"I know when I spoke to some of those staff they were really happy they had finally had an opportunity to find out what happens in other parts of the hospital"
A new BA.5 variant report from Portugal indicates higher rate of hospitalization (>3-fold) than BA.2, post-vaccination and booster, along with significantly increased risk of reinfection. VE vs hospitalization reduced from 93% (BA.2) to 77% (BA.5)
The expected result of removing virtually all protections when community transmission is high is an ongoing strain on our emergency departments. If this is how we live with COVID, the system needs more resources.
Silencing healthcare workers doesn't change the fundamentals.
@drvyom
It's beyond f*cked. The access block is two wards full of patients bunked in the ED all at once permanently. Ambulances can't even get in the door it is so clogged. Ambulance response times as a result are the worst they have ever been.
What about if you are not wearing a mask and someone asks you to wear one? There are lots of reasons why someone might want you to, and they may not want to go through their medical history just to get you to put on a mask. So the kind thing to do is just to put on the mask
@kazza264
@DamianTheAussie
No and this narrative is really unhelpful.
Even if everyone getting Omicron is inevitable (and if people get boosted it is most certainly not) if everyone gets Omicron at the same time it will be very bad.
We all need to do what we can to slow the spread
I think I can speak for us all when I say we are tired and the last thing any of us needs is a variant that seems to have been named after an Avengers character.
Cats! Pandemics! Understandable analogies! Outstanding 🧵
Monkey Pox is in our communities. Time to stop “othering” any part of our community for contracting an infectious disease. It’s ridiculous, harmful, and limits our ability to control the disease.
I learned some things about feline poxvirus as an EXAMPLE to talk about a similar virus. If a cat gets a catpox, it can spread to cat people.
If there’s an outbreak & only cat folks can be tested, it will seem like ONLY cats or cat people get it. Cats start getting dirty looks.
Let's also talk about what mask to wear if, like me, you will continue wearing masks in public indoor spaces
Any mask protects more than none, but since not everyone will be wearing them you need get a well fitted, high quality mask. So a P2 or N95 mask.

Officials: Out of an abundance of caution we will be testing all Chinese travellers
Public Health: What about the sub-variant XBB.1.5 that is already rapidly spreading globally?
Officials: XBB.1.5 was initially found in the USA so fits within our living with COVID strategy
Going to say it again. The XBB.1.5 variant (Kraken) that is absolutely rocketing in the USA and spreading globally, which has both major immune escape and high ACE2 binding, *evolved in New York*.
Not in China.
In. The. USA.
"Long-COVID will be the enduring, major public health complication that we failed to address in a timely and aggressive manner. It's not too late to invest in understanding and combating it"
I hate to break this to you but...
If you are meeting people (you don't live with) outside & are in close proximity (think less than 2 m) you need to be in a good quality mask
Outdoor transmission events with people in close proximity (1.5m) are on the rise.
No woman valedictorian

for 12 years when 50% of students are women. Let's do the math - there is a 0.02% chance this would happen randomly. It's time to stop challenging anyone who identifies gender bias - it's staring us in the face.
It's time to change the system
Sad news to share. My sweet boy Rocky passed away today.
Always up for fun with me, he was very shy - my friends thought he was a ghost as he would hide when they came by.
I was very glad during the pandemic that some of you were able to appreciate him in his all goofball glory

My question is why would the radiologist keep talking? If I knew there was a more qualified physician available, the only thing I would be saying is "Doctor, let me know if you need help".
The good news is we have likely reached the peak of the curve
The bad news is that a lot of people are still going to get COVID and get sick from COVID on the right side of the curve
It ain’t over til it’s over. Stay safe everyone and get your booster.
Now we have likely hit peak hospitalisation for our 1st true wave in NSW
- keep in mind that at ~40% or so of the people who will catch COVID in this wave have not yet done so.
- and (based on Delta) 1/2 the people who will die are still with us now
So be careful out there
A very sobering read
"there has been no central coordination to implement COVID-safe wards by NSW Health. No guidelines, no standardisation to share COVID patients equitably across all of Sydney’s hospitals, and apparently no ministerial oversight."

Fingers crossed I wake up and you are all still here. If not I'll miss you. Be good and reduce your risk when you can!
Remember masks work for any sub-variant.
With a ton of COVID still out there from the current wave + XBB.1.5 starting to circulate, masking up is the smart choice!
MASKS are back (=> they’re trending on social media and I’m getting hate mail). A short thread. See my pinned tweet for a longer thread with lots of peer-reviewed articles.🧵

Wasting tests on rich people who are worried when you can't even test everyone admitted to hospital or every health care worker is not just an indictment of the US healthcare system. Ultimately, it will end up killing the rich as well as the poor
Many aged care residents are > 6 months from their last vaccine dose. They still have protection but would be better off if they had a bivalent booster.
Why not protect those most at risk from COVID now instead of keeping the vaccine in the fridge?
Being told "you look tired" at the beginning of a zoom meeting by a random guy you have never met. He thought he was breaking the ice.
Pro tip - this is not a good way to break the ice
Seriously - let’s get real about actually managing the risk of COVID. We can’t pretend it’s 2019 - if we do we will just have more disease, disability, death, and disruption than we need to.
Can we please stop the own goals and try to get better at how we live with the virus?
"Science has defanged Covid, time to get on with our lives"
This, by usually reasonable Devi Sridhar, is a huge worry because it is almost entirely disconnected from the current reality that the pandemic is far from over and buys into a HUGE fallacy
🧵
I was thinking about this poem today so decided to repost
People with pre-existing medical conditions are people.
And if you need more reason than that to care about them, by people I mean your parents, your kids, your neighbours, your cousins, and sometimes even you
Apparently it is
encouraging news
really encouraging news
that most of the deaths
(over 75% of them)
are occurring in people like
my mother
my brother-in-law
my friend
my cousin
the people who were unwell
to begin with
though it is doubtful
they find that news
very encouraging.
@Doctor__Anita
This really concerns me. We need to start teaching people about mask etiquette. Even if not mandated, if someone requests you wear one the right thing to do is to put your mask on, no questions asked. Particularly if they are being paid by you!!
I can't imagine a scrub nurse from my previous hospital would have been "happy" about providing crisis coverage in the ICU.
Willing? Absolutely. Happy? Not so much.
BTW, this was in response to a question about possibly needing field hospitals in Sydney
Not reassuring.
Gotta say, I am totally fangirling on
