So I started at @OpenAI this past Monday... and the team I'm joining just published this result today! This is a small step towards testing out these safety approaches (so, fortunately for me, there's still more work to be done!) I'm excited about the directions we will explore.

We've fine-tuned GPT-2 using human feedback for tasks such as summarizing articles, matching the preferences of human labelers (if not always our own). We're hoping this brings safety methods closer to machines learning values by talking with humans.

One big lesson I learned from AI interpretability work is that itโ€™s not so simple for any given claim about model behavior to actually hold out and prove itself as a productive causal theory. One must design experiments with care, and interpret the results rigorously.
