In case you missed it (cuz I'm hearing a bunch of folks did)! CASSIEL'S SERVANT, relating events from Joscelin's POV, is scheduled for release in Summer 2023. Details of original announcement way back when:
Soooo... I've been waiting for all the i's to be dotted and the t's to be crossed to get the go-ahead to announce this news, but I guess it's out there now! 🙂
Okay, so I was kinda waiting until all the "i"s were dotted and "t"s were crossed to reveal this, and I'll have more to say later, but in brief... yeah, almost 20 years after writing the original, I'm telling Joscelin's side of the story.
You may squee now.
WHAT!? There are going to be more KUSHIEL'S DART books!?!
Deep breaths.
Guys, I really don't think I'm going to be able to wait.
And to

Ok crazy fangirl moment done. For now...
This is my mom. She passed a day ago. Even as her body failed her, she remained thoughtful, funny, smart, and snarky. Lost both my parents this year. Remembrances shared have been a bittersweet reminder that just being a kind person makes the world a better place.
Thank you so VERY much to everyone for the excitement! What we're working toward is a series on Starz. And I think that would be totally awesome! but we haven't even entered the development stage so don't plan on setting your VCR just yet. 😊

Um... to whom do they matter, exactly, other than slack-ass centrist pundits desperately seeking examples of "both siderism?" Yes, of course it's obvious that Farrakhan is anti-Semitic, but he has no standing of signifigance in our national discourse.
if you're feeling discouraged about the future of our world, just remember that somewhere right now a little girl is reading a book about brave kids who battle tremendous evil, and she is beginning to make plans.
Dearest readers, I'm seeing a lot of loving prompts to please, please deliver another book because everyone needs some joyful escape right now... but know your favorite artists are freaked out, too, and may be struggling to find the focus to create. Be patient and kind!
Hey, guys! Apologies for the barrage of tweets, 'tis the nature of a book (re)birthday! This link is to a post I wrote on gender identity in Terre d'Ange, knowing what I know 20+ years later...
We have a rogue SCOTUS. Thomas alone is compromised beyond redemption. Our system of checks and balances is caput. It's well past time to acknowledge this and start figuring out what can be done about it.
The opening line of Kushiel's Dart is actually an homage to the opening line of The Persian Boy by Mary Renault, my first major influence. Fun fact: Another author once referred to me as a tawdry plagiarist, presumably based on that single sentence! 😮
Lest anyone should suppose that I am a cuckoo's child, got on the wrong side of the blanket by lusty peasent stock and sold into indenture in a short-fall end season, I may say I am House-birn and reared in the Night Court proper, for all the good it did me.
@JCareyAuthor
"Honestly, Kushiel’s Dart is a book I wrote because I wished it existed in the world... I was yearning for stories that combined all the soaring beauty of the fantastic with real-life adult emotion and sexuality." Read more:

Hey, my dears! Thanks to a New Year's promotion from
@torbooks
the ebook edition of KUSHIEL'S DART is available for a mere $2.99! US and Canada. Tell a friend, or grab a copy to back up that well-loved paperback you're holding together with duct tape.
Thanks to all for the kind thoughts and good wishes! Out of hospital, recuperating at home. Bleeding ulcer on esophagus. DO NOT RECOMMEND vomiting buckets of blood, it was straight out of a horror movie. Anyway, doing better day by day.
5 Moderna. My eyes got brighter, my teeth got whiter, and this awesome cat showed up on my doorstep!*
*Not actual proof of a causal relationship. Results may vary. Cat not guaranteed.
Hey, guys, if I've gone to radio silence it's because I was admitted to the hospital yesterday after vomiting blood. 😳 Well wishes welcome, won't be responding.
Grief is a weird thing; haven't expressed this on Twitter, but my father passed away a few weeks ago, rather unexpectedly. Grief is always lurking in the background, casting a shadow, but at unexpected times, it sucker punches you hard.
Good morning! The world is a dumpster fire, but I woke up with a little extra sunshine in my heart today, and I want to share it. I love you guys! How's everyone doing?
I hesitated before retweeting w/ comment, but to anyone wondering, I'm still coping with the aftermath of a year of profound personal loss here. I hope my writing makes it obvious that I condemn systemic racism and authoritarian abuse. Silence≠apathy, just a lot of quiet grief.
@JCareyAuthor
I haven’t seen any commentary from you on Facebook, Instagram, or here about what is happening in our country right. This silence from one of my favorite authors is incredibly frustrating.
As an author who's been at it since MySpace, I can confirm that the pressure to market one's book(s) on every social media platform everywhere can drive you insane.
It does not, however, make you racist.
Not gonna lie, I think this list is seriously remiss in not including Kushiel's Dart. I mean, it's an idiosyncratic list, but if you're talking about groundbreaking books in the genre, that book cut a big swath of turf.
@hahrensexual
@JCareyAuthor
I've gone from thinking barely anyone else read this (never having found anyone to talk with about it before), to finding several others who love it like I do in the last few days. And it's making me so happy 😍
Okay, brief follow-up on yesterday's unplanned announcement! No release date yet, I still have to WRITE the book! It's gonna be a while, guys. Also, if I'd known it was going to elicit THAT much excitement, I might have added a hashtag. :) Suggestions?
As someone who has loved the Kushiel’s Legacy series for the last twenty years, I’m delighted to share that Cassiel’s Servant is a masterpiece. I wept while reading it. This is not just a companion story to Kushiel’s Dart. It is, pun intended, the Perfect Companion (1/2).
A sad, sad loss indeed. This performance is a bittersweet reminder to me that for all the fuckedupedness of the world, humans are capable of creating sublime beauty.
Dude, J.R.R. Tolkien is part of my literary DNA. One can simultaneously admire, respect and critique an artist. That's how art evolves. But speaking of disrespecting an artist, maybe actually read my work before you form and publicly voice assumptions about it.
Yeah, no disrespect, but the Red Woman ain't got nuthin' on Melisande Shahrizai. No fanaticism, no mystical powers, just sheer unadulterated genius. ;)
I keep getting excited about all the talk about Melisande from
@JCareyAuthor
's Kushiel series in my feed, expect apparently it's all really about a somewhat similarly named character from

Ha! When Kushiel's Dart came out way back in 2001, I literally had an acquaintance ask me, "You're such a good writer, why don't you write a REAL book?"
Does anyone else feel like the fantasy genre of books tends to be looked down upon a little bit by the rest of the literature community? c/o Reddit Fantasy
Today a stranger stopped to help me on the highway after a tire blew, saying only, I am Muslim and my people are kind in the hope others will be too, Inshallah. I share this kind act with humble thanks! ❤
@DesideriaMesa
Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. Until I read that I had no idea writing, the act of putting words on paper, could be so beautiful. Changed my life.
@JCareyAuthor
CASSIEL'S SERVANT covers the same span of time as KUSHIEL'S DART, and I haven't committed to going further. Believe it or not, I'm not sure my heart could take another visit to Darsanga! 😬
@JCareyAuthor
Will this cover the events of the entire trilogy, or just Kushiel's Dart? I'm almost finished Kushiel's Avatar and there are definitely aspects of this book that I'd love to have Joscelin's POV on!
It's not more for ladies, it's for everyone who loves a big, vast, sweeping tale, that does, yes, contain romance and kink, but also cool worldbuilding, intrigue, betrayal, bad-ass fight scenes and epic battles! :)
I jumped into fantasy by reading
@JCareyAuthor
Kushiel series which is probably more for ladies. I don’t know just knew it would probably be kinky and kind of interesting. Came at it from more of a BDSM mind set. It was different and I liked it.
The Kushiel series is like the parable of the elephant in the dark. By the time you've explained, yes, there IS an edgy erotic element--which can also be profoundly transformative--you've still got 900 pps of plot to describe... and all the lovingly researched historical detail!
@Spinalcold
@JCareyAuthor
I don't think I've ever read anything like these series. A less obvious benefit I see in the is the way physical pleasures are addressed after & even during extreme trauma. It's a beautiful & potentially healing series.
The lush epic fantasy that inspired a generation with a single precept: “Love As Thou Wilt.”

Do not despair! Also... do not hold your breath, for these things take time; a whole lot of precious time, as George Harrison sang, not to mention a whole lot of spending money. But think good thoughts! We have a dynamic team trying to make this happen.
Ha! I totally deserve all the fun you're poking at me for using VCR in my last tweet. Sometimes you default to the terminology of your youth without thinking about it! 😀
James Patterson, whose popular books have made him a staple on the
@USATODAY
best selling books list for years, lamented white men struggling to find writing jobs in film, theater, TV and publishing industries as "just another form of racism."
Scientology is a weird beast of an abuser. To take it seriously as a belief system is absurd. L. Ron Hubbard was a crappy pulp science fiction writer with deep-seated mommy issues. But anyone who fails to take it seriously as a legal organization does so at their peril.
Reminder! If you haven't yet met non-binary (and slightly murdery) protagonist Khai and immersed yourself in a vast archipelago beneath the starless skies, today is your chance to pick up a Kindle copy for $2.99. Happy Pride!
Technically, I am bisexual trash. But thank you! I think so, too! My career has taken off, my bank account is full and I'm currently hanging at the pool with old friends.
Yep, KUSHIEL'S LEGACY is under option, too, I think the team working on it is pretty dynamic, however, these prospects are always in the zone of cross your fingers and think good thoughts, but don't hold your breath or uncover your eyes... no wait, that last one is Bird Box.
@JCareyAuthor
It didn't hit me until I read Kushiel's Chosen that I thought, "This would make an excellent movie series".
Nowadays I'm leaning towards an HBO series, but I still believe Kushiel's Legacy could make that transition.
Here are a few of the books I'd love to see adapted: The Kushiel Trilogy by
@JCareyAuthor
and really any book by
@guygavrielkay
but first and foremost ASfA
Krissy is very happy today because this ARC of
@JCareyAuthor
's upcoming novel has arrived in the mail. There will be much reading commencing soon. Also, if you're a fan of Carey's, the book is available for preorder now, ask your local bookstore to do it, they'll be happy to.
And THIS is one of the reasons I wish STARLESS had found a bigger readership! Princess Zariya on her crutches is fierce as hell, relentless polite, and carries lightning in the palm of her hand. Disability impossible in fantasy? Not even the slightest little bit, my darlings! ;)
Who's that you say? Looking at artists for a possible Sekrit Project! Who would YOU like to see bring your favorite D'Angelines to life? Links to examples/portfolios greatly appreciated!
Are you wondering, what the hell IS this alternate historical dark erotic religious revisionist courtesan-spy-heroine-featuring epic fantasy novel that my friends keep talking about!? Now is an excellent time to find out as the ebook is on sale for $2.99!
@JCareyAuthor
I'm rereading Imriel's trilogy and I can't express enough how thankful I am for him as a character. His inner turmoil and what he's gone through in unfortunately relatable but your grasp of what it means, how it feels is incredible for me. Have a bright day
An exciting night in our household! We had a bat in the living room. After we got the dog and cats secured elsewhere, it roosted on the ceiling, and I sang lullabies to it while Julie manufactured a net. Bat safely captured and released. Hope it liked the lullabies.
I've made chocolate truffles dusted with cocoa powder, cardamom and pink peppercorn. Tastebuds holding up to Covid onslaught so far. I'm glad AF to be fully vaxxed and boosted!
Hey there from the 1980s! Yeah, that's me, riding my pony in my finest acid-washed denim. Just posted another lil GenX tribute the other day over on TikTok, where I'm @ thelesis.
I ❤️ my readers! Well, that puts me on a trajectory for a renaissance in 2038. Until then, I remain in the shadows, an unseen avatar whose influence is dimly sensed by a new generation of readers...
@JCareyAuthor
You, dearest lady, are CRIMINALLY under-promoted in my eyes. If/when your Kushiel TV series becomes a reality brace yourself for what Kate Bush is experiencing right now
a) "Kushiel's Date" would be a very interesting reality TV show, b) for 19 years, my readers have been the best publicists EVAH! (Also just maybe, good storytelling is timeless)
I hear this a lot, and I understand, but hear me out... you don't HAVE to watch. And if, heaven forfend, an adaptation did go awry (which it could SO many ways), it doesn't compromise the original work--the version you keep in your heart will always be private and sacrosanct.💖
@JCareyAuthor
I'm afraid that if the Kushiel's book series is made into a TV series, that they would not do it justice! I really want it to be made into a TV series, but what if they ruin it? 😫
