Please, for the sake of preventing a surge in fractures, please grit the footpaths.
A hip fracture has a 25% mortality at 1 year.
Gritting the footpaths is a public health measure.
Our staff have been out gritting roads, targeting the main routes in and out of the city. More than 300km of roads were treated overnight

Josilaine was a home carer cycling between clients. Too often cycling is portrayed as a leisure pursuit for the middle classes, not the essential transport mode that it is. RIP, I hope that as a country we can finally get to grips with the danger on our roads - motor vehicles.
Woman killed in a collision involving truck driver was "in pursuit of her dreams abroad" -- she worked as a carer and was cycling to a patient at the time of the fatal collision:
Thread!
So I've had a look at the €1.8m allocated to Co. Kildare of the €55m announced by
@EamonRyan
for "cycleways, footpaths, bus shelters, bike parks". It's concerning, and relevant not just for Kildare people. 1/8
Full speed ahead - delighted €55m from July Stimulus already allocated to councils for specific projects; cycleways, footpaths, bus shelters, bike parks in Greater Dublin/Cork/Limerick/Galway/Waterford metro areas. Good for jobs communities and environment
@TFIupdates
@DttasIrl
It's all well and good
@IrishTimes
having editorials about climate change, but if you continue to accept ad revenue from heavily polluting industries it is just empty words.
The vitriol towards
@boucherhayes
is telling. The public have been deluded into thinking that tackling climate breakdown requires no personal sacrifice. That we can keep flying, keep driving and somebody will figure out how to do it sustainably.
Another way to think about delays at airports:
We are in a climate emergency, since a vote of the Dail in 2019. If you’re on an international flight you are in the 4% of the global population that will ever do that in their entire lives. Check your privilege.
Visibly poor air quality tonight in Croke Park. Particulate matter levels breaching 100ug/m3 this evening in Dublin Port (that's high!). A
#solidfuelban
needs to be rolled out in Dublin in 2021.
@IrishDocsEnv
Our treatment of the bogs in this country is the ecological equivalent of burning down the Amazon. And planting conifers on them only exacerbates the destruction.
There are a few "journalists" who would want to reflect tonight on how their rhetoric led to a riot on Grafton St. A sports journalist, a former GP and a business correspondent with the "paper of record" jump to mind.
This is shocking reporting by the IT. Someone has just been killed by a truck driver, yet they are being victim blamed before they have even been buried. Why is it not being asked what drivers can do to improve road safety? Because what they are currently doing is not working.
We are seeing a surge of older people presenting with deconditioning due to COVID cocooning in our service. Community physiotherapy is an essential service for these patients that should not be suspended indefinitely.
A patient handed me in this letter today
"Physiotherapy services have been suspended to protect the most vulnerable people in our community"
Those "vulnerable people" need physiotherapy too
It's time this was reversed ASAP
6 months of no community physiotherapy due to Covid!
This is pathetic leadership. We have 3 years to reverse our emissions. Our bogs are our Amazon Rainforest, yet we continue to burn them in our homes. It exposes us to toxic air pollution, degrades biodiversity and releases rather than captures carbon. Disgraceful.
There will come a time when it makes sense to restrict the sale and burning of turf, when real alternatives are available to rural dwellers. It’s certainly not now. Thanks to
@LeoVaradkar
for listening to those of us who represent rural Ireland.
The Taoiseach announced that climate change was the most important issue of the day at the UN. Yet today he won't countenance the loss of a few car parking spaces to reinstate the gardens of Leinster House.
@GretaThunberg
was right - "blah, blah, blah".
@IrishDocsEnv
Taoiseach pushes back on idea to turn Dáil carpark into a garden/plaza.
Asked if former TDs/Senators should be allowed to park their car there at a time we’re trying to cut emissions - he says it’s important to reflect the role of former parliamentarians.
We live in a world designed to make us inactive. Health is not driving to the gym or park for a walk, it is being able to transport yourself actively in your locality.
"Taking parking spaces for cyclepath 'ageist', say traders" is the headline in the print edition.
It's ageist to assume older people can only drive and can't cycle. It's ageist to keep the 5 lane motorway through Ballsbridge and limit pedestrian accessibility.
I’ve had calls from constituents who last night had their tyres slashed in Churchtown by a supposed climate action group.
It’s now with the local Gardaí.
This thuggery is unacceptable, I’m hopeful the investigation can put a stop to this carry on but be vigilant.
Thread: There has been a lot of talk about 3000 deaths per year from fuel poverty in Ireland. Fuel poverty is a serious concern but we need to have accuracy about the figures we use. I decided to have a look at where it came from. 1/6
Air pollution is not just about the 1300 deaths but about the life changing diseases that it causes like stroke, dementia and heart disease.
We need to stop burning turf, peat, smoky coal and wet wood now and put in a plan to end all solid fuel burning ASAP.
On his way to work every morning, consultant geriatrician Colm Byrne has a fair idea how busy his day will be at the Mater hospital in Dublin just by breathing the air
So let me get this right
@IrishTimes
- Cyclists are simultaneously middle class elites on bikes but also not well heeled enough to spend money in boutiques. And the people who could afford to take a court case against, of all things, a bike lane are true working class heroes.
In an attempt to perpetuate a cycling culture war, the
@IrishTimes
has published an opinion piece in which the writer only sees "middle-class elites" on bikes, and not the people delivering food by bike, or those who can make rent only because they cycle.
This is so wrong I don't know where to start. Firstly NCHDs are no where to be seen on this list. Secondly HSCPs are frontline. Thirdly there are a lot of other roles in the hospital essential, such as catering, stores etc. I could keep going. Take this down.
Looks to be about 193k doses taken by non-frontline/HSE ahead of 130k 70 plus who are waiting across Ireland for vaccines. Or, nearly 1 in 4 vaccines have been taken ahead of cohorts. That's criminal that such a culture exists in HSE and a Vaxx team who are clearly not in control
Another "hot take" from this guy. Our contact tracing system is inadequate to have any confidence in these numbers, especially the travel numbers. Also Prof Mallon has shown that the second wave was caused by imported new variants. They didn't swim across the sea themselves.
If your response to road deaths is only hi-vis and not speed limiters on vehicles, better active travel infra, addressing the number of SUVs on the road, lower speed limits and so on then you are just victim blaming. Hi-vis has a role, but not the oversized role it currently has
Ok, I'm late to this. But the idea that a 15 minute walk from one of the main transport hubs in the city or a 5 minute walk from the terminus of the busiest bus route in the city to the zoo is not adequate public transport blows my mind.
Hear hear! In today’s
@IrishTimes
. This is a completely unnecessary situation and (unlike many others) easily resolved. The largest enclosed park in Europe, housing
@DublinZoo
, effectively “banning” cars without alternative transport is ludicrous.
@opwireland

I'm no microbiologist but this seems the opposite of what should happen. Surely if you are antigen positive you should just take that as a positive test and then be able to register that on a portal. Then if you have symptoms and are antigen negative go for a PCR test.
Yesterday, on our fourth

cycle in Naas, we got abused by drivers as we cycled in a group of both adults and children, including my own who are only 3 months and 2 yrs old. I'm still shaken but we won't give up, safe cycling routes are what the town needs.
Literally did the drop off this morning to crèche with my bike and will stop off on the way home to go to the supermarket. Happy to show you how it's done if you like

Cargo bikes are a game changer for families to get around in their locality. Big shop in Dunnes this morning with the 2 boys. Didn't have to queue for the carpark! It would be great to see more supports available for non-PAYE workers but this is a step in the right direction.
30km/hr is a public safety measure - public consultations can't trump physics. It should be the standard urban speed limit if we are serious about reducing road deaths.
#Love30
Dublin City Council says no clear consensus for default 30k speed limit in public consultation with 41% in favour 46% against and 9% in favour with exceptions

I was delighted to get the opportunity to speak to the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action today on behalf of
@IrishDocsEnv
on the benefits of active travel and ebikes in addressing climate change. The opening statement starts at 30.45 in the link below.
Are the IFA going to go into every medical clinic and try to cancel our advice to reduce red meat and processed meat consumption for health reasons? Ridiculous that they forced
@EPAIreland
to retract this.
Disappointing to see
@EPAIreland
delete a perfectly reasonable tweet encouraging people to cut down red meat intake to lower their impact on the climate.
@TurloughDonnell
What's inappropriate is a consultant like yourself punching down on someone for speaking about something that is entirely within their expertise to do. I would advise taking down this tweet and doing some self reflection on your behaviour.
1. Transwomen are women. People in the responses saying they are men is offensive.
2. For a transwoman to play with cis women she must have transitioned.
3. No one seems concerned about the safety of transwomen. If they are to play with men, then it could be dangerous for them.
Another sad and regressive day for trans people as more of our rights are rolled back, after
@IrishRugby
announce transwomen will be banned from partcipating in rugby.
I’d ask the IRFU to immediately reconsider this decision. They have started that rugby should be open to all..
Our treatment of non-EU national doctors is a disgrace. We bring them over to fill non-training posts and with little prospect of ever getting on a training scheme in Ireland. Read this thread - this system must change.
I’m a doctor from Pakistan working in Ireland for 4 years. I’m among many other non-eu nationals who are working at frontline along with all the other dedicated Irish and EU doctors and healthcare workers.
I was happy to hear the news that
@RCPI_news
has increased 90 training
@IrishTimes
More click baiting by an Irish Times headline. As it says in the article, the reasons why trainees are concerned about the contract are around restrictions placed on advocacy and concerns about working conditions. It is not to do with it being public-only.
I spoke yesterday on

Not everyone can drive, but everyone can take public transport and most can walk or cycle. As a geriatrician it is essential that we have a high quality public transport system to enable older people to get around independently.
@BusConnects
needs to happen ASAP.
I sold my petrol car and bought an e-cargo bike and didn't get any grant to buy it as I had already bought a bike on the bike to work a couple of years prior. Yet if I had bought an e-car I would have gotten a €10,000 grant and could do that every year if I liked.
1,467 BMW's, 44 Jaguars, 438 Mercedes-Benz & 316 Landrovers.
All of these luxury electric cars were purchased with a €10,000 state grant & rebate. Almost 50% purchased within Dublin alone.
Is this really the best and most targeted EV Just Transition strategy we can envisage?
@Sineadmcgar
@LeoVaradkar
@HSELive
Absolutely agree, great thread. These issues have been highlighted for years. In addition to all the warnings you detail, 17 medical registrars put their heads above the parapet to raise these issues last year too and were dismissed by management.
Lots of people who attend hospitals or clinics are not acutely unwell and could cycle there. As health professionals we need to do more to encourage physical activity and improved bike parking is a small step on the way.
The replies! Some people have car-brain. I've cycled to:
-- The doctors for myself and with children.
-- To hospital with children to an appointment and to see someone sick.
Nobody is going to make you cycle but visiting the doctor's is very manageable by bike most of the time.
Why were Londoners told to reduce physical activity on Friday? Surely the solution to a high pollution event should be to ban the use of private motor vehicles and using stoves and fires instead. Tackle the source, not the consequences.
I meet plenty of older people who cycle over the last couple of months and ebikes are enabling more to do so. However they cannot access the Bike to Work scheme, this is something that needs to be rectified by expanding the scheme to social welfare recipients.
The climate crisis is a health crisis.
On the converse, the solutions to the climate crisis will also improve our health. There are few treatments that we have as a medical community that have this return on investment.
The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart govts do the math on investing in better mobility.
Let’s be clear — it wastes public money to NOT do it.

@modacitylife
Commuting by bike reduces your risk of cardiovascular mortality by 52% and all cause mortality by 41%. Promoting car use is not what a heart disease and stroke charity should be doing.
I'll die on this hill - hospitals should focus on active and public transport options for staff and patients. And charging for parking is required to get people out of their cars.
I'll die on this hill:
Hospitals should not charge patients or staff to park. For patients, it disproportionally affects those with the lowest economic status.
And for employees, you're charging them to essentially come to work; this most affects employees who make the least.
It's worrying that the focus of the Dept of Transport's climate action is to promote private car sales. What about subsidies for cargo bikes and ebikes? The subsidy given to each new ecar would pay for a new cargo bike. Why aren't our railways and buses being rapidly electrified?
🔵Transport accounts for 20% of Ireland’s emissions.
🔵Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland
@ZEVIreland
will help us make the switch to electric vehicles.
🔵We need to get 945,000 EVs on our roads as we look to reduce transport emissions by 51% by 2030.
#ClimateActionIRL
Your bike can be your mobility aid. This is why kissing gates, chicanes, lack of priority across junctions and excessive stopping are impediments to people cycling and part of the disabling environment we live in.
To anyone still doubting the efficacy of cycles as mobility aids, today my knee was so bad I couldn’t walk a few metres without severe pain. But I cycled 18 miles return on the ebike to visit a friend. I couldn’t have walked to the bus stop. Got close-passed x 3 by drivers😡
Galway Cycle Bus was awarded a Leading Light in Road Safety Award in 2019. Galway Cycle Bus was set up in 2018 by Alan Curran to find a safe way of dropping his children to school as part of his daily cycle route. (1/2)
@DublinCommuters
This is disingenuous from this Cllr but betrays a common false perception out there that older people are incapable of walking or cycling and must be driven or drive. It is another example of the infantilisation of older people where we disable not enable them.
3 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities last week, 2 of those children.
@RSAIreland
shameful response is to victim blame rather than look at their own role.
#DisbandTheRSA
To the replies saying it costs too much. Each hip fracture costs the state €11,700. Other types of fractures would have a similar cost. It would save the state money to grit the footpaths, leaving aside the human cost.
Instead of cutting excise duty why don't the government do some useful interventions such as cutting PT fares, expanding PT schedules, lowering VAT on bikes, expanding the bike to work scheme to include those on social welfare and state pensions?
Time needed to cut fuel prices: 30 hours
Time needed to cut public transport fares by 20%: 3 months
Time needed to cut youth and student fares to 50%: 9 months

Being able to drive is not a human right, it is under licence. This man should never be able to drive again, let alone continue to work as a professional driver.
This video shows the taxi driver veering into the cyclist twice, causing him to crash the second time. Driver was convicted today but his 18-month sentence was suspended
Dublin taxi driver convicted after deliberately veering at cyclist twice | Video
This act alone constitutes two war crimes committed by the armed forces of a state - targeting journalists and destroying a civilian residential building. Yet the discourse still reverts to "both sides".
I grew up in rural Kildare, I know what it's like. How isolating it is when you can't drive, especially in winter. How dangerous the roads are as they are filled with drivers who have moved out to their house in the country. Wanting different for rural Ireland isn't smugness.
As a Dubliner born and bred, who now lives in Co. Wexford, I truly am, well, scarleh, when I see urban, cycling, or walking-to-work smug professional Dubs telling those beyond the M50 how to live.
The comments under this are shocking. Parents would be asked to walk a small distance instead of parking directly outside schools to allow cleaner air for our children but that is too much apparently.
If city centre businesses are failing it is because we made them unattractive places to live, especially to raise children in. Instead of forcing everyone back in to the office we should be focusing on making city centres attractive to families - playgrounds, quiet streets etc.
Since Covid, th small town I live in Warrenpoint has 3new cafes, a donut shop, a gelato bar & a place that has a charcuterie bar that makes fresh sushi every day. The local bar has had a huge outdoor makeover. The place is quietly thriving - long overdue, I love supporting them

A Short History of Level of Private Car Ownership in Ireland
Year No. of Cars
1915 9,850
1985 709,546
1995 990,384
2005 1,662,157
2015 1,985,130
2019 2,174,799
2021 2,486,302
There will always need to be flights, just as there will always need to be cars. But the idea of cutting down on our excesses should not be controversial.
It is against the law to park on the footpath. End of. Why are some councillors debating this? If you can't store your car safely outside your house find somewhere else to put it.
When it comes to allocating funding for active travel it can't be for token projects where money gets spent but is of no real benefit, such as painting cycle lanes. County councils need to up their game when it comes to using the funding that will be coming their way. 7/8
A Draconian contract which serves the purpose of stifling dissent and innovation by consultants. In addition to what is laid out in the thread, public advocacy on behalf of patients will be prevented through this contract.
Is it time to limit car access to Naas Main Street? The town has two bypasses - do we still need to also allow cars to drive through the town? Should the speed limit continue to be 50km/hr?
This is a disappointing decision by Cork City Council. Option 3 means that this is not a continuous cycle lane outside a school.
@EamonRyan
should pull funding for this scheme as it does not meet minimum standards for an active travel scheme.
This is the important point when it comes to the helmet debate. If you really care about the safety of cyclists you should be advocating for segregated infrastructure. The debate about helmets is just a distraction from the societal change that needs to occur.
Fair play to these consultants in Beaumont for calling this out. If we are bringing doctors over here to staff our hospitals they should be afforded the opportunity to train in this country.
Air pollution is a major public health risk in Ireland.
The air pollution events in Ireland that caused stroke admissions are linked with turf and peat burning.
We cannot continue to expose the public to the toxic effects of peat, smoky coal and wet wood.
Ban peat sales now
Surely the question of requiring some years’ service in Ireland by health professionals in exchange for their very valuable training must come on the agenda at some stage.
And this is another disappointing decision by Galway City Council. I actually despair for our ability to make the radical changes required to tackle the climate crisis if a small bit of cycle lane can't get through.
Naas Main Street. Two bypasses at this stage. Still unfettered access to cars, trucks and tractors. Should be access only with no through traffic.
@NaasCycling
Cycling only gets €15k (1%) on its own, with most being joint walking and cycling projects (€385k, 21%). Nearly all the cycling spending is on painted lanes, not actual segregated cycle lanes. The only time a segregated lane is mentioned they only hope it will happen. 5/8

. You've been a credit to the university through this difficult time. Congrats to you all on match day and I look forward to working with you all in the years to come.
The reason this angers me is that instead of focusing on what works best, the RSA got the head of a car organisation who is actively campaigning against lower speed limits to open their conference. Their priorities are all wrong and they are a hindrance to road safety in Ireland.

The Netherlands’ quality cycling infrastructure means a third of trips by people aged 65 to 75 are on a bicycle; the highest rate among all adult categories.
For many, the bicycle acts as a “rolling walking stick”; a type of mobility device far easier on the joints than walking.
New govt guide for Health Professionals suggests we:
- Talk more about climate with patients
- Help patients reduce car use
- Encourage efficient energy use
- Promote diets higher in plants, lower in animals
- Address social inequalities
This is a really interesting study that backs up previous NO2 modelling performed. For it to be released on the same day as excise duty on petrol and diesel is reduced is striking. We need to ban cars from our towns and cities, we need to tax petrol and diesel heavily.
Interesting article considering transport engineering through the lens of public health. Just like we try to avoid exposing people to pathogens, so we should avoid exposing them to kinetic energy
NEW RESEARCH: We can’t expect much progress from individuals changing their behavior. Transportation systems should be altered to reduce the overall risk people face when using it.
“We dont ask everyone to filter their water. We build it into the system.”
