Packed house for the Boston premiere of SECRET MALL APARTMENT (the documentary about the artists who built and lived in a hidden apartment in Providence Place Mall.) Boston really has a great movie theater scene, despite the odds and where the industry has been going.
Oh you donโt โgetโ pizza strips? Should we have a party? Should we invite a bunch of people who just moved here from Boston and have the personality of drywall?
some news! today is my first day as a watchdog reporter at the
@projo
. i am so excited to start covering rhode island, the only state that mattersโข๏ธ. DM me your tips or email me at afarzan

If anyone knows the person who lives on the top floor of the Grace Church Apartments and grows massive sunflowers on their balconyโฆ. please just tell them Iโm a huge fan
If you are now wondering what would happen if a container ship from Quonset hit the Newport bridge, rest assured that I am too and am calling the relevant experts to find out
Huge news (at least for me personally) - thereโs now a floating oyster bar in Newport harbor that will tie up at your mooring & shuck them for you. VHF channel 88!
If the RI State Archives sold reproductions of the cool maps and stuff in their collection, I would personally spend so much money on prints that it would probably pay for the new building. Just a thought.
Growing up in Newport there were few things as mysterious as the โ6-10 connectorโโฆ they always talked about it on Cat Country 98.1 but I never knew what it wasโฆ it felt as distant and exotic as the Azores and I was really disappointed when I drove on it for the first time at 23
For the past couple of months Iโve been following people who go out looking for the old roads that were used hundreds of years ago and often have virtually disappeared โ but may still be found on paper. Hereโs the story:
The best thing about the Southern New England foraging FB group is how everytime someone posts about clamming, the Massachusetts people are like YoU NeEd A LiCeNsE FoR ThAt and the Rhode Islanders all jump in and are like hahahahhaha no we donโt, losers
โHe told me that on primary night, he even got calls from people in Liberia who'd heard Gabe Amo had won โ they were following Rhode Islandโs CD1 election during Liberiaโs early-morning hours.โ
@markpatinkin
with the column Iโve been dying to read:
Learning that the British childrenโs books I grew up with were illustrated by a guy in Rhode Island who takes inspiration from Second Beach has reaffirmed my belief that this is the center of the universe, thank you
@markpatinkin
Once again plagued by the memory of the time the cashier at a Portuguese market in New Bedford asked if I was Portuguese and I for some reason felt compelled to respond โNo, Iโm just a fanโ
Some of you don't fall asleep at night envisioning how you'd get around the state using small-to-midsize watercraft in the case of a gasoline shortage or apocalyptic levels of flooding.... and it shows!
Wish we could have a Rhode Island-specific Google that would understand that I would never voluntarily seek out information about Scituate, MA or Middletown, CT. And don't get me started on Warwick, NY!!!
Last 5 minutes of the Independent Man and people are still trickling in and lining up for photos. Kids are sliding down the marble steps & I just heard a mom yell โYou are at the State House!!โ at her football-wielding child. Itโs all very heartwarming.
my first
@projo
story is about a very large ship that turns out to be owned by a cult-like group and whose captain can't say for sure if slavery is good or not
Wrote about an underrated development from last month's primary: Cherie Cruz (
@ConcernedRIer
), a former teen mom who was pushed out of school in eighth grade & haunted by a felony drug charge for decades, is poised to be Pawtucket's new representative.
I love working at a newspaper because periodically strangers will decide to escalate random personal feuds by forwarding me the entire email chain, with zero context/explanation. I have never gotten a story out of it but always enjoy catching up on the drama!
For several years now I have maintained a secret guide to RI beaches in a Google Doc that is only shared with a few friends. But I am now giving away some of those secrets in the newspaperโฆ so you should probably subscribe
I will go to my grave reminding people from Massachusetts that Rhode Island is a true land of freedom, where each resident has the right to harvest up to one peck of clams per day
Making a list of some of the weirdest locations for historic cemeteries in RI. Anything I should add? (Yes I know the cemeteries were there before the other stuff, thatโs the point.)
Good morning everyone, itโs a beautiful day to read my story about how activists are scouring old maps and digging up archival evidence that may hold the key to opening up parts of Westerlyโs shoreline where the public has been shut out
Inspired by a discussion with
@Miguel_de_RI
, I am making a list of all the high-water mark plaques found around RI (from hurricanes, floods, etc.) Will post the ones that I have so far in the next week. Please tell me what I'm missing!
Remember the Pokรฉmon Go craze? Well hereโs something even better: Going on weird side quests to find the historic cemeteries hidden behind strip malls while youโre out running errands
I am always grateful when people are willing to explain things to me, which makes it possible for me to do my job. However, the other day a man felt the need to tell me what a quahog is, and that was deeply offensive!!!
Woonsocket's city council will vote tonight on a proposal to use the first installment of ARPA funds for a skating rink and ergonomic chairs for the city council chambers. Residents had said their top priority was housing.
Didnโt have room for this in the story, but two people who are being housed at the hotel mentioned (with zero prompting) that they were really impressed that someone running for governor was sleeping outside as a protest. Both had done winters in tents.
If you force yourself to stay outside until the sun sets, you wonโt be sad when that happens at 4pm. This is my most important New England winter survival tip.
