. Aspiring humor development researcher. 3.5 years into solo quarantine. All tweets & opinions are my own.
So I started to write an academic rebuttal to this
@chronicle
article entitled, but then I realized the only way to properly address it is through twitter memes and reaction gifs.
Because my academic mind has been twitterized.
5 years ago this week I went to the ER with what I suspected could be serotonin syndrome
Triage nurse dismissed me; got fast tracked
Intern dismissed me; resident un-fast tracked me
Attending came in and said “have you ever heard of something called serotonin syndrome?”
@Frediculous
They also think their dad is part of them. And every other regular caregiver.
They do not realize they are an entity separate from everything else for at least a few months.
I’ve corrected this misinformation on TikTok several times and then creators say “but it sounds nice”
@lizzard011
@quintabrunson
What’s probably happening, based on their age, is they know what they’re doing is pretend.
But bc they didn’t know Quinta (as Quinta) previously, they don’t have a frame of reference that ‘Ms. Teagues’ doesn’t exist all the time.
So Ms. Teagues was just pretending with them.
Now to some extent this is a success story! It’s how medical training is supposed to work!
Docs in training are looking for horses not zebras
But it’s frustrating to be told “the likelihood of that ever happening to you is basically zero” & explaining THIS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE
Female chronically ill friends of Twitter, has a doctor ever discounted your physical symptoms, delayed diagnoses, or dismissed diagnoses by instead chalking up your symptoms to “just anxiety or stress”?

One of my greats regrets is letting the privileged people at my undergrad make me think I didn’t belong there when I got the same degree with less than 1% of their resources.
Seeing kids like me in those environments now, it’s so clear how much more they’ve earned it
PSA re: “he lunged for my neck”
Strangulation is one of the best predictors for DV/IPV homicide.
Once someone even attempts to strangle you, do everything you can to get out.
@katiedimartin
This was me, a psych major, playing dorm poker with all the Wharton guys!
It’s never stopped. I’ve been in tournaments where guys have spent literally hours discussing how they couldn’t believe a play I made in a hand I won.
Anyway that is one* of at least 5 times I diagnosed myself before doctors came around to the same conclusion
*we actually don’t know if it was serotonin syndrome or a rare fast-acting virus but both we’re likely & treatments didn’t contradict each other so they just treated both
@doctora_nature
Ethnicities are capitalized. white is not at ethnicity.
Black and Indigenous have become ethnicities due to the systemic and historical erasure of Black and Indigenous groups.
That hasn’t really happened to white people in the West.
I once went to the ER bc I fell and immediately knew I broke my hand.
ER splinted me but missed a hairline fracture in one of the bones under my pinky that the hand specialist caught!
I was an athlete for half my life. I know what broken hand/finger feels.
And I’m a white woman with hospital experience who was, during that visit a PhD student in a local university!
And they knew even a potential break could disable me. So I got a referral.
That is what happens to people who are extremely privileged!!!
That’s why people self-dx.
@ashleysimpo
A 2019 study showed that on average single mothers do less household labor than married mothers because there’s one less person to take care of and fewer ‘good housewife’ expectations put upon them!
(Study linked in this article)
WAIT. I want to clarify this bc I just re-read it from my mentions.
Couldn’t a minor hand injury disable *anyone*? ESPECIALLY people who do manual labor?
Absolutely!!
But me being a PhD student - 16hr days at a computer is something ppl who went through med school understand.
It’s just a very specific form of privilege for that type of injury; that even docs who did not believe me, experientially understood the possible harm.
So again, I’m presenting a situation where I’m luckier than 99% of people who are being dismissed about their self-dx
Julia Louis Dreyfus won a slew of Emmys for saying some of the vilest lines ever written for television while Seinfeld made a movie about a bee a webseries about cars and coffee and a movie about poptarts
One of the most famous “mommy bloggers” who preached this mentality was attested last week after two of her children were found malnourished and bound with duct tape.
@chescaleigh
That’s basically how Rush pitched OceanGate - as quicker, easier, and more expensive than climbing Everest.
He took a cautionary tale and used it to push people’s adrenaline-seeking to 11.
@EveRosenfeld
For a lot of first gens, including myself, our objectively underwhelming stipend/hourly pay is the highest (or among the highest) in our families.
Which leads to a whole other host of logistical and emotional issues.
@MaxCrumm
@Ivuoma
Also relevant - the police thought the assassin was a hero, to the extent that they wore ‘free Dan White’ t shirts under their uniforms.
And Senator Diane Feinstein found his body - this isn’t distant history
@cd_hooks
This is abhorrent obviously, but there’s no reason to take even that claim seriously considering Texas doesn’t provide food to its hungry children
@BenjaminCrew1
It’s worse than that.
You can’t scale for inflation, bc wages have not scaled for inflation.
2007 minimum wage: $5.15 - $5.85
2010 minimum wage: $7.25
2023 minimum wage: $7.25
He’d be hovering around $15/hr at best. IF they didn’t fire him for someone cheaper.
Thank you,

This is the rule. Not the exception.
It has happened to me in some of the best hospitals in the country, by various specialities.
@JoeBerkowitz
I think this video sums it up pretty well. The worst case scenario for them is they end up with MORE rights.
I understand the feelings are the same. But the reality is much different.
@Zayum_Thandi
Sure! Exactly. It’s a relatively young field.
My work is mostly focused on young children. So all babies are born without the ability to smile on command and most five years olds can successfully tell you a knock-knock joke
It’s basically breaking down how that process happens
@scarletkmeyer
I used to use Louis CK’s clips to teach humor development/child development and they’re still so good in terms of content but I wont risk triggering a student for it
HE’S the one that took Louis CK’s comedy from us. Not women.
@Tardi_B
@MichaelaOkla
Since she’s an influencer, it could be icky if she’s personally profiting off of this. But it seems like Grandma fully consents and is a full participant.
I compare that of videos of children - who cannot consent - that are much more normalized.

@bodega_gyro_ao
I couldn’t afford SAT II books so I took them out of the library and meticulously copied problems into notebooks. Self-taught.
And I found out later most of the people I went to school with had PERSONAL TUTORS.
Yet I felt bad for scoring 100 points or so less than them.

Hey I’m in a vulnerable space so I won’t be snarky either.
Thank you for this. My dad was terminally ill and COVID just stole the last few weeks of his life in a truly horrific and painful fashion (and took an ICU bed away from some else who needed help)
He wasn’t noise.
@ULTRAGLOSS
@mjmarrom
hozier also said “if i had the choice between hearing either noise / the excitement of a thousand, or the soothing of your voice / at first chance i’d take the bed warmed by the body”
so never accept “u up?”

The first sentence of this tweet is completely accurate, but the absence of emotion is very rarely clinical psychopathy.
‘Turning off’ or significantly muting emotion is one of the most common responses to complex trauma, especially during childhood.
@putitaliscious
@afroacademic
I once I had a HS teacher tell me I couldn’t know the definition of ‘risqué’ at my age and implied I must be ‘cheating somehow’ when I used it. spontaneously. in verbal conversation.
I can’t even imagine how she must have treated students of color.
@Zayum_Thandi
One thing I’m not focused on now but would really like to study is how culture affects humor in kids and how that affects other development stuff.
And how humor skills can build resilience.
Ex: I grew up in working class Philly and they start teasing you the moment your born
@bfhermann
I’m providing you with a data set.
This is the rule. As in, this has happened to almost every female chronically ill patient I have ever spoken to at least once. And I’ve spoken to hundreds in person and virtually as a both a peer and social worker.
@ANMalikSmith
Pre-pandemic I used to go to my Sunday morning job and then hit a bar on the way home to get a couple hours of academic work in
One time a guy offered to buy me a drink and said “I won’t even bother you. You’re just so focused, you deserve it!”
10/10 interaction 11/10 guy
I’m muting this bc it’s just getting too much for me to handle emotionally atm as I prepare for the week.
I have a doctors appt I have to walk to tomorrow through a likely storm
But I will pace myself to bear witness to every single comment and story when I am able! I promise.
@aliceschwarze
@katiedimartin
If you’re good at poker is extremely frustrating to play with newer players because they’re unpredictable. It’s a game where ‘beginner’s luck’ is real!
But it’s garbage you were treated like that. If someone doesn’t know the game, you teach them.
A lot of working with children and families is explaining “that is not a symptom. that is just your child’s ability to have thoughts and feelings independent of your own”
@morgan_sung
Oh wow this took me back. I got a 98% NEEDS BASED scholarship to undergrad and all the kids whose parents were shelling out 60k a year were constantly telling me how ‘lucky’ I was
@Imani_Barbarin
These prices are essentially made up. Money is a fiction. And medical costs are a fiction of a fiction
It’ll come down to how it is negotiated with insurance companies, including Medicaid and Medicare.
That being said, I think cynicism around how that’ll shake out is warranted.
@missmayn
This is imo one of the most ironically prescient passages of the novel
Vonnegut, who casually saw millenia into the future and who took nothing for granted, was naive enough to think glaciers would outlive his great grandchildren
Maybe war, too, is less inevitable than we think
@LeapingHare

It’s definitely part of the whole ‘crunchy mom’ hippie side of the alt-right pipeline.
The attachment trauma is the barest seed of actual science in there but even that’s unfounded. It makes sense it’s like astrology-level analysis.
@zoiedt
@Veronicaistrans
I was just telling the story of how I broke my hand years ago and how I ended up on the hook for the total cost.
Bc it was a fall on uneven sidewalk the insurance co reduced to pay, assuming I’d sue the business.
I didn’t.
The ppl I was telling were surprised and appalled.
@srslybarryb
@ymmayer
Adults generally have a very sentimental view of children, but kids are usually much more pragmatic than us.
They haven’t yet internalized all these (big r) Romantic views of love we have
You believed them bc you watched them mundanely take care of you every day.
@pardoguerra
@tressiemcphd
His tweets do seem to be written by a man who never had to coordinate 2-3 bus/subway routes in order to make it to work on time
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is asked if the West and the U.S. "can afford another war at this time."
She says, "I think the answer is: Absolutely."
@lilririah
There’s a poem/quote showing this mindset that I love. It’s only one line, but it gets to the heart of the feeling you’re describing and how it makes kids terrified of physically/emotionally taking up space and guilty for emotionally maturing.
Elder millennial PSA!
Most of us got stuck in a developmental no-man’s land when it came to the HPV vaccine, but they’ve raised the recommended age to 45!
It can help prevent against future new infections of cancer-causing strains of the virus!
I got my second shot today!
@ElyKreimendahl
I’ve talked about this on here before.
It’s a weird kind of hell to make friends with people while they’re in their performative ‘young and broke’ era and then have them grow out of it 5-10 years later!
@Es2Esq
Yeah
Comedy geniuses Amy Poehler & Seth Meyers, both new to SNL and eager to prove themselves, sat at a 30Rock highrise conference table, spent all that kinetic energy on ‘nothing good to offer’ and Human ChatGPT Jimmy Fallon was clever enough to call them on it
You solved it.
@tylerblack32
People writing about school closures causing learning loss, without a real discussion of the trauma of a global pandemic, are basically the same as people writing about the damage chemo causes without mentioning cancer.
