The dominance of Tolkienesque fantasy is and has always been a myth. I'm not even sure where it comes from, other than maybe middleschoolers having to read The Hobbit as the only example of 20th century fantasy. Well into the 90s, pulp-style and gonzo were dominant in pop media.
