Working in publishing made me stop writing for TEN YEARS because I saw how arbitrary it all was. I saw incredibly moving published novels languish and sell only a few hundred copies, perfect manuscripts get rejected because everyone couldn't see a vision for it, etc.

100% agree with this. It’s like that Picard quote where he basically says you can do everything right and still lose. If you’re trying to break into this industry, you have to be able to accept that as a baseline before even proceeding I think.

@courtshea @MsAlexLaPlante @DianaCejasMD Fluorescent lights are a huge trigger for me too. I had daily migraines when I lived in NYC because I had a 2 hour subway commute each day. Combo of the lighting and general commute stress. It was miserable. Left NYC and now I am back to 1 or 2 migraines a year.

@hankgreen I work in oncology/patient education and the way this tweet completely discounts how much effort goes into figuring out how to make less people die of cancer is infuriating. It's not just research efforts, money, and time, but things like policy and messaging, etc. Ugh.

Normally, you're placed under general anesthesia when this happens, but by the time he saw I was serious it was too late. I had severe PPA and deal with PTSD from it even now, 4 years later.

@annehelen I'm honestly surprised at all the judgment in this thread!! I grew up without parents together and I kind of romanticized the idea of a family unit. It was important to me to add on my husband's name to mine (though I kept my last name and now have a double barrel, no hyphen).

Sometimes, I don't think I have a lot to add to the SFF space, but my MC is the character I always wanted to read about. Laurel finds love, she is complex & interesting, and she is a hero. That she is also fat is just one part of her character, but she is unapologetic about it.

@iSmashFizzle I was in a major 4 car accident when I lived in Queens and no police would stop to direct traffic, so a person who lived nearby did it. For HOURS. We waited for officials to show up for a long time, so I eventually left to go to the Bodega and buy him a Gatorade and a sandwich.
