It's amazing to see Andrew consolidate over the Gulf Stream and intensify as it came ashore. The eye was only 10-12 miles across at peak intensity as it crossed the southern part of Miami-Dade County. It was essentially a 20-mile wide EF-5 tornado with winds gusting over 200 mph.

Todd took over Neighborhood Weather at WPLG from me in 1990. He was kind and funny and the life of the newsroom. It was wonderful to see him still there with the same spirit when I came back last year. His passing is a tremendous loss for South Florida and all of us at Ch. 10.

The heaviest rain in #Alberto 's tail shifted just offshore of the South Florida metro area - though the heavy rain threat with possible tornadoes continues. The tail will likely shift back west, however, so the flood threat continues. Update at

TROPICAL UPDATE: The interplay between Hurricane #Florence 's intensity and track are epic - meaning there are too many forks in the road ahead to have any certainty about potential #EastCoast impact. Issues with #Helene -to-be are more traditional. More:

#LAURA UPDATE: It appears that Laura's slight jog to the east kept the worst possible storm surge from pushing north near Lake Charles. A few miles counts. But a tremendous amount of coast was affected outside of the media coverage we haven't seen. More at

ANDREW + 29 YEARS: Late afternoon on this date in 1992 Andrew was organizing. The NHC forecast pointed at Boca, but the Hurricane Watch went from near Cape Canaveral thru the Keys. The AVNO model was brand new and never used before. But it turned out to be close to right on 8/22.
