Heatwaves should not be covered with kids eating ice cream or romping around in fountains. Cover extreme heat as a threat not a vacation. We don't cover the approach of a hurricane as great potential kite flying weather
Good explanation of what you saw last night...for us this far South, we see a lot of the reddish pink because at our latitude, we see the upper altitude mostly. We in the South experienced something very unique and possibly once in a lifetime for those that were curious...
Actual conversation with my mom
My mom: "looks like that storm is going to move south..."
Me: "I told you that earlier today"
Her: "Yeah but they just said it on the News."
Me: "You know I am a Meteorologist, right?
If you are a 17-year old in Georgia frustrated that you couldn’t vote this year: If you will turn 18 by January 5, 2021, you're eligible to vote in the run-off election that will be held on that date. You have until December 7 to register to vote...
Stunning how many people NOT aware of what is going on in SE
#Texas
/Houston/Beaumont right now w/remnants of
#Imelda
. Approaching Harvey scale event, but probably doesn't have national attention because not a major hurricane. "Just a tropical depression". Was forecasted too
As a citizen, colleague and former AMS President, I just want to say to all
@NWS
employees...Keep your heads up. Many of us value/appreciate what you do to save lives and property...hearing morale is extremely low. Your mission transcends whims of the moment. Stay the course
asked in a radio interview why we need the National Weather Service when we have Weather Apps and TV Meteorologists.............My response, "That's like saying why do we need potato farmers when we have french fries............."
When speaking of climate change, resist the urge to use future tense exclusively. (e.g. rainfall intensities will increase). These things are happening now...
Pro Tip: Climate scientists really do know that climate changes naturally and that orbital changes and solar variability affect the climate. I promise.
History I will share with my 2 kids today. Some of you may eyeroll and say "stop seeing color (btw read my book for why that's flawed) but as a child, I didn't see scientists that resembled my complexion. These things matter to erode dreadful underrepresentation in STEM fields
I honestly don't care which billionaire gets to space first. Focused on the all of us regular folks dealing with climate change, voter suppression, racism, kids without adequate meals, and those things
I wonder how many of those people saying they don't get vaccine because don't trust the federal government cashed a social security check this week, used medicare, made plans based on a weather forecast, landed safely in a plane, or drove safely over a bridge...
I learned a few hours ago that I was elected to the National Academy of Sciences
@theNASciences
...Wow, what a year...I am humbled, honored, and speechless (the last one is rare)....Also congratulationsto others listed in the 2021 cohort...
Dear
@universityofga
fans, just in case you are not paying attention, Coach
@CoachJoniTaylor
, staff, and the Lady Bulldogs basketball team are now 18-2, nationally ranked, and just beat the
#11
team in the nation tonight..2nd in the SEC..Give them some love. Congrats
@UGA_WBB
pandemic, lockdowns, a man being hunted and killed for jogging, death by knee, recession, climate change, a man being threatened while bird watching, an active hurricane season expected, news crews being arrested for doing their job......We are living total chaos right now.
Foolishness getting around social media about wildfires "stopping" at Canadian border. Intent was to claim climate change was a hoax/data was being falsely presented. It really just revealed geographic illiteracy. My debunk

Day 1 of voting in Georgia. This is a satellite polling site near us that I have voted at many times....Check out this line....Will wait as long as it takes....Vote
Congratulations to my long time friend Dr. J. Marshall Shepherd
@DrShepherd2013
for being elected to the 2021 Class of the National Academy of Engineering. This is one if the highest honors in our profession. This is well deserved! .
Start or continue PRAYING...

catastrophic disaster unfolding. I am usually more nuanced. Not today. This is not hype. This is a professional meteorologist, director of
@UGAAtmosSci
and aformer Pres of
@ametsoc
sick to his stomach. 50 mb in 22 hr, rapid deepening
I get a lot of crackpot emails or calls with oddball theories about weather and climate. A colleague asked me how many men vs women. The answer is not even close, 100% men. Is this consistent with other colleagues' observations...?
(1) I tweeted that as an EV owner I have paid $0 for gas this month. I am an unapologetic advocate for EVs. Of course when I post about this, a typical response is what about those that can't afford them and stop being elitist. Let's deal with that.
Based on certain tweets getting around...had to dig this out again. I wrote this last year but it will be in heavy rotation until people understand difference between weather and climate...sigh.....
Lunchtime walk after class....Popped in to the place where the National Champions play. Getting ready for the big celebration Saturday
@universityofga
#godawgs
I honestly have sick feeling in my stomach as I watch and contemplate what to expect tomorrow as
#HurricaneMichael
intensifies. May be dealing with a strong Cat 3 perhaps Cat 4.....This is not drama or hype, this is simply a meteorologist w/25 years of experience concerned
Remember, the change from 2020 to 2021 is an artificial date change, you have the power to change racism, your pandemic response, well-being, misinformation and so forth. Let's not wallow in what 2020 was but rather embrace what we will make 2021
Unsurvivable storm surge with large, destructive waves will cause catastrophic damage from Sea Rim State Park, TX, to Intracoastal City, LA. Surge could penetrate up to 30 miles inland.
If you need to evacuate, do so NOW. Surge will begin today, well ahead of the strongest winds
Ugh, these things need to be removed for societal norms. It is an environmental nightmare. I do understand that they have memorial sentiment sometimes, but there are other alternatives
⚡⚡ Have you heard of Hector? Hector is a thunderstorm which forms on the Tiwi Islands north of
#Darwin
. It forms so regularly it has been given its own name! This loop shows Hector yesterday. To learn more about it see this video
Temperatures could reach 117+ degrees F in those pink areas. Please resist "it's a dry heat" cliche. Yes, humidity adds to what high temperatures "feel like" in places like FL or GA, but we do not see numbers like this. 117 feels like 117 and is dangerous (dry or not)
Meteorologist Gannon
@medwick
developed this because % Chance of rain is soooooo misunderstood. That misunderstanding makes people say forecast wrong when often not. % chance is Confidence x Area. Not sure this gets Confidence part in the process but very interesting. Thoughts?
An outstanding climatologist friend Brian Brettschneider who is not toxic or controversial at all just posted on Facebook that his Twitter account was suspended and he has no idea why. baffling. Yet, very vitriolic, nasty, accounts unscathed. Hope he gets to bottom of this
Psst...Science explains these cool natural phenomena. Predicts eclipses too. Here's a thought.... let's listen when the science is explaining things like climate change and pandemics too...
Good explanation of what you saw last night...for us this far South, we see a lot of the reddish pink because at our latitude, we see the upper altitude mostly. We in the South experienced something very unique and possibly once in a lifetime for those that were curious...
Say it with me slowly. Climate.....Scientists.....That Study And....... Are Concerned About Anthropogenic Changes.......Know.........That............Climate........ Has Changed........Naturally......
Biden just appointed John Kerry to a new, 1st of its kind Cabinet level position focused on climate change. It also places climate at the table of the National Security Council.....Wow
Disgusting my TV meteorologist colleague
@JoanneFOX5
had to go here. The ignorance /vitriol of some people is stunning especially since I bet they do not thank her the majority of days when her forecast is spot on. A good FG kicker is still good, even if misses one in the Bowl
Imagine Houston getting hit with a Cat 3 hurricane 4 weeks after Hurricane Harvey. This scenario playing out in 1 of poorest nations in world that just lost 1000 people to Cyclone Idai. Now threatened by
#CycloneKenneth
. I am sounding alarm
@ForbesScience
I was really bothered by the lecturing/demeaning Dr. Jill Biden
@DrBiden
for use of term "Dr." My discussion of layers of disrespect, disregard of a woman's professional credentials, and perhaps even jealousy. My Sunday morning writing
@ForbesScience
For some that are saying "this
#HurricaneMichael
is catching us by surprise" many weather experts were talking about this possibility since the middle of LAST week.....Remember, just because it wasn't in your Twitter, Instagram or Facebook Feed doesn't mean it didn't happen
Reminders: 1. It's Winter. We'll always have winter on a tilted planet orbiting the Sun. 2. It's February so winter storms do happen. 3. Because of 1 & 2, the groundhog has nothing to do with it :) 4. Climate change is still real. Weather=Mood, Climate=Personality
This is the forecast map for Election Day morning via GFS model.....Not a single major weather system or rain expected in the continental U.S. Mother Nature is doing its part to make voting as easy as possible. Vote
It is amusing how folks ask experts like me for my thoughts on where the hurricane is going or whether it is going to rain for their son's wedding, yet dismiss our expertise on climate change......Carry on.....
Beware of people in social media exhibiting The Dunning Kruger Effect, assuming they know more about a subject than they do... It is very dangerous. We see it a lot in weather-climate and it is rampant with Coronavirus
As I tweeted with Harvey last year....It is IMPORTANT to understand the potential 1-2 punch from
#HurricaneFlorence
. The full brunt of major hurricane (Cat 4 or so) THEN perhaps 30 to 40 inches of rainfall if the storm stalls. I found that people struggle with the part 2
Approaching 2 weeks of protests...That is a clear indication that something's different and I love the diversity of those expressing the need for change. This is not just about 1 thing in Minnesota. It's been a slow build of frustration
