East coast watchers should be clearing their diary for Friday/Saturday, with high pressure building over Scandinavia and an easterly airflow coming off the bottom of it, alongside a low pressure bringing rain with it as it passes through the country on Friday
We don’t like to talk about the end of the autumn, so we’ll just ignore that and look to some North Sea sea-watching weather coming on Friday/Saturday, Little Auks incoming! Comes from a way up alongside Greenland so could bring some Ivory/Ross’s Gulls and maybe a winger influx
An epic fall
@PortlandBirdObs
yesterday Presumably birds crossing the English Channel were drifted towards Portland by easterly/north-easterly wind and avoiding this band of rain sitting to their east in the early AM?
🚨Easterlies incoming! 🚨 this week should see some extended periods of easterly winds, up and down the east coast of the UK, tomorrow a nice south-easterly should kick things off
Expecting the first big downwind migration & arrival of Redwing out of Norway into UK & Low Countries through Saturday overnight into Sunday. Low pressure over Norway moves east & high pressure moves across North Sea into Norway,with Easterly winds feeding into UK

Good south-easterlies coming from a fair way off the continent for the next few days, combined with rain could see the east coast/Northern Isles kick into life over the bank holiday weekend?! Cretzschmar’s Bunting and Rock Thrush in The Netherlands a sign of things to come?
A very westerly dominated forecast for the next week or so, as this low arrives Tues-Wed hopefully bringing some birds from 🇺🇸 it also drags a nice south-westerly that should see some good sea-watching from Cornwall etc
After weeks of high pressure and north-easterly wind flow, are we finally in for one last hurrah of the spring? High pressure over the continent and south-easterly winds all along the east coast, I know where I’ll be heading this weekend! 🤞🤞🤞
We’ve been feeling fairly uninspired by the weather forecast, but still some good birds turning up inc. influxes of Glossy Ibis and Great Reed Warbler, hope for any keen birder to find either in the coming weeks (and still Night Heron!) This high pressure system looks interesting
If you could pick one day to go sea-watching in the North Sea would you rather do Friday (peak of the winds getting the birds and they are pushed into the North Sea) or Saturday (As birds reorientate and head back north)?
@whitburnbirds
@CraigCThomas1
@johnnymacbirder
The easterly airflow breaks overnight on Thurs-Fri when a low pressure system moves in with plenty of rain, which could make for an interesting days birding on Friday! Any predictions?
We’re back after our summer break and it’s looking like the passerine autumn should kick start in the coming days, starting with the south coast for Aquatic Warblers, Friday is looking the best and Thursday has some potential
An uninspiring start to the week with northerlies across much of the UK, looking better from Wed/Thurs onwards with high pressure drifting across towards the continent and a south -easterly airflow building, looks quite changeable at the moment, one to watch
@britbirdweather
Rapid transit of the remnants of hurricane Lee facilitated by a good westerly airflow across the North Atlantic. Rapid transit (36/48hrs) associated fronts arriving Tues. something could even get in 24hrs before looking at charts. 🇺🇸
The westerly airflow obviously managed to move a few of the Cliff Swallow influx that had been noted in Newfoundland, more to come in the coming days/weeks? Wonder how many have actually arrived onto Iceland!
One of two Booted Warblers on the east coast already today as well as a good scattering of Wryneck, Icterine/Barred Warblers and Red-backed Shrikes, easterlies producing the goods!
Does Scilly and Cornwall get direct hits from the continent in weather like this? Will be interesting to see what they get in the next couple of days with a good easterly airflow to the south-west of the country
A scattering if Arctic Terns across the Midlands off the back of the south-easterlies and localised showers, looking fine and dry for a lot of the week, Fridays forecast worth keeping an eye on at the moment
Bit of a double whammy of weather approaching the UK in the next few days, at least two nice looking lows coming from 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 hitting midday tomorrow and late Wednesday with good warm front associated with them
As high pressure opens out on the continent and some rain moves across the south coast, we’re into prime time for this streaky Acro gem, so well worth a check of your local rushy patch to try and find one, some cracking pics and gripping content from
@EugeneBirds
below
After the rain stopped today I spent about an hour around the edge of the reedbed looking (and more importantly listening) for Aquatic Warblers and came across 3, two of which were ringed. The softer "tuc" call compared to the harsher "tek" of a Sedgie is quite distinctive !
Wow, spot the difference between todays forecast and the one the day before the Dorset Sibe Rubythroat and other eastern goodies along the south coast …
We’re not the best at understanding weather patterns that brings birds from the west but willing to learn! A good sounding prediction here from a warm front attached to that low pressure to bring some birds from the west, great time of year for American Waders as well 🇺🇸
Looking like potential for migrants getting dropped onto the south coast over the next couple of days? High pressure building and creating a south-eastern wind flow and rain both mornings, Wednesday below
Another similar day forecast tomorrow with cloud sitting across the classic Severn-Humber line for overland wader migration, should drop a few more Bar-tailed Godwits, Turnstones, Arctic Terns etc to inland water bodies. Map shows todays Barwits from
@BirdGuides
The brisk north easterly wind brought these 3 Barwits and a Whimbrel today. Part of a decent movement at many inland sites today. All flight shots digiscoped.
An epic day for inland Bar-tailed Godwits (purple dots on map) and Little Gulls (green dots on map) across large parts of England, thanks to north-easterly wind and good cloud cover. Tomorrow’s clear forecast doesn’t look as good, but still north easterly
Another similar day forecast tomorrow with cloud sitting across the classic Severn-Humber line for overland wader migration, should drop a few more Bar-tailed Godwits, Turnstones, Arctic Terns etc to inland water bodies. Map shows todays Barwits from
@BirdGuides
And then as we get towards Friday/Saturday a big high pressure opens out across Scandinavia feeding easterlies off the bottom of it, this should see lots of Goldcrests, Robins and Thrushes heading towards the UK!🤞where will you be going birding on the back of this forecast? 🫵
📉 Arctic air will arrive in parts of North America this week, creating a huge temperature gradient and fuelling a powerful jet stream
⚠️ The interaction with this jet stream allows an area of low pressure to explosively deepen mid-week and become

A flock of 21 Nutcrackers passed Puise spit this a.m. while I was ringing birds with students. Most likely irruption in next few weeks can be expected.
Next up, remnants of hurricane Nigel arriving this weekend. I feel it spent too long (way offshore) but did interact with a low pressure and seemed to send that north of UK. However, it sets up a strong continuous airflow for a short period Sunday, as this animation shows.
Already a decent scattering of Black Terns, inc 5 White-winged Blacks in the south-east, will the scattered showers tomorrow produce more? Lots of Ruff reported as well today, hopefully some good wader passage tomorrow
☔️ A damp start to Friday for many with rain and cloud moving north
⛈️ Sunny spells developing further south, but showers quickly bubbling up, often heavy and thundery
🌡️ Feeling warm in any sunshine, although cooler further north
Classic migrant fall conditions through tomorrow, with an occluded front & trough moving in from the east across the UK bringing low cloud & rain. With F3/4 Northeasterly winds, expect more inland waders and terns Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Little Gulls & Arctic Terns
#vismig
Also looking at how there’s been a blast of winds coming from southern Greenland/Iceland to push birds across before this low pressure then brings northerlies to push birds down into the North Sea, will be interesting to see how this one plays out 🌊 🧐
With a second Cliff Swallow on Scilly I’m pretty happy to assume the Kent bird was an energetic forerunner and not an Icelandic cast-away. What’s next?! This animation shows this wkds systems approaching but intriguingly something developing just north
Well pointed out by Oliver, looks like could be potential for tomorrow especially for East Anglia with near south-easterlies coming off that high pressure over Central Europe
@britbirdweather
Reckon tonight looks alright, decent airflow from Germany, some some slack winds, bits kicking off the Norwegian coast. Not rating it?
This front looks good for bringing American passerines to the W and SW of Ireland. Dropping birds on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Given its two weeks earlier than usual, it will might have some unusual species..maybe a first for Ireland.
@BMcCloskey_98
He called first 🤣
If you see any weather that makes you excited to get out birding this autumn, let us know! We’re all about sharing what our interpretation of the weather is and seeing how it plays out, for good or bad! We might not have the radar power of the US but we can make our best guesses!
Not the most ‘exciting’ species but with no British records of Zitting Cisticola since 2015 and the last twitchable one being 2010, one of these would draw a crowd this weekend! Another

A week of easterly winds dominating due to high pressure sitting over Scandinavia, this should be good for some wader and fern passage for inland patches, with the first Black Terns more than likely appearing at some point this week. Worth getting out especially if you get rain!
It’s mid-October, nearly anything is possible, mega Thrushes, eastern Chats and wing-barred Warblers! More easily predictable species turning up should be Olive-backed Pipits, Red-flanked Bluetails and the first Pallas’s Warblers of the autumn, what’s your predictions?
The last big Ruff day at Holkham was May 1st 1990 when 313 counted; today did n't match it, but with multiple flocks all over the show it was an exciting day to be out. A single Black Tern was great but on May 2nd 1990 over 1000 passed through, a count still to be beaten!
This could see a scattering of ‘drift’ migrants along the East Coast, we’re talking Pied Flycatchers, Whinchats, Redstarts etc and hopefully a few RbShrikes, Barred/Icterine Warblers, Rosefinch etc as well as the potential for Arctic/Greenish Warblers. What are your predictions?
Potential for some interesting looking weather to hopefully get the autumn proper started along the east coast, north-easterlies start overnight Sat-Sun but fairly good conditions probably won’t drop lots in 🤞
As well as a nice north-easterly airflow off the back of dropping temperatures in Scandinavia should see the last push of birds heading to 🇬🇧 from 🇳🇴 🇸🇪 🇫🇮 🇷🇺
The westerly airflow obviously managed to move a few of the Cliff Swallow influx that had been noted in Newfoundland, more to come in the coming days/weeks? Wonder how many have actually arrived onto Iceland!
I've seen 7 spring Wood Sands here over the years, all singles and most only stopping briefly. So it was great to see 4 on Black Hole Marsh late this afternoon, having been found earlier in the day by
@BicycleBirder
. This easterly wind is doing the trick! Temmincks next?
#pwc2023
Stuff going to be leaving the continent over night (calm, clear with nice east winds), then meeting the slow moving rain front over the North Sea by dawn.
Big drought in Spain could be the reason behind a mini-influx of Black-winged Stilts, Night and Purple Herons in the last couple of days, more to come?

in decades. Water level dropped to below 10% of the reservoir's capacity, & there is risk water will be contaminated by silt. The fish to be removed & remaining water emptied downstream to another reservoir.
(1/4) As well as looking forward with weather forecasts, we’ll look back at weather induced birding ‘events’ and try to explain a potential reason why certain ‘events’ occurred, we’d love to hear your thoughts on our theories and your own ideas about birds and weather!
In the end there was a scattering of Black Terns across the usual inland English sites and a small arrival
@PortlandBirdObs
and some decent increases of Warblers in general further north
At the moment it’s looking much better for the Northern Isles but likely that low pressure band with the rain will change before then so one to keep an eye on for those on the East Coast, any predictions? Still relatively early but we’ll go for a Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler!
As that band of rain moves across the country it could drop in waders and potentially Black Terns? Or will it have not been blowing south-easterly for long enough?
@britbirdweather
Potential Merseyside Leach's Petrel weather Friday evening / Saturday morning? There's a bit of NW in the Irish Sea for most of Friday??
Looking like potential for migrants getting dropped onto the south coast over the next couple of days? High pressure building and creating a south-eastern wind flow and rain both mornings, Wednesday below
Then likely more birds will get moving in clear high pressure over Scandinavia on Sunday night with a good south-easterly wind pushing them towards Shetland, combined with a low pressure bringing rain to drop them in
(3/4) With a north-westerly wind presumably pushing birds up the Bristol Channel, followed by a band of rain to keep them low/drop them in. Scattered showers across the Midlands resulted in some impressive flocks
Heroic efforts from
@_danielowen
today, who momentarily took over my

news shift so I could intercept a Notts record breaking flock of c.170 (!!!) Kittiwakes as they passed over the Trent by my house. Nice to have 6 vocal adults at Netherfield later on too. Patch tick!
@01000011S
Here at British Birding Weather we like to stick to more ‘easily’ predictable occurrences, trying to predict first for Britains might get a bit tedious!
A week of low pressure dominated weather this week, some strong south-westerly winds coming in on Tuesday into Wednesday, nothing really jumping to mind with what birds this might push onto our shores, any ideas?
With regards to the low pressure system through tomorrow into Wednesday, it's not looking as potent, as it will be embedded within a larger low sat directly on top of the country, though any N adjustments could bring a swathe of strong winds more inland.
A post-work trip to Winterton Dunes with
@DJLbirding
in hope of a Bluethroat. Thought we were being way too optimistic until this landed in a bush in front of us in the South Dunes about 45 mins ago! Also a female Black Redstart 😁
