From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free from colonial violence and oppression
Of Mice and Men should not be in curriculums, especially when disabled students are in the class. I don't care how unpopular my opinion is, no argument anyone could make will ever erase how nauseous and alone and hurt I felt reading it as a disabled child
@fayemikah
Can some people be assholes about freckles? Sure! When I was little, a kid once said I looked like my face was covered in spots of dirt. Is this in any way comparable to what black people have to deal with? No! I can't believe this person doesn't understand that.
Like I cannot describe to you the pain of listening to my classmates discuss whether or not killing Lenny was a good thing or how he was portrayed or what disabilities he might be a stand in for. It fucking sucked on a level I will never be able to put into words.
I didn't say a word that entire unit. My teacher spoke to me after school one time about how quiet I was and I just started crying a little bit. Thankfully she didn't give me a bad grade for not participating, but I don't think she understood.
@micky864
@imirregulargirl
Autistic people tend to have a different relationship with gender and sexuality. We're more likely to be queer in some form.
@Imani_Barbarin
I'm like, actually pissed off by this. Ever since my cancer experience, I have not gone to concerts. My immune system is still not to the point where I'd be comfortable at one, even if we weren't still dealing with a massively infectious plague.
This just in, folks. Saying Of Mice and Men should not be mandatory reading due to the message of "this disabled man's murder was inevitable because the world is too cruel for his pure soul" is a slippery slope to...authoritarianism. I'm fucking tired
Right, I'm not tolerating devil's advocacy about this fucking book in my mentions. I'm just gonna block y'all. The murder and dehumanization of disabled people is not a thought experiment to me, and I have no patience for privileged dickheads.
@Imani_Barbarin
My first thought whenever I see products people label as unnecessary is always "a disabled person would probably find that useful" and then I look it up and I'm right. Every time
I'm a cancer survivor. I had to BEG multiple doctors to take my pain seriously, for months, and when they finally did, I had advanced into needing a hysterectomy. I knew something was wrong before all the doctors I saw. Shut the fuck up and stop using me against disabled people
@AkanaPhenix
Oooh, agreed!!!! I hate separated found family (for silly reasons, not angst)!!! If they don't buy a house and live together and get up to wacky, domestic hijinks after their adventure then I do not want it
Anyway, I did not expect this thread of me venting about how othering and painful it was to read and discuss this book as a middle schooler would reach this many people. I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling the way I do, and I appreciate mostly everyone who commented. Muting now💜
@Sappho_Lovell
@MillieBelizaire
It's not a period piece, but even if it was, it would not be accurate. You're referring to pomade, which does use animal fat, but many oils and scents as well (like clove oil, which is a natural bug repellent). To call that bacon grease would be wrong.
So, instead of criticizing and insulting this man for being an evil fuck, you decided to be an ableist asshole and use bigotry that affects all disabled people. Which includes Palestinians, many of whom are now missing limbs due to this genocide. Useless, performative "activism."
@ongodquirklord
@AutSciPerson
Jesus, what a horrible teacher! I've been shamed in that way before (not about the r slur) and it sticks with you. It's awful
@XplodingTurtle7
Not once in this thread or replies have I advocated for it to be banned. Or even removed from classrooms entirely. I simply don't think it should be required reading in the curriculum.
@supeg93
@kaceytron
@frantruth
So what you're saying is they literally have specific, designated family friendly areas and events that do not encompass the entirety of the pride event? As in, they keep adult stuff away from families?
@DerpyKey
@exstatikk
@iv0_hr
Same with disabled people. Our sense of humor can get pretty dark, especially when out disabilities are life threatening, but us joking about our own conditions is a hell of a lot different then random assholes hiding eugenics behind "jokes." Minorities can tell the difference.
@TankCatapult
@ErinInTheMorn
I mean, I will say that as a swimmer, one second is a lot to us. My friends and I would regularly celebrate shaving fractions of a second off times. However, I doubt any of the people criticizing Lia know that or give a shit about swimming as a sport.
@scottynukeop
@chubbycommiegal
@herosnvrdie69
That, to me, is what actual strength looks like. Coming together to say "hey, you're exploiting one of us and we don't stand for that shit," is a far more admirable quality than what the person who was QRTed posted.
@fatfabfeminist
Also she's just correct? Many plants used in pagan religions or by non white cultures have a history of being stigmatized and thus considered bad to use. That's just like, a factual part of history on Earth?
@stanzipotenza
It's honestly really helpful, yeah! Especially since you play all the characters 😅 I'm not HoH but I do have an auditory processing disorder and the captions in general help a lot, but the colors changing definitely helps me follow the character switches just a little better
@AlptraumG
@fayemikah
Oh totally. Racism definitely gets turned into "individuals being assholes" when you're a kid. But that's something that you can absolutely unlearn when you've got access to the internet.
@notbaldanymore
A lot of them have their ages proudly displayed in their bio too💀 Imagine being in your mid 20s and stanning guys who look like they believe running their hair under the kitchen sink is a shower
@jessiegender
It's that kind of tongue in cheek nod to oppression, almost in a dark humor type way, that makes his character so real. Like, that's something my friends would do. It's really in line with queer culture and our references to our own oppression and I really appreciate that.
@Imani_Barbarin
Any time a conservatorship case hits the public I see this. They did it with Britney too! People really need to unpack why they only think these situations are abusive and violate human rights when they happen to people they see as abled. When in reality the whole system is bad
@FrahmHalie
@guts_nelson
@philaheather
@BrittGratreak
Oh my God, there was a teacher at my high school (and is, the past tense is because I graduated, not because he got fired) who's known for not following IEPs and 504s because "then it's not an honors class." It's so fucking disgusting.
@eliavazoheret
@lolacoaster
I can only imagine. I remember when a friend's boyfriend cheated on her when we were in high school, and our group chats were chaos
@PPCSean
@DrewAlderson
@mattxiv
@TuckerCarlson
Also, you have a wildly inaccurate idea of what sex trafficking is if you think someone getting pizza means they aren't being held against their will. Like holy fuck violent kidnappings make up the minority of sex trafficking cases.
@jlsmilges
Seriously. Adherence to and enforcement of the gender binary on people who don't want it is a social rule I don't and won't understand. And I feel like that's a more common autistic opinion than not.
@FriendlyCytato
I buried it in my closet after reading it. It made me sick to look at it because I just kept thinking about how much I related to Lenny and "if he didn't fit in this world, then do I not fit either?" Traumatic, definitely
@cococourtney_
@iamlexstylz
Seriously though! Why does that photo have an almost green tint to it???? Was the shoot done in the same universe as the first Twilight movie????
@BiblicallyA
@Anania00
How about you don't call them gross? Just say you're not attracted to it and leave it at that. Don't use demeaning language and expect us to be okay with it.
@SolitudinarianA
@HeidiSueRoth1
It is 100% harmful behavior to teach, and who knows how many kids in that class already struggle with disordered eating. This would trigger them so much, and make it so much harder to recover.
@chronicallybeee
Frankly I don't think whoever the fuck made that stupid tik tok will ever know a fraction of the fear and scrutiny that Dylan has faced. I guess by her logic that makes Dylan way more of a woman than her.🤷🏻♀️
So, these tweets are from before she retweeted A$ on international kindness day. So now I'm starting to think her support of them isn't out of ignorance but active maliciousness.
@soupiest_soup
@OhTheSunnySide
They're also just wrong. Blackface has been done all over the world. It's very much not US cetric because the US was not the only place involved in chattel slavery
@RyanMarino
I also hate the framing of using a long term med as well. Taking prescription medications for chemicals our brains literally don't produce enough of for long periods of time or even our whole lives isn't a bad thing. It's not an unhealthy dependency or anything like that.
@ZEQAL_BRB
@aiizenswife
Or they go through extreme violence despite their badass powers that they definitely could have used to fight back and somehow its tied into the male lead and their suffering
@ErinInTheMorn
@TankCatapult
Oh, absolutely! It's still very good, but the 500 is an endurance swim, not a speed swim, so 1 second means her opponents kept pace with her for most of the race.
@Imani_Barbarin
If they're so worried about exploitation, then they should put their effort into advocating for better workers rights and disabled peoples rights instead of making demeaning assumptions about a disabled woman's maturity and intelligence.
@wiccanssock
@allsop6724
@steph0sims
The funny part is he's only been able to have sims that are pansexual up until this point. Only now are straight sims a thing😂
@lore_poe
@ChuckTingle
@Furankami
Seriously. The wizard writer is playing into the idea that trans people are predators and we all must be protected from them so much, which is what gets trans people hurt. That rhetoric leads so easily to serious danger and people just don't give a fuck🤬
Oh my God! Who thought this was okay????? What editor and publisher read this nonsense and thought "yeah, this is fine. Not racist at all"????? Couldn't even do a smidgen of research into historical hair care methods. Noooo, she had to write this racist abomination.
@sundayxghost
@twinkologian
When will people learn that reclaiming a slur is not using it as a slur???? Like, that's not taking away its power that's just continuing to use it to hurt people
@theBrianaMills
Oh god, I relate to that. The amount of teachers I had to educate about autism exhausts me when I look back on it. I can't imagine doing that while reading Of Mice and Men
@Imani_Barbarin
Same😂 Never gonna have kids, but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna go full worried aunt on any kids I see alone a wait until I see their adult😂
