@katiedimartin My mom is an actress. I was 4 years old and totally unprepared that I would see my mom on stage saying sweet things to another kid. Puzzled and jealous, I called her out in the middle of the show. "It's not true, I am her daughter," were my words from the loggia seats😂

@Theholisticpsyc I really like your work, but I found this tweet very disappointing. I fully agree with supporting parents, especially providing psychological help, but many women love their kids & their jobs, and that should be acceptable, too, in a healthy society.

@Theholisticpsyc Many out there would say there is a glorification of "stay-at-home moms." Working moms are guilt-tripped by themselves &society for not being with their kids. How about we teach women to be self-sufficient and healthy (including mentally) & let them make their own choices?

Six years ago, I defended my PhD. At the party, my advisor @eriklindqvist1 gave the most amazing speech. He compared me to Ethan Hunt: 'She always ends up in the most impossible situations. You think it's over, but somehow she manages to get out.' It was both funny and touching.

I think this is precisely why many people dunk on Stata. If you seriously code in any other (real) programming language you can see how that 1000 line code is very likely buggy and unreliable. Please learn to code in another language.

This is excellent advice. I am currently working on papers I started a decade ago. If I hadn't found the questions interesting, I would have found the process suffocating. Teaching loads & mentors/coauthors can make or break careers. Negotiate the teaching load 👏.

My advice for JMCs is to pick jobs that maximise the prob. that 10 years on you've answered questions you find meaningful. Helps avoid academia's most soul destroying outcome-writing papers only for tenure. Low teaching & mentors/coauthors are more useful than dept rank or money

I teach Machine Learning for Natural Language Processing by slowly introducing the distinctive features of text data. Foundations are essential; we start building from Linear Regression. Easier to introduce new concept if building from what's already familiar. #ML #NLP #Python

This year, my teaching evals for two popular courses, were around 7.4-7.8/10 despite excellent oral feedback. (I know they aren't entirely representative.) I reached out to students for feedback to understand what happened. Here's a response that makes teaching truly worthwhile.

@YujungHwang3 @orianabandiera and @elianalaferrara :-). For my MA thesis, I worked on a project closely related to Oriana's work, finding her truly inspirational. In my Ph.D., I came across Eliana's work, and I was in awe. Grateful for these incredible women in academia.

@vboykis It's unreal how much I have to look up almost everything when using pandas.

@Aliceinalbania The last one should be Tungjatjeta (Tu-ngjat-jeta) which would be translated to something means may your life get longer. I assume it derives from the geg dialect. In the south we don't say ngjat, we say zgjatet.

Historical persistence. Despite having moved to Vienna, we keep maintaining some of our Hungarian heritage -- see surname, name. But let's not dwell on the past :-)🚀 Big changes coming! We are rolling out a MA in Economics, Data, and Policy next year 👇

🧵My body used to literally paralyze itself during periods of high stress. The first time was after the academic job market. I accepted a job & the legislation changed, making it illegal for my employer to operate in Hungary.

This is how it ended. Submitted replication package to openICPSR - buggiest platform I've used lately! 😅 Discovered to never upload unzipped folders. Took hours for a very small package, but super happy it's done! 😊 #ReplicationPackage #OpenICPSR #LessonsLearned #SoonInPrint 1/

@ignaciojduran I agree! We suspected it mattered, but now we have evidence. A low-cost, time-efficient intervention showed significant effects. Imagine where we could end up if we helped people choose, earlier on, career paths aligned with their interests rather than societal expectations.

Please don't do this. Job market candidates are already paying huge costs (mental costs included). Perhaps we could look more at ways to automate the first screening.

We really need to find a way to curb the flood of applications for each position. No way a search committee can do 887 (currently) applications justice. Maybe a limit on the number of positions each applicant can apply to on EJM so as to impose a cost on # of applications? 100?

Did you know you can live a better (research) life through reproducibility? And if you’d like to see four data editors walk into a bar (but only after presentations 😉), join us on October 7 @wu_vienna for our 'Data Editors in Vienna' event. #econtwitter

We had the wonderful Julien Labonne, as a guest speaker, talking about the creative process behind his work on Politician Family Networks and Electoral Outcomes. @jblabonne also talked about the importance of knowing well the institutional details, reading broadly

Albania is NOT the 'Maldives of Europe' or anything similar. It's a country rich in history, diverse landscapes, & warm hospitality. Traveling to Albania does not equate a luxury destination at a lower price, but rather the opposite. It's chaotic & unpredictable +maybe charming.

In a work call yesterday, someone said they’re going Albania, someone else said ‘apparently it’s the Maldives of Europe’. Bare people laughed. Anyways, did my Googles and was angry at the UK again.

On Wednesday, I will present at the @CEUpolsci my work on the role of novel communication technologies in facilitating the fall of autocratic regimes. We use the Hungarian setting, the mid-80s, and investigate short and long-run outcomes. Join if you can!
