This little man just cycled nearly 11km to Salthill and back.4yo. We completely underestimate the ability of children at times. This stretch of path was however the only place where he was truly safe. How many kids would cycle to school if we had the facilities?
@GalwayCycling
Picked up the new SUV today to join the cargobike bandwagon! Thanks to Cathal in Kearneys Bike Shop Terryland for the brilliant service. Gave us the loan of it for a day to try it out. No going back now. This is a game changer for us that will replace most of our short car trips
Really innovative approach to zebra crossings in a small town in Spain. The crossing lights up if someone is waiting to cross or crossing as a car approaches. Doesn't light up if there's no approaching car, or no pedestrian waiting. No street clutter or constant flashing beacons
With all the talk of Salthill I keep thinking of this image & how it was rejected as being too radical.
A cycleway along the Prom &a transformed public realm would be incredible for a village that has lost its way in recent years & is in dire need of urban renewal

So, in a bit of personal news....
I'm delighted to have been nominated by the

Galway West
@SocDems

@GalwayCityCo

This is ridiculous. Same every week along this road, when hundreds of kids are at soccer. I know there's no intent from the driver, & such parking is normalisd, but this is selfish, inconsiderate, & dangerous. We need to change our attitudes rapidly or ramp up enforcement.
Counted 110 bikes at Blackrock on a glorious evening in Galway. Every bike rack from Seapoint to Blackrock heaving with bikes. Salthill is already a cycling destination, let's just make it a safer one.

No fixed speed cameras.
No red light cameras.
No online portal for reporting dangerous driving.
No graduated speeding fines.
No speed restrictions on vehicles.
No adequate resources for An Gardai.
No urgency to stop the carnage on our roads.
All political choices.
Having a bit of fun reimagining a few Galway streets. Just shows what's possible if we let our imagination and creativity help design public spaces for people, not traffic. Check out the website below.
I say this as someone who owns one of these gargantuan machines, yes, ban them. Tax them out of existence. They have no place on our roads. Electrification has made them heavier and more dangerous. Motor tax needs to be recalculated based on weight, not emissions.
In Newstalk chatting about
@brian_caulfield

~20% more emissions ๐
More danger to kids, pedestrians etc๐
More wear and tear to our streets๐
Time to get rid of them!
There's been plans since 2016 to put a segregated cyclelane on both sides of the Western Distributor Road. There's ample space to do this, no impact on traffic flow or parking, & with a new design scheme from the NTA, it could be done in a weekend. Time to act

Brilliant news from this evenings council meeting. Raised & segregated cyclelanes for the WDR included in the 2024 city budget. Delighted! Huge thanks to the Active Travel Team for working with the community & to all the councillors in the area who have supported this project๐๐

70 bikes in

today, and one year group still to return. This without any safe routes to school. If we want to promote cycling to school, safe, secure and sheltered bike parking is a obvious quick win.
This is horrible. Only around the corner from where I live and walk regularly with my own children. So relieved though that the young child is okay.
This road needs a complete redesign to make it safer for all. Some of the speeds that motorists deem appropriate are frightening.
This is good news. We've seen some really progressive plans for active travel in Galway voted down in the chamber despite overwhelming public support.
18 month trials, gather data, consult with stakeholders, get feedback, make changes.
Under new guidelines, thereโll be no more public consultations before trialling medium-sized traffic changes, the council's transport chief says. โThe trial is the consultation,โ he said, explaining the new Department of Transport guidelines.
First council meeting all done! Really enjoyed the experience. Thank you to all the councillors & council staff who made me feel very welcome, & for their support, advice and guidance. Still awaiting my council email but please DM me in the interim.

I was asked to write an article about our experiences of owning a family cargo bike over the past year.
Spoiler alert: It's the best family investment we've made.
#CargoBikeLife
It's incredible how selfish some people can be to undermine attempts at making our communities safe. This sign was dug up and unceremoniously dumped beside a wall this morning. Dozens of young kids play in this estate daily, and speeding drivers compromise their safety.
I'll back up everything Niall said below. This is meant to be an Active Travel Scheme, but removing a cycle lane and narrowing pedestrian space does not reconcile with this aim. If the NTA actually signed off on this, as was claimed,serious questions need answering.
Had a difficult meeting with councillors and engineers on the Doughiska South Cycle Route this week. The scheme is "Doughiska Road South" and was voted on unanimously by councillors in 2022, and construction started several weeks ago. 1/5
The
@RSAIreland
's insistence that hi-vis vests will keep our children safe on roads needs to be challenged. My thoughts below in this week's edition of the City Tribune
Typical cold, rainy summers day in Galway yet we've 46 cycling today. 6% of our students. What % could we go to with a network of safe cycling lanes? 20%? 40%?
This is an appalling story from the
@galwayad
today. We need traffic calming measures, lower speed limits (30kmh), & enforcement throughout our communities to stop this happening. Please slow down & give space around vulnerable road users.
Would make a great addition to our national parks for the relatively small investment. We should be doing this constantly to help conserve what little of our natural world we have left
#Rewilding
As much as we enjoyed the parade, I was really alarmed at the lack of road closures as crowds gathered. Hundreds of restless & excited children gathered on dark footpaths as cars whizzed by. Road closed only 5mins before the parade arrived. Not good enough. We need a better plan

Really welcome news for Galway for a project that has been a long time (20 years!) coming. With URDF funding secured & overwhelming support from councillors, this is a priority project for the council. Entry & exit points hoever remain an issue (1/5)
Students are delighted with the new bike shelters from

Burning down a centre for asylum seekers is utterly shameful behaviour and must be condemned in the strongest terms. There is no justification for this action. This is not what Ireland is.

Really nice piece on the need to create walkable communities. Worth a read.
Researchers found that a โsignificant number of people are happier if they live in attractive, walkable places that enable social connections and trust in others.โ

The new seating was specifically put in to stop this behaviour. There is no excuse for this with loading bays only across the road. Making a mockery of the new active travel project

One of the first proposals I made after becoming Councillor was the provision of TeenSpaces in our communities. We build playgrounds for kids, but not safe,inclusive places for teenagers. Good to see them included in our upcoming GreenSpaces Strategy.

6 weeks with the cargo bike, 600km travelled. Though we're always on the bike we've done at least double the usual km. Headwinds, hills, cross-city trips sometimes requiring a car are a thing of the past. Worth a trip to Kearneys for a trial to see if it could work for you
