This new gap in a wall in Knocknacarra shortened my cycle home from the Cappagh Parkrun. Making active travel journeys shorter than car journeys is a key part of our transport solution. For many this gap makes a bus stop reachable.

The sheer scale of bike parking in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is breathtaking. 12,500 bikes in a building - including accessible spots. And nearby retail is booming - they don't need cars. 1/2
The problem with Kenny’s idea of putting cars in the bus lane is the same as his position on the ring road. The both assume that the priority is moving private cars - at the cost to all other modes.
Galway City is being choked by traffic on a daily basis and the local authority must be willing to trial a series of pilots and temporary measures until a permanent solution is put in place.
Read our press release on the matter.

Galway City Council reversed the motion to put a temporary bike lane on Salthill Prom. The process is so broken. We still do not even know what compromise would have good enough to get support to continue 1/3
Delighted to have just found out that the newly appointed Galway City Biodiversity officer started work earlier this week. Wishing her great success in the role.

Today I addressed Seanad Sub committee on Future of Local Government. I made the case that a three term 15 year limit for local councillors would improve diversity in politics and bring in more young people 1/2
Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) has recommended to the Minister that 26 zoning decisions by Galway City Council be reversed for not conforming to good planning. This vindicates the Greens position when they votes to oppose building on Recreational land and flood plains 1/5
ABP have approved the Galway City Ring Road. Ruining the view of Menlo Castle is the start of the damage this would do. Urban sprawl and a car dependent city. There may be a judicial review and they have to find the money, so this story will run for another while

John Gibbons hits the nail on the head here. Anyone who thinks the Greens failed in their negotiations this week should look back and realise that this 'Green failure' makes far more progress on
#climate
than we would have ever managed if the Greens were not in government.
1/6 So should
#Galway
test sea water quality all year round? I believe we should, but the Galway City Council is against the idea because our water quality decides if we keep our Blue Flag status at places like Blackrock.

Galway needs more 30kph limits, specially for the wet and windy days. Report on city centre 30kh limit is on agenda for city council tomorrow.

The 50% fare reduction on pubic transport did not originally apply to private bus companies, such as City Direct in
#galway
, but that changes this week on this sept 5th when private bus companies will apply 50% fare reduction for all young people under-24.
A far more important issue with this scheme is the level of illegal parking on the bike lane and on the footpath - which is happening before the construction is even finished. 5/5
So let me see if I have this right. The only party giving people the option of getting out of their cars is the party being blamed for traffic. Party's promising the ring road know they cannot deliver so they blame the Greens because they have nothing else to offer.
Very disappointed that 1.27Ha of land at the East end of Merlin woods is being rezoned for residential on the claim that it will help access to other residential land - in spite of city plannners objections. A 9-8 vote for residential zoning means we lose a slice of Merlin.
Eamon Ryan confirming that if Galway City Council vote for a temporary cycle lane in Salthill, that funding will be available.

I was able to get confirmation this week from the NTA that there will be no issue getting funding for a temporary cycle lane on Salthill Prom - putting one bit of public confusion to bed.

When I occasionally do a press release about global warming, I always ask the editors to not use pictures of people sunning themselves on the beach. Once it gets above 40 degrees it should basically be a public health warning. Sorry if it makes me sound like a kill-joy.
Delighted to have voted that 30kph in Galway city centre will be law on the 28th August. Other parts of the city will have to wait for a full city review when we will have a chance to improve more areas.
I would like to express my gratitude to Green Party members, friends and family who supported my campaign and my time as a councillor. I learned and grew a lot from being a councillor – I hope some of my supporters feel they also learnt and benefited from their involvement. 4/4
Galway City Council are planning to deploy public electric vehicle charging points during 2022. But they want to put them where there is demand. If you own or will soon own an EV let me know where you would like to see public charging points.
In Holland checking out amazing bike facilities. As an advocate for biking I thought that this trip would be wasted on someone like me who is already converted. But I have learned a lot
Many quoted the emergency services concerns but that is easily solved. They can use the bike lanes to get there faster. In the long run more traffic means the blue-lights are stuck more often. For this and most of the issues raised the bikes are the solution, not the problem 3/3
@IrishCycle

Parking was hardly mentioned during the whole debate - but it is clear to me that it is the main issue. Everyone hid behind the idea that the blue lights services had objections, which had a number of easy solutions, but those solutions were ignored.
I constantly hear the argument that the bike lanes we have are often empty. But it is a slow transition. There is a tipping point where bringing a car into town is no longer worth the hassle and people will take bike or bus. We have to keep rolling our the infrastructure.
After years of concrete measures to improve cycling—and discourage driving—cyclists now outnumber motorists on London’s streets.
Since 1999, cycling has spiked 386% and driving fallen 64%; with cyclists representing 40% of surface traffic—including pedestrians—during peak hours.
Delighted to see the city council have installed the yellow box I requested at the junction of St. Mary's rd. and Palmyra Ave. This will help the

Today's Galway City Council meeting a number of councillors explained how the Galway Ring Road would reduce Galway's carbon footprint - it was like listening to Dublin Airport explain how switching the trucks to HVO would move them towards net zero carbon.
A suite of great new sustainability initiatives for

were announced today, which will help us meet our target of being a net zero airport by 2050. These include:

⚡️All light vehicles becoming 100% electric

I had my house audited for BER. I was told "Well obviously just blocking up the chimney would give you a far better return than anything you do with solar panels or insulation". I get the tradition bit, but we have to start following the science.
