Representation is said to matter, but I didn't see myself in the world around me growing up.
Whom did I see? With whom was I supposed to identify? What about my children? And what about in children's books? What do children see? How to measure it?

As we enter job market season, it's good to think about all of the options out there. My advisors had us apply to a broad variety of jobs: it's hard to know for sure ex ante what would be the best path. Lots of great options out there.

I am not the first one and I surely won't be the last one to point out that traditional electoral maps are a misleading way to represent the outcome of an election. This is something you can't stress enough:
tldr, 2/3
Mainstream books show lighter skin, even conditional on race
Children shown w/ lighter skin than adults; less present
Black&Latinx ppl underrepresented rel. to pop share
Females more seen than heard
White males more present no matter the data source
4/n
Books necessarily, & by design, transmit the values of society and whose space it is. The inclusion and exclusion of different identities send messages which can contribute to how children view their own potential and that of others which can then shape subconscious defaults

People want to see themselves in what they consume
-- They are more likely to buy books that reflect their race, gender, sexual orientation
Representation of race & gender tracks social attitudes over time
Demand for representation is related to consumer beliefs

Mainstream books are more likely to show characters within a given race as lighter than their counterparts in Diversity books. In other words, even when Mainstream books include more Black or Latinx characters, readers are more likely to see them with lighter skin color

I spend time “on the ground” with the communities with which I work. Talking to kids, parents, teachers, and others always energizes and inspires me.
But how to systematically measure representation over a century of content? Traditional content analysis is costly and requires looking at books page-by-page
So we leveraged advances in AI to convert images to data (using computer vision) & text to data (using NLP).

I appreciate that disability and accessibility are centered and named in this
@OlaySkin
jar redesign. Often, tech for disabled folks is made without them in the room, or with euphemisms that perpetuate shame of disability. This is a small step forward—I hope to see more.
We say “a picture is worth a thousand words,” but images are underused in social science research despite the richness of info in them
To convert images to data, we first computationally detect faces of pictured characters & then classify their skin color, race, gender, age
