Racial gaps on (insert outcome here): have 3 parts- (1) structural racism, (2) individual factors, and (3) discrimination/implicit bias. Generally researchers are taught to investigate (2) using covariates to explain away whatever the gap is. This is flawed.

I taught quant to masters students for 3 years. I got different versions of this. Nobody expects their quant prof to be a 4’11” black woman and it causes cognitive dissonance in an already “difficult” subject.

Also, I hate the framing of these segregation studies. There is nothing inherently wrong with all black environments, and moving black kids so white kids can have better racial attitudes shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as a “positive” outcome.

I voted in NC and it flashes a tally of total votes for the location. It was in the 7k range in Carrboro. I then looked up turnout from 2016 and compared to now. 956k people who sat out 2016 have voted in NC so far (as of Wednesday) 😳.

That being said, early data re: race + COVID is distressing. Before you race to put out a working paper, make sure you’re not falling into the trap of throwing everything into a regression and “solving” the problem. The effects work through the covariates + independent of them.

I’ll also add that many of scholars who became “famous” doing work around welfare reform have articles that read like this in 2020 (maybe not this bad). It’s all rooted in anti-blackness.

The NYU scholar credited with "providing the main theoretical basis" for welfare reform has a new paper out today. I share this clip in case anyone still doubts that (1) racism is central to the modern U.S. welfare state and (2) U.S. poverty research has so much progress to make.
