If you are in a regulated industry, you are required to install something like Crowdstrike on all your machines. If you use Crowdstrike, your auditor checks a single line and moves on. If you use anything else, your auditor opens up an expensive new chapter of his book.

The xz attack was not because it was open source. The attack failed because it was open source. The way this attack works for non-open source is the attacker spends 2 years getting an agent hired by contract software development vendor, they sneak it in, nobody finds out.

I will be direct: Matt is incorrect. OpenTofu has not "misappropriated". Infoworld needs to issue a retraction. I looked at the code, the ways they are similar are entirely functional, and the ways they are different tell me it's a different implementation.

Well that's awkward. 😳 OpenTofu seems to have misappropriated @HashiCorp 's IP by using Hashi's removed block code, removing the BSL license notice and replacing it with MPL. Folks, that's not how open source (or forking) works.

@QuinnyPig AmEx charges the merchants quite a lot more, both percentage and flat. Years ago I had a barber stop taking AmEx when they realized they were actually losing money every time they took an AmEx payment. I don't know why any merchant takes AmEx at all.

Most "open source contribution metrics" are too much like counting LOC. Easy to measure, and will turn everything to trash if you make them a target and a measure. And if you publish them in a leaderboard, that *will* turn them into one.
