Just got arrested by the
@SAPoliceService
while sitting in the back of an uber. Arrested because apparently:
I was a foreigner.
I had a gun.
I had drugs on me.
I was drunk.
When all was proven wrong and I wanted to file a complaint, the cops ran away from the station
Threw me into the back of the van even. By the way, when I say that they ran away, they ran away from their own police station. Now we are sitting at the police station and these guys don't want to come back 😶Imagine! They don't want to come back to their own police station😕
Question I now sit with is: lay a complaint or accept the nonsense apology?
The police at the station said a complaint would make the two officers lives "difficult". And I get that.
But I also know that they are going to keep doing it.
So what must happen?
In a nutshell, CJ Mogoeng went at length to plead that
#BusisiweMkhwebane
shouldn't occur personal costs (but not that she was not wrong) and didn't act in bad faith, but his peers are like "Nah fam, she dodge as fuck" 🤣
They accused me of having a gun😠so I lifted my shirt to show I didn't have one. Did a whole spin for them.
Then they said they now think I have drugs on me.
That's when I realised these guys have lost the plot and they were on a power trip. Foreigner, gun, drugs? 😵💫
They said they wanted to search me. I asked why. At this point tensions are rising. I could've cooperated and showed my ID but that means I would be cooperating with cops doing the wrong thing. So I asked why they want to search me? What did I do? Thats when the BS hit new levels
Could I have cooperated and silently walked away and called another uber? 100%.
But if you can't ask a police officer why they want to search you without them then trying to intimidate you and creating BS reasons, then we have a problem.
And honestly don't need them to care about me. I need them to do the right thing.
This all started because they saw someone in an uber and assumed they were a foreigner.
THAT IS NOT A REASON TO QUESTION SOMEONE.
Its just wrong
And they have clearly done it before
More context: Uber stopped at a red light. Police drove past stopped in the middle of the intersection, reversed back to us and then asked me if I'm a foreigner. I said you can't ask someone that question as a police officer. It's incorrect. They told me to get out uber. So I did
Now three of us are standing on Sandton drive. They asked me for my passport. So I asked what we did and repeated that you can't just pull someone over because you suspect they aren't SAn. Worse yet, asking for a passport! Cause if I was a foreigner and didn't have it. Then what?
So I called them out about making up suspicions and told them that this is wrong. I want to leave. You cant do that as an officer. You cant profile and intimidate by accusing ppl of things they haven't done. For sitting in the back of an uber?!? Mad!
Whatever comes out of the coalition negotiations. One of the things I hope is high up on the agenda is the professionalisation and depoliticisation of the civil service. You can't have effective coalition governments without this happening. Second would be electoral reform.
Whatever coalition is announced, the finer details will still be worked out after the 1st National Assembly. I can't emphasise how important it is for the actual written and signed agreement to be made public to all of us. Otherwise, we will be chasing ghosts for the next 5yrs
Last night was really funny watching people put their Pure Maths and Maths Lit skills to the test while looking at the IEC website. The skill people really needed was Voter & Civic education. It's easy to cast doubt in a system that people already don't understand.
Only people I'm listening to tomorrow as the numbers roll in are the
@CSIR
. Their margin of error every election is just so clean. It's really chefs kiss stuff. Don't get distracted by DIY home kit prediction models😅
Once I explained to the WO and a detective what happened. They said those guys were incorrect and they tried to call them to come back and account for what happened. They didn't want me to lay a charge because "black people must stick together"
That's when they said they think I'm drunk and want to take me to the testing area to check if I'm sober. So now I am being detained because apparently I was drunk🙄
I get there and their colleague who tests people realises this situation is messy and wants nothing to do with it
I get that a police officer has a thankless. But they have a ton of power and they can't abuse it.
1.5hrs! That's how long it took for them to get back after numerous calls from the police at the station. The WO played mediator quite well tbh, but those guys didn't care
Get to the station handcuffed and all. They take me to parking area at the back of the station away from prying eyes. They start threatening me, pushing me against the van while they finally do the search. When they realised that they messed up. I said I want to lay a complaint
Not going to lie. Watching democracy work at the crack of dawn had me gripped✊🏾🇿🇦
Anyway, onto holding the state accountable regardless if there is unity or not🙌🏾
The the line of day they threw at me was "Do you think you are the president?"😂
So I said no, but now I want to hold you accountable and that's when I pulled out the phone.
They then threw me into the back of the van and took me to
@SAPoliceService
in Sandton🙄
Young people on RSA at some point have to get serious about life and what it truly means to build an economy. Decided not to watch SONA and read it instead in order to avoid the "dreamer" charm the President often utilizes. So here are my thoughts on
#SONA2019
Definitely want to lay a complaint at this point. They tried to leave the station. I said that's not right. You brought me all the way here. So take me inside and let's talk to the station commander. Got a WO instead but they just used him to distract me so they could leave.
Got to spend a couple days with
@MichelleL_Craig
and
@Newzroom405
at the ANC elective conference. And I must say, it was such a great time! Loved the conversations we had regardless of how early they were😂
Cant wait for the moment
@MYANC
remember that they have leverage in these negotiations. Being punched in the face doesnt mean that you are knocked out. Everyone wants to talk because they want power. All of them need you for the next 5yrs if they want their agenda on the table
At some point after the dust settles we need to have a conversation about the usage of bots to push messaging for political parties on social media platforms (currently, but not excl, looking at you ARA👀). This form of campaigning creates a breeding ground of misinformation.
Hot Take: If the ANC was serious about its renewal project. It would step back, be an opposition party. Use the time to truly clean up shop without the pressure of patronage distribution or politics of "positions". Go back to back to communities and put the work in for 2027.
Spent the morning doing my first interview for my first book "Breaking a Rainbow, Building a Nation". Big thanks to
@Eusebius
for giving me some airtime, looking forward to all the future engagements
I wonder if Ministers put their struggle credentials on their cv?
Related Work Experience- 🤷🏾♂️,
Education - possibly but most likely 🤷🏾♂️,
Professional memberships - ANC,
Struggle Credentials - can I exceed 3 pages?
Things I find particularly boring on X:
Watching ANC, DA and EFF propagandists/influencers/fan club leaders fighting with each other about how they feel about each other.
If ever there was a useless void to fall into, it would be that 🙄
I just want to say thank you to every one of our 1000+ observers across all nine provinces as well as the 80 different NGOs who helped us make sure that this election was free and fair. You spent hours of your time before, and during elections and we are so grateful🙌🏾. Onto 2026
A very big thank you to all of our observers who dedicated their time and effort to monitoring the voting and counting process on Wednesday.
Thank you for playing your part and being an active citizen!

We live in a country where a group of men, can openly march across our cities, killing people of foreign descent in the name of crime prevention... 😥That shits heavy on the soul

Today's speech was the equivalent of having your boss give that Monday morning pep talk about the company of fairing and where he imagines it growing in the future.... But then doesn't tell you what to do for the week.

@Tessa_Dooms
I was asked about this yesterday and it annoyed me. Markets are important but, shouldnt dictate a democratic outcome. This thing of constantly appeasing the Rand must be tempered a bit. Even when it was strong inequality was high🤷🏾♂️Markets are a data point, not the argument.
Title for my new research paper inspired by Renald Gouws:
The "Excerable" use of Whataboutism and Generative AI in the defence of Racism: A case study of the pseudo-mania of liberalism in post-Marikana South Africa
Yea that sounds about right to me
What is a young person suppose to do with a damn poem when the vast majority of young people are unemployed, poverty stricken, facing some form of gender based violence or stuck medieval form of income inequality. It's actually a bit insulting
#SONA2019
How is it possible that no one from the Top 7 and NEC knew what was happening in KZN🤷🏾♂️ And if they really didn't. The blame must be on the entire leadership of the organisation. How can you be led by a leadership group that didn't know a 1/5 of their voting base would shift
Im not angry with you
@CyrilRamaphosa
, just disappointed. We dont need you to tell us about the state of the nation. We already know it's shit. Don't tell us about your dreams.
Tell us the plan. Step by step. Action by action. Deadline by deadline. Who's accountable

Last day on
@Newzroom405
this morning from 9-12. After last night, a peak example of what happens when you undermine state institutions for 20 years starting all the way back with the spy tapes, for short term gain. This is what you get. Not sure what Im going to say
You talk about DataMustFall as if government hasn't had the power to issue high level spectrum licences immediately. Your fear of the

Not a fan of left right political imaginings of SA. Not sure they are appropriate. That said, wow, the left took a massive L the past month. It's frighteningly disorganised and fragmented and the outcome:
The left is dead.
Dont say we cant let Eskom fail, as if the ordinary citizen was ever responsible for that failure. Like some how we were all put into the Eskom project like is a high school group assignment
#SONA2019
Mr President, listen fam. You have already inspired us with Ramaphoria and the New Dawn or whatever ntontoni you want to call it. We get you my man. But Thuma us somewhere. You can't be telling us about bullet trains when the rail system of South Africa is in shambles
#SONA2019
Dont treat us like we are forgetful. Telling us that you are going to bailout Eskom whilst at the same time not giving a single update on your promise to restructure Eskom.
Don't tell us about the 4IR when gov depts can't even update their websites.
Acting like gov doesn't still use Z83 forms😒
Let's be serious Mr President. Giving a child tablet or teaching them to code is not embracing 4IR. It is misleading to insinuate that that is the case.
The whole essence the speech was "We think we have a plan to build an economy. It's comprehensive. But can't tell you all of it. But here are some of the highlights. Btw whilst I have your attention... listen to this pretty poem"

Do you know how bad the economy has to be to have 27.3% of people not working 😳? And this only accounts for people at least looking for a job😳 These are all-star calibre numbers in terms of dumpster economies🙄

Cyril is honestly the least of your problems and anyone who just blames him is not seeing the bigger picture. The house is burning but you are worried about the leak in your bathroom? Be serious. Reform, renew. Whatever it takes. Just dont think removing Cyril alone fixes things.
Gotta love a good and informative thread.
I'm also realising that there a probably a host of sections of the constitution that have never been brought to life because of the ANCs dominance.
What a time to be alive. Competitive multi-partt democracy at work.
Are there any truly "Left" parties in South Africa anymore? And not revolutionary left. Just left. You know what I mean. Just a good ol fashion left party?
And would you vote for them?
Heading to Cape Town for the
@HSRCza
book launch of "Transformative Leadership in African Contexts" and I am really excited. Wrote a chapter there based on some PhD research titled "Emergent Decolonial Development and youth focused leadership development programmes". Get a copy!
Finding the focus of the Kenya protests fascinating. Budgetary allocation, various forms of taxation and the influence of the IMF as the locus of your activities is just chefs kiss 🙌🏾add to that the modes of coordination using phones as walkie talkies and USSD apps to run comms🙌🏾
I had no idea who Simon Nkoli was until two years ago when I was asked to read a PhD proposal on Nkoli's life and influence. I was spellbound by it...and that was just the proposal for the project.
If you are going to call youth unemployment a national crisis, then call a state of emergency. I dont want to be alarmist but the reality is that my generation has become the sacrificial lamb of RSAs failed economic project and it feels like our parents dont care

I also think he was thoughtful about not setting precedent. But the majority response to the argument of precedent I thought was more convincing and nullified the argument about how much the cost is. If the
@PublicProtector
works in good faith, they should never have to worry
When South African white people take pictures of their friends and all they see are other white people and the one black friend (if even the one exists) Do they ever reflect on how they got to that point? Or is it just business as usual?
Asking for a friend?
We stay being held ransom by the private sector😒but they gave us R840m. Chump change really. But why dont you tell as what the 43 projects are, what 19 sectors are they in and what are the 150k jobs. Are the low/high skilled, high/low paying, temp/perm

I dont like to count people's pockets, but Im also not going to actively become a supporter of either

You know what’s crazy about this argument though? They have slapped a subscription over something that was previously generally free with no additional content to justify. All they have got going is guilting us so journalists dont go hungry. Bet media churn rate in RSA is wild
This weekend is going to be stacked with

talking about Breaking a Rainbow, Building a Nation. Going to be at EB Sandton on Satursday and with

I just finished reading the VBS affidavit. Long read.
What a movie😂From ANC to PIC to SACP to EFF to National Treasury to Stellenbosch to helicopters carrying R5m in bribe money to "fleeing the country" to being scammed by Hawks impersonators.
I can't believe what I just read😂
This response is essentially "because I have gay friends I can't possibly be homophobic/misogynistic"
@GhalebCachalia
it's actually annoying at how lazy this argument is. Hubris is a dangerous quality for most, but even worse for leaders. Apologise to
@Eusebius
and push on🙄
After many requests to Africasacountry - the site that published Eusebius Mackaiser’s attack on me - to run my right of reply (to no avail), I have published it on the Daily Maverick. Here it is.
Imagine telling
@ThuliMadonsela3
to go to hell, then telling us to protect black women. While also telling us to not be divided as black people. But also telling us to not come here with coconut logic. Issalot. I'm confused. What must we do then?
@tessie18
@PublicProtector
The question then boils down to bad vs good faith (plus all the other issues obviously) and I think the sloppiness of the investigation and lack of transparency doesn't help. Even the CJ was like let's not judge her too harshly for not being able to explain clearly.
Had such a privilege to talk politics
@DavidMashabela
in a long form format. No 30sec sound bite or a quick tweet. Just a fun nonstop discussion talking about the state of our politics. Give it a listen if you want to understand the change in our politics
You want us to buy local. Sho. Cool story. But what local good. Are we focusing on informal or formal markets. Are we buying more textile goods, manufactured, agricultural etc? What if they aren't on the shelves... Then what? Like just tell us my man. Thuma us!

Pensions are pensions. VBS scandal is atrocious.
But also, in terms of scale, surely there are other bigger players???
Fikile Mbalula is, in many ways, a metaphor for the ANC: utterly incompetent, utterly unaware of his incompetence, yet relentlessly rewarded promoted. His rise mirrors the ANC’s fall.
But also don't make a maths qualification the prerequisite for understanding election results, outcomes and seat allocation. The current system is unnecessarily complicated. Easy to explain on the surface, but really tricky once you get into the details
My thoughts about day 2. 1st: Fucking
