School of Slavonic & East European Studies (

) is the UK’s largest national centre for the study of Central, Eastern & South-East Europe & Russia
This evening we celebrate the SSEES legend that is Dr Pete Duncan. Whilst Pete remains a vital part of the SSEES community, through his work with the alumni association and appearances at events, we’ll all miss seeing him daily at the School. Happy Retirement, Dr Duncan!
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend & colleague Dr Philippa Hetherington, on Saturday 5 November. Philippa was an outstanding scholar who exuded warmth and enthusiasm in all that she did. She will be missed dearly.
Happy birthday to us! 107 years of SSEES, founded 19 October, 1915. The buildings may have changed over the years, but our mission to research and understand the region has not.
We are deeply saddened to learn of former student Armin Soldin's death in Ukraine. As a SSEES politics graduate (2013), the School send our sincere condolences to his friends, family and colleagues. This brings home yet again the devastation of this war.
Our 'SSEES on Ukraine' pages aim to provide a summary of media coverage from the SSEES community, legitimate resources and ways to help those in need. We'll update regularly, so watch this space:
