We were all shocked by the siege of the Capitol, but those who work behind the scenes in the legislative branch should know there are people all across the country who see you and support you. We will come back

Very often, when a senator dies, the Senate provides surviving family with ~ $100k. I’m not sure how many of them need it given the avg wealth of US Senators. It pains me to think Congress does not do that when a Capitol Police officer or other staffer dies in the line of duty.
My hot take: Democrats shouldn’t read tonight’s VA Guv race as a reflection of what they have or have not done in Congress this year.
They should read it as an anticipation of what they’ll be up against next year: a strategy of divisive racial politics.
If Capitol Police is having trouble filling open positions because they can't find candidates without white supremacist connections, we're in bigger trouble than expected.
Fools Summer today in DC, which is different from Fools Spring.
Fools Spring tricks you into thinking Spring has arrived when it has not. Fools Summer tricks you into thinking 90 degree days during actual Summer will be this pleasant. They won’t.
All of this fear speculation about a “paralyzed” Congress not being able to respond to the Israel situation. What do people think Congress is needed to do immediately in this situation? Pass a sense of the Congress resolution condemning Hamas?
BREAKING: Jordan cancels summit between Biden, King Abdulla, President Sisi and president Abbas planned for tomorrow in Amman, Jordanian foreign minister says
Congress gets trashed all the time, sometimes it's earned. But the stories that rarely get told are how thousands of Americans are helped each year in navigating the bureaucracy to solve their problems. Lawmaking looks glamorous, constituent service makes a difference.
Sen. Ossoff’s office always goes the extra mile to solve problems — no matter how big or small.
Wishing everyone across Georgia a merry Christmas, happy holidays, and a happy new year!
One thing I hope people takeaway from the

For all the ink spilled in WSJ editorials/opinions about the safety of Supreme Court justices, they were awfully quiet during 2020 when election officials were being harassed and threatened.
Folks, the people who know elections, we don’t know how many times we can tell you that a holiday creates impediments to voting, probably mostly for the people who already have difficulty voting.
@sullydish
This is not true and you're smart enough to do a little reading and find that out. It does not ban the use of these words. It makes the existing rules more inclusive by swapping terms like "parents" in for "mother" or "father." And has added benefit of being simpler. Do better.

If unannounced you suddenly descend upon a building where members of Congress are meeting and physically block entry/exit (a crime in DC), continue to do so after police tell you not to (also a crime)--and you do this knowing about Jan 6--you should expect a firm police response.

In 2011, when 30k NM households were w/o natural gas amid severe winter weather due to TX blackouts and other state failures, my boss, a US Senator, got to work on looking into what happened, figuring out how to help, making calls, and w/in weeks had hearings going. Cruz can too.
If this comes to a vote today and fails, I believe that would be the first failed House vote on impeachment since the first impeachment of President Andrew Johnson in 1867.
McCLINTOCK R-CA is a NO on Mayorkas impeachment, saying Rs have identified no impeachable crime.
That makes two NOs, along with Ken Buck
If those are the only nos, GOP can still pass resolution
I think the public would be surprised to learn there are many members living paycheck to paycheck.
Congressional salaries have not changed since 2009. And living in two places (district/state and DC) is expensive.
"What’s more likely is Johnson lives paycheck to paycheck — so much so that he doesn’t have enough money in his bank account to trigger the checking account disclosure rules for members of Congress."

With Pride month barely in the rearview mirror, it's heartbreaking to think of the bigotry and prejudice LGBTQ young people have to overcome every day.
Many would rather they feel different and isolated rather than welcome and appreciated.
A fairly classic, if unfortunate, agency vs inspector general conflict. The watchdog asked for records. Secret Service refused or deflected. The IG went to Congress, as they are statutorily encouraged to do in these situations. Agency suddenly finds records.
Well done IG.
If a male staffer made questionable and sexually suggestive posts about a female senator on their personal social media accounts, they would be fired. It shouldn’t matter if the staffer in question is gay or not. The end.

I don't think we want senators cosponsoring bills without evaluating them. For one, poor drafting is a thing, especially when it comes to bills from the House.
I know this *seems* like a distinction without a difference, but the Senate Parliamentarian does not make rulings. The presiding officer does. And those can be challenged by the Senate.
The parliamentarian is an advisory role. Point your ire in the right direction.
Anyone who posted about lines in GA on Monday should read this. Most people have never spent time in a polling place other than to cast a ballot.
We have a lines problem in this country. Monday’s were unusual and potentially unavoidable, but unlikely they were intentional.
This
@ajc
article on lines at the polls is a good case study of the "elbow of pain" at work. Small changes to service times and reductions in capacity can have huge effects on wait times:
'We're seeing record numbers' at polls -
Wishing all the best for the senator. Without making assumptions, an extended absence is not unusual in the Senate for health issues. Mark Kirk was absent for a year after his stroke and Tim Johnson was absent about as long after a brain hemorrhage.

First, the Governor of California, under the state’s law and the US Constitution, may appoint a temporary successor to fill out the remainder of her term, ending January 3, 2025.
I remember when Appropriations was the only committee anyone had the gall to proceed with "powerful." Last week, Sen. Ossof called Intel "selective and powerful." Now we're supposed to believe COMMERCE is powerful? I won't stand for it.
GOP Leader Mitch McConnell exercised his authority to remove Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) from the powerful Senate Commerce Committee, according to sources familiar with decision.
Conservatives think it's payback for Scott's leadership challenge in Nov.
The American people want to know what elected lawmakers are talking about behind closed doors. Choosing party leaders in closed-door meetings outside the view of the American people!
I'm very skeptical of the idea that any speaker has much ability to disrupt the electoral count process.
1) The electoral count relevant provisions of the Constitution do not even mention the speaker.
@varadmehta
No one, not even an ex-president, can refuse a lawful congressional subpoena free from legal consequences.
On what authority would the Secret Service resist law enforcement attempts to procure an ex-president’s presence in such a situation?
Could...could a World Series win finally be what it takes to convince the rest of America that DC is a real place where real Americans live and they deserve full representation in Congress? Stay tuned.

To the parents of the small child eating pizza in Lincoln Park: I am sorry Lily abused her off-leash privileges and ate your son’s dinner.
She on the other hand, is quite pleased with herself.
I don’t cry often. That’s between me and my therapist. But this moment, watching our Capitol under attack by a violent mob incited by President Trump, watching public servants and friends and people who have protected me under attack, has brought me to tears.
The State Department IG’s firing is not the same as Trump’s removal of HHS IG Grimm or the DoD IG Fine. It’s likely worse.
IG Linick at State was a permanent, Senate-confirmed IG. The others were acting. This is an even bolder and more troubling move against accountability.
No offense to my lawyer friends and colleagues but everyone who has ever worked in government knows that the counsel’s office is where you go looking for no’s.
Even so, the sum of the opinions here seems to be that whatever a majority agrees to is legitimate.
NEW: Several former House lawyers tell us that the notion of a temporary speaker calling up legislation — without the explicit authorization of the full chamber — would invite serious legal challenges.

Just a quick thank you to everyone who sent messages of support and love. I feel undeterred, thanks to you, and plan to report the incident.
In the meantime, keep up the fight for the democracy that has always been America's great, yet unachieved, aspiration.
If this doesn’t give you a sense of where even the Senate moderates (a conservative Dem here) are moving, I don’t know what will. At some point, a prerogative can be so abused that it’s existence poses a threat to the institution. Unlimited debate is getting very close 1/2

Frankly, I don’t think news networks should be paying anyone retainers (let alone 6 figure retainers) to appear and give opinion commentary. Pay the journalists. Invite the others. The drive for celebrity will be payment enough.
It is one thing for Republicans to say the Trump campaign is entitled to exhaust all legal avenues. It is another for Republicans to stand by while the administration--overtly and outwardly--claims victory and makes plans accordingly. Donald Trump has not won reelection.
Unabashed Senate enthusiast here. The Senate has notable and noble attributes, but idea that the Senate floor is a shrine to *democracy* has some foundational flaws.
The U.S. Capitol is, or should be, thought of as the temple of the world’s oldest continuous democracy. Within that, the Senate floor is its most sacred space. Throughout history, those who participated in its proceedings dressed accordingly. Until now.

These issues are easy to demagogue but facts are facts. House Dems made this change. It had bipartisan support from a respected committee studying challenges facing Congress. Skyrocketing DC cost of living was seen as a barrier to working class representatives. AOC, Porter etc.

This is true and we also must confront our own, relatively new (and in my opinion misguided) societal desire for constant exposure. The presidency is a job that is mostly done not in the eye of the public. That is not a bad thing.
I've come to appreciate Biden's decidedly less flashy approach to politics. He has been criticized for not making enough public appearances but that's not how he views the job. Biden believes the President is not meant to be the center of attention. A workhorse not a showhorse.

Congress used to offer much more rigorous procedural training to staff. There was even a multi-day interactive training. With cuts to CRS budgets, away went the training. Bad for rank-and-file, good for party leadership.
