signed Royston Drenthe in 2013, 6 years on from him winning Euro u21 Player of the Tournament, after he failed to realise his undoubted potential at Real Madrid.
We took a little look at what would have happened had this been an ongoing trend for the Royals.
Exciting news - we’re expanding!
We’re on the hunt for two enthusiastic, innovative football lovers to join the team here at The Gaffer!
I’d like to be upfront and say that the positions are currently voluntary - but if you may be interested give us a shout for more info!

Spare a thought today for poor Chris Rigg.
15 years old, scoring a 91st minute FA Cup winner against Prem opposition, only for it to be ruled out by a late flag.
And he’s got an English mock on Monday morning.

Not a bad finish from birthday boy Emre Can, who somehow only turns 29 today despite being around forever.
Now plying his trade for Dortmund, after a short spell at Juventus, there’s one thing that can’t be denied about Emre - he never has a single hair out of place.

On This Day: 2005
Roy Carroll gave it his all to ensure that goal-line technology would one day be introduced in the Premier League. Although it wasn’t until 2013 it came into effect; it was Pedro Mendes’ strike that was given as an example every single time.
Today is Bobby Zamora’s birthday - here he is scoring a last minute winner in the Play Off final.
Bobby is one of just two players to score a Premier League penalty with each foot (on separate occasions, not like Mitro). Can you name the other?
I have worked with Brits in the past. They are by far the laziest bunch (and I have worked with Greeks too). You cannot catch them after lunch on Friday. Forget getting hold of anyone after the 21st of December. They are a fairly miserable purposeless bunch just getting through
It's a bank holiday, we'll be shipping out Issue 2 during the beginning of September, and we've decided to celebrate.

“Like Jimi wasn’t the first to play the guitar or Ronaldinho didn’t invent the ‘flick-flack’, Quaresma was the one to perfect it, and throughout his career, utilise it to devastating effect. The trivela belongs to him.”

Think how cool you’ll look on your summer hols, daiquiri in one hand, The Gaffer Mag in the other. Maybe a pair of shades like Carlo’s there.
Covering everything from Reggiolo to the Ev, with a bit of Berlusconi thrown in. Go on, you know you want to.
All our pre-orders have now been shipped off and should land on your doorsteps over the next few days.

Each issue of The Gaffer will focus on a different manager, and articles will splinter off from the obvious to the more bizarre, tenuous links.
We’ve got some amazing illustrators on board and some of the best writers about.

Don Carlo. Some nerd has done the maths and he’s won over 10% of Champions League/European Cups ever.
Help him celebrate by pre-ordering Issue Two of our mag. It’s what he’d want you to do.
LIMITED OFFER:
Use the code MOTHERSDAY to get a copy of Issue One for just £6!
May or may not be inspired by my Nan asking me to get the remaining copies out of her spare room - so come on, buy one for Mo!
Happy birthday James Milner.
An ever-present in the Premier League since its formation in 1992, he’s won ‘Ran Furthest In Pre-Season’ at every club he’s been at. And ‘Most Boring.’ Probably.
Enjoy this clip of him scoring for Leeds against Chelsea aged just 16.
It’s Georgia Stanway’s birthday today.
To celebrate her turning 24, sit back and re-watch her extra-time worldie against Spain that saw England book a place in the Semi’s on their way to winning Euro 2022.
It’s Thursday night. You’re bored. The Barca vs Real Madrid game is on the telly, but you aren’t really paying attention. Why not do a little quiz to kill some time?

Happy birthday to ‘La Fiera’, Maxi Rodriguez, who turns 42 today.
Spending most of his 20’s in Spain for Espanyol and Atletico Madrid, the Argentinian also had a short but memorable stint in the Premier League.
Think he might have saved his best goal for Argentina though.

A perfect stocking filler or a nice treat for yourself. You deserve it.
The Royals christen their ninth consecutive season in the Championship by signing William Carvalho, who craved stability after 3 managers in 3 years at Betis.
Rewarded with 4 managers in 12 months and a 21st placed finish, Carvalho said "at least I got to play with Drinkwater."
Nothing like a new book arriving on the first day of the Easter holidays. Cheers
@RabbitRabbitOn
- looking forward to getting stuck into this this week!
While he might have beaten Chris Eubank Jr last night, Liam “Beefy” Smith didn’t fare quite as well today.
Awarded a penalty to equalise with 5 minutes left in an FA Sunday Cup game, Smith fired wide as they lost 1-0.
Declan Rice turns 24 today.
Firmly established as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Prem at West Ham, when he tunes in to watch Match of the Day next season he’ll surely be at another club.
Who’s our money on?
GIVEAWAY: 19th November is the deadline for the LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION giveaway.

Thankyou Gaffer. A top manager & even more importantly a brilliant and caring man. Your impact on my career and life outside of football is something I’ll be grateful for forever. Good luck with whatever is next 🙏❤️

2019 now, and midfield maestro Thiago decides he still needs to be taught a thing or two - who better to show him the ropes than Charlie Adam?
Adam would leave such an impact on the Spaniard that he joined Liverpool at the end of the season to continue the Scotsman's legacy.
Big fan of Reims getting fined £22k per game because Will Still hasn’t got the required coaching badges, and persisting with him whilst he’s unbeaten in 14 domestic games.

Had they begun in 2006, they'd have rescued 2000 winner Andrea Pirlo from Milan to partner Steve Sidwell in the middle of the park during the Royals' debut Prem season. We're sure avoiding relegation would have been preferable to playing annoying extra games to win the CL.
