Understanding Solarpunk: How the movement can inspire sustainable businesses
"Solarpunk is about creativity and imagination. It's about imagining a better future and then working to make that vision a reality."
When we had our third child I bought an M1 Abrams. It’s very safe and built like a tank.
We always had larger SUVs like Yukons which have no chance against mines and Anti Tank artillery.
The lives of my children are too important to risk to another driver.

Seriously a neighborhood full of kids being ridden around in these is way safer than a neighborhood of kids being driven around in tanks.
I would never consider bringing kids somewhere that is designed to support the latter
@sdut
Every time you see an e-scooter someone got there on a scooter instead of driving. Zero people have been killed by being run over by scooters. There are trade-offs and scooters are obviously better than cars down town
Why are they hosting an anti density rally in Old Town?
Because it's the most pleasant place to meet up with people in the city?? And also the most dense neighborhood???🐸🍵
A friend and I saved 17 huge white oak trees from invasive English ivy today.
White oaks can live to be 450 years old. These trees belong to our grandkids and their grandkids

I can't think of a single worse use of resources (besides maybe poisoning wells?) than widening highways in tysons
You reeeeeally think one more lane is going to fix this?
Do you live in the Washington region? Do you…go places sometimes? The Transportation Planning Board wants your comments on its long-range transportation plan.
@betterdcregion
dives into what it contains and why it should change:
When they build highrise apartment buildings why are there only "luxury" units?
Because we mostly banned middle size apartments and multi-family's that are cheaper per sq ft to build
We should pass a statewide law that invalidates all zoning, covenants, and HOA agreements barring non whites from owning property - not just leave them intact except for the racial segregation.
@the_transit_guy
Louden silver line has opened least week.
Population: 421,000.
Population that can walk, bike, scooter, wheelchair, etc to the train: 0
This isn't urban dwellers deciding to become farmers - it's suburbanites destroying forests & farms to build ugly mcmansions.
Increase density in the urban areas to preserve rural ones!
Opinion: We’re seeing a historic turnaround. Most rural counties now see more people moving in than moving out.
However, Fairfax County and Virginia Beach have posted the biggest population declines in the state.
@ChrisUnits
Genius. I love the idea of a city developing a unique architecture style around an old by-right loophole. That's how cities get character
I made a few with midjourney
If I buy a brand new 7,000 lbs F-150 truck, with a 1,500 pound battery I will get $7,500 in tax credits for saving the environment.
But if I take the bus and own no car I get nothing.
Exurbsn nimbys: We don't need urbanism, central cities, or transit, because everything is on line
Also exurban nimbys: Don't build data centers here
Have I got that right?
Even in the snow hundreds came out for the Missing Middle Housing rally in Arlington
NAACP, Sierra Club, VOICE interfaith, Dems, Independents, Republicans, League of Women Voters, and YIMBYs all united for housing
Our victory is inevitable
@MoCoMikeE
The only unit that matters is the neighborhood to nimby's - which very undemocratically is the only unit that doesn't vote in elections or have representation from elections
We ♥️ ADUs
They create spaces for seniors to age in place with their family, make home ownership more affordable, and increase the types of housing available.
Thank you for your leadership

I am proud to be sponsoring SB304 this year to help Virginians with the skyrocketing cost of housing. I have heard from so many Virginians who are being priced out of our communities due to a shortage of diverse and creative housing options.
Due to budget cuts, the DC metro plans to shut down 10 stations with the lowest ridership. See the chart and table for more details. Full data:

Boston 1775: “What if we built more land to provide the housing needed to support our growing city!?”
Boston 2024: “60 years ago someone arbitrarily decided that we can’t build anything but single family homes on 90% of the land around Downtown so I guess we’re SOL…”
On April 9th, 2021 my friend Jim Pagels was hit and killed by a driver in a car while biking home from getting a covid shot.
Hours before his preventable death he posted this:
Dag, unanimous rejection of

's amendments of
@CandiMundonKing
's bill to nix Virginia's Sons of Confederate Veterans and Robert E. Lee special license plates.

I'm not at war with people who live in single family homes, or the homes themselves, or quiet neighborhoods, or even the concept of suburbs
I'm at war with exclusionary zoning that stifles housing supply & historically was created specifically to enforce racial segregation
Every time someone books a flight between any Northeast corridor cities the checkout screen should be legally required to show them train tickets for the same trip
The squirrels got a couple of them but my garlic is popping off and survived the snow. I should have about 40 heads of garlic when I harvest in a 2 months
Just going to say it..

Less parking at bars encourages walking, will lead to less drunk drivers, and more safety in our communities.
A downtown bar does not need 39 parking spaces
For the first time in human history the majority of people live in cities. Smart urbanism is essential to humanity's future.
Solarpunk VC has made a $1k micro grant to the Coalition for Smarter Growth
@betterDCregion
, to support smart & long term urban planning in the DC region.
People like cruises because it's the only time they get to live in a dense walkable mixed use neighborhood
We could build neighborhoods like this on land you know
@dpherriges
HOAs were specifically invented to enforce racial segregation. We should be actively dismantling them.
Let's get a law on the books at the state level that says every 10 years a majority of homeowners must opt in for the HOA to continue to exist
@TheGattoniCelli
Some places are better with less people, like the forests and natural lands. We can have more of those if we live just a tiny bit closer to each other
Final peppers from the garden this morning. We finally had a deep enough frost to kill everyone in the garden beds so this will be my final harvest of the year.
@TheLastFarm
"first we're going to light carbon on fire to get energy, then we're going to spend more energy than we produce to capture burned carbon"
Literally like doing this and thinking you figured out infinite energy:
Dear people against red light cameras, do you think motion sensor street lights that turn on late at night when you walk by are an invasion of your privacy?
Local reporting on non- partisan issues is essential for the longevity of our democracy.
We need better funding mechanisms for news that brings us together instead of pitting us against each other.
I'm thinking about things like: zoning! sports stadiums! data centers! transportation! mental health care!
For me, one of the great joys of listening to NPR is hearing those issues covered by local reporters and elevated to a national audience.
💧Every raindrop of water that falls on my home goes to Tripps Run -> Lake Barcroft -> Holmes Run -> Hunting Creek -> Potomac River -> Chesapeake Bay Mesohaline -> Atlantic Ocean
Watersheds are amazing. All other human created boundaries are imagined
@michael_wiebe
"we can't build new homes until the infrastructure is there first!"
Okay let's build a bunch of new schools, day cares, hospitals, city services, renewable energy capacity, and public transit
"Let's not"
You can't just get rid of the racial segregation part, we need to destroy and dismantle all the policies used to enforce it: SFH only-zoning, HOAs, highway projects that split neighborhoods, gerrymandering and more. All of it.
