So grateful to confirm that I passed my PhD defence today!! Thankful to my two examiners
@DrAmosYong
and
@AnthonyGReddie
for the great questions and discussion. Special thanks to
@dradavies
for seeing me all the way through! It is PHinisheD!!
“Before a man could even preach the word, God trusted a woman to carry it for 9 months”
Let me lie down.
Rev Dr Otis III is PREACHIN’ like its Sunday morning service on this zoom.
@om3
For the record: as a Christian and a theologian I will forever be against the weaponising of scripture, read selectively, to reinforce the exclusion and dehumanisation of those who are already marginalised in the church and the world
I have drafted, deleted and re-drafted so many tweets about what has happened to Child Q but the reality is I do not have the words.
The aunties at church used to say that when you don’t have the words, sometimes all you can do is groan.
So I’m groaning for our children.
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that after 2 wonderful years at Durham, I have just been appointed Lecturer in Theology and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh
@uoedivinity
😊
I have received so many lovely welcome emails and can’t wait to join this phenomenal team!
I would also like to add - since we’re on the topic - that black men (especially those in the public eye) should not need to be Christian, public about their faith, or feeding hungry children to be noticed and offered love and support by the Church. They are precious regardless.
People have asked me about books to read. Part of me wants to say you can find books on race/Britain/theology the same way you can find books on everything else - this is a prime example of what it means to 'do the work'. The other part of me decided to be kind and offer a list:
Today three courageous and inspiring people are being made bishops in the
@churchofengland
@Lustherev
@LynneCullens
and Saju Muthalaly. It feels historic and I have the privilege of preaching at the consecration this morning
@StPaulsLondon
. Prayers appreciated for the day ahead!
Lots of white Christians/church leaders are feeling pressured to post in order to prove they are not racist. I can understand that at a time when we judge everyone on what they do and do not say on social media the pressure is real. But there are a few traps to avoid:
My podcast launches tomorrow morning 😁
Sunday School for Misfits is a space for critical conversations about Christianity which welcomes everyone but centres Black Millennials in Britain. Available on Spotify, Apple and Google podcasts.
Really sorry I can’t hand out lollipops
At the risk of raining on everyone’s parade…
It should take much more than simply claiming to be influenced by a Christian sermon, for Christians in the UK to get excited about a candidate for PM.
Please don’t be that easily won.
The news about Sarah Everard has weighed on me so much.
I have also been disturbed by the question of why some women seem to deserve vigils and protests while others do not.
Why wasn't the nation moved when Nicole Smallman & Bibaa Henry were stabbed to death in a park?
A Note: Racist stereotypes of black men as criminals is reinforced every time you have a 'black-man-saved-from-gangs' redemption story on stage in a white majority church. The majority of black men have never been involved in crime. Where are those stories during testimony time?
My dad and brothers didn’t believe I was asked by a journalist to help with an article about footballers but here it is. Great to chat with
@fernville
about black Christianity in Britain and faith for black millennials
Today I have spent too much time blocking/reporting abusive messages sent to me by angry white men about a tweet I did not send.
I just prayed and gave a talk which reminded me of better things and I am grateful for streams in the desert.
Don't ask if I am ok. Fight racism.
On Sunday the OT scripture reading was God judging those who exploit their workers.
20 mins later the intercessor prayed 'that all those striking would put love of others above their self interest'.
I almost screamed, but I am new around here and pretending to work in finance.
So the word is out! I am honoured to be the author of the Archbishop’s Lent book 2024
@SPCKPublishing
!
Tarry Awhile is about the God who meets us all in the dark, and speaks to us through the testimonies of our global family.
Its still advent though so you can wait a bit 🤣
Crucial question of the discussion: why are white male theologians seen as relevant for all people, while women theologians are seen as relevant only for women, and black theologians seen as relevant only for black people?
#bodiesandpedagogies
I’m a theologian. I’m interested in all kinds of political issues, social change, justice, spirituality and ethics. Not just race. If I accept your invitation to talk about race, will you be able to see me as more than just ‘the black person we call to write/talk about race’?
My first book is out in the world!! 🥹
So proud to have reached this milestone, and to end this year with such a highlight.
Launch events will come in 2024, please have a look and consider recommending to libraries/those with healthy book budgets 🤣
Lament is not anti-hope…it is a form of hope…an innate awareness that what is, should not be.
Spirituality that depends on positivity will lead not only to emotional fallacies but also eventually to delusions of all kinds.
- Cole Arthur Riley, This Here Flesh
Can we talk about how working from home meant 18 months free from racial micro-aggressions, cultural tensions, sexual harassment and other forms of workplace madness for many? And how going back to the office means extra emotional and mental labour for many of us or...?
I am delighted and very excited to announce that the amazing Dr Selina Stone (
@SelinaRStone
) will be starting work with the
@CommonAwards
team in September! Selina will be our new Postdoctoral Research Associate in Theological Education, picking up the baton from
@everparker
.
Just a reminder that if our vision for racial justice focuses solely on black middle class concerns about micro-aggressions in the office and access to positions of senior leadership it is insufficient.
The 'least of these' in black communities must be at the centre.
Selah.
Listen to the black people who do not pander to white fragility.
“Thank you for speaking graciously” often = “thank you for filtering your anguish and reality so its not too difficult for white people to hear.”
I’m doing this less and less. You need to get used to discomfort.
Trying to listen to Jill Scott and sip my gin but the Spirit won’t let me rest.
Racial justice is for the restoration of humanity not just black people - humanity is undermined as a whole when our dignity is denied, our full expression hindered, the image of God in us, rejected.
So the news is out today that I will be leaving St Mellitus at the end of this academic year! I have had the privilege of working alongside some incredible people and teaching brilliant students from around the country, including being a formation tutor for priests in training
It is this kind of theological formation that allowed slavery to continue ‘because Paul said slaves obey your masters‘. The anguish of women, children & men made no difference to those so desperate to ‘be biblical’ & so unaware of the agendas deforming their interpretation
I don't have words for how ashamed I am of the British government who refuse to do what is right and just in relation to asylum seekers.
Constantly using the word 'illegal' when it is not illegal, refusing basic protections, pandering to hatred to get people on side.
Ashamed.
"Thank you George Floyd for sacrificing your life for justice" is everything that is wrong with redemptive violence narratives.
His life was stolen
Do the stories we tell about Jesus' death reinforce the idea that death by violence can be good 'in the end'?
Asking for a friend
This term I am excited to be leading a research project on the well-being of UKME Clergy in the Church of England alongside the legends Carlton Turner
@queensfdn
and
@TamandaWalker
! This will sit alongside the wider study by the CofE National Ministry Team on Clergy Wellbeing
I have been in church long enough to have my radar on high alert when it comes to Christian celebrities.
But somehow whenever new allegations come out, I still feel sick, shocked, and disappointed.
I am aware investigations are ongoing re: Soul Survivor, but these stories 😢
Womanist theology feels like:
sitting in my nan's kitchen eating red pea soup & talking about life & God
telling the aunties at church my fears & having them listen and hug me while praying
my mom telling me about the Jesus she believed in who knew her name & heard her prayers
"Welcome home" were the words of a random lady at Montego Bay Airport when I landed on Dec 12.
She didn't know it, but I almost burst into tears. So began almost two weeks in Jamaica which have caused me to feel reborn in ways I needed but didn't think possible. Beyond grateful.
So...
Church benefits from enslavement of Africans & uses blood money to fund ministry
Church repents by assigning funds to address its sins and racism in general
People get mad that the church doesn't keep blood money to sustain church ministry
Is that what I am seeing?
I'm getting requests to speak at various zoom events, as are several of my friends. We have our own healing to do and we also have jobs we'd like to keep. Please ask yourself - have we taken advantage of the resources online and in books, which might help us do some groundwork?
Been a
@lecrae
fan since Day 1 still appreciating the journey...but not as much as those people who literally wouldn’t let him go when he crowd surfed 😂 Amazing night!
All Souls Day taught me to love the Anglican church calendar. My mom’s birthday is the 31st Oct and the anniversary of her death is the 4th Nov. For the last four years All Souls Day has given me sacred space to remember her and has given me peace and hope. I’m grateful today.
14 year-old Dea-Jon was chased by a group of white men/boys in Kingstanding, Bham & stabbed to death. People heard them shouting “get the ni**er” as they chased him.
White supremacist violence alive and well, but lets keep saying its an American problem.
Ahem. I just want to SHOUT OUT to all the single women who are absolutely going for it in this life; pursuing callings, living and loving boldly and generously, shaking off fear, excelling in work, pushing boundaries, leading well. I see you and I am proud to be among you queens!
Let every Londoner understand:
Saying you 'really miss' someone or 'its been such a long time we have to catch up' followed by 'let me know when you come to London' is not the extension of friendship you think it is.
YOU CAN TRAVEL TOO.
Here endeth the lesson.
Resist the temptation to make grand statements about racial inclusion and justice if your own leadership in this area is weak. This is the time for you to interrogate your own whiteness and the ways it functions as a dominating cultural force in your church/organisation
What a blessed day I won't forget!😃My family came to surprise me as I preached
@StPaulsLondon
this morning - I burst into tears when I saw them 😭 What a privilege to preach here 50 years after Mrs King. Thank you to the clergy and staff who were so friendly and put me at ease
Before I was a Black woman I was a Black schoolgirl.
I took buses to school in the inner city of Brum where people smoked weed in the morning. I’m sure I carried the smell some days.
I don’t know if I would have recovered from being strip searched at school, on my period
Today my report on UKME/GMH clergy wellbeing is published after months of listening, analysis and writing. It has been a privilege. Thanks to those who shared their experiences of joy and pain and may the actions be taken to correct the harm being done:
*Public service announcement*
I am not engaging in Twitter discussions/debates about my book or the themes it raises to safeguard my mental health. Feel free to deal with anyone who misrepresents my words or is unkind, but please do not tag me. Thanks 🙏🏽
Thank you Anglican Twitter for all your help - the Special License was granted by the Faculty office and my sisters wedding will go ahead as planned 😊🎉
Special thanks to the kind and understanding people at the Faculty Office and whoever else was involved 😌
Very excited to be on my way to
@durham_uni
to meet new colleagues for the first time and to see some familiar faces after a long time😀
Grateful for the sunrise I witnessed,
@leonrestaurants

@TrainSplit
for saving me a ton of money 😅
#FirstDayFeelings
Unity talk seems very problematic when the matters at hand are life & death for some, but a power game for others.
How do you have unity with people who do not believe you have a right to exist?
How do you 'disagree well' with those who would deny your very humanity?
🤔
I am going through the proof of my book The Spirit and the Body (on pentecostal womanist ethics) and I am proud, and grieving.
Mainly I wish my mom was here to see it, because she deserved to. The book is dedicated to her: "my mother in Spirit and Body." Can't wait to share it!
Racism may be seeming clearer to you now but it has layers of nuances that black thinkers have been articulating for decades, so get to know Anthony Reddie, Mukti Barton and Robert Beckford just to name a few. There is lots to understand and you have a long road ahead of you
Churches and Christian organisations seriously need to be aware of how unpaid internships financially hamper young people and ostracise working classes. If
@theologycentre
hadn’t put their money where there mouth was when it came to justice I wouldn’t be where I am today.
For the UK context specifically:
Akala - Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire
Robert Beckford - Jesus is Dread
Afua Hirsch - Brit(ish)
David Olusoga - Black and British: A Forgotten History
Anthony Reddie - Is God Colour Blind?
Anthony Reddie - Working against the grain
So pleased to have been able to record a Lent talk for
@BBCRadio4
where I reflect on Mary’s loss and the impact of violence on young people and families in the UK today. Available for 33 days on
@BBCSounds
The ways in which white culture/norms are often seen as superior/proper/'just the way we do things' in many church contexts/organisations when there are several ethnic groups, is the thin edge of the white supremacy wedge that killed George Floyd. It all needs to be rooted out.
When it was discovered that police had taken pictures of their dead bodies and sent them around, why wasn't the nation in uproar?
It is because they were black women from a council estate?
Is our national compassion limited to those who look like the majority?
I'm just asking.
This 'them' and 'us' language in the media reporting on strikes is driving me nuts.
The nurses ARE 'us', they look after 'us' when few are prepared to do so, and they want more staff to be able to care for 'us.'
Keep your claps and pay them
@RishiSunak
#NursesStrike
For those of you who are Anglicans/interested
@AzariahAnglican
is publishing a book giving you a historical tour of institutional racism in the Church of England. It disturbing but wonderfully/clearly written, and essential reading
Watching
#politicslive
debate about whether
@JustinWelby
is overstepping by speaking up about the plight of the poor and exploited workers. The answer is NO. FYI what he is speaking of is centuries older than the left/right political divide. He is reminding us of the Gospel.
On a zoom call with young people from Birmingham talking about protecting themselves against being drawn into youth violence, processing trauma of videos on social media and dealing with conflict.
This is why the only kind of theologian I can be is a public/political one.
Last night I dreamt of a woman weeping over her starving child. This evening I read about the
#YemenCrisis
. Our sisters and brothers need our solidarity.
A footballer convinced our government to feed 1.3m children in England, 12m children in Yemen have no one to fight for them.
Me: we need to think critically about how we understand God’s power, our own agency and powers beyond our control.
Also me: Jesus I beg you don’t let my flight get cancelled.
😂🤣😂
Thank you for your witness,
@ScholarPriest
. I cannot tell you how stress inducing it is to watch this kind of debate happening on TV in 2024. At this point, people are literally making up history and data to silence Black voices and its infuriating.
Good to be part of the dialogue
@bbcsml
on reparations today - we desperately need a serious, intellectually robust, historically informed and theological public conversation about the involvement of the Church and the Worlds involvement in enslavement.
The manuscript has been sent folks!!!!
I feel relieved and so excited 😆
And very happy to have tomorrow off so I can recover! 😅
Thanks for the encouraging messages ❤️
Opening up my thesis to start turning it into a book and I am SO excited.
Also thinking, I really crammed in way too much 😂😂 Fresh eyes will really help me sharpen it and I am glad to have had the gap.
Prayers and well wishes appreciated!
A scholarship is available
@unibirmingham
for a Black British researcher who wants to undertake a PhD project with Black majority churches in Birmingham based in anthropology/African studies. This is an excellent opportunity.
Deadline 30 April. Details:
On Monday and Tuesday I taught classes on race and reconciliation, which I always feel anxious about because I fear being met with anger for telling hard truths which disturb people. But this week students listened, confessed, lamented and planned to do better. Praise God
Celebrating Kamala Harris’ historic appointment.
Also longing for the day when people of colour can lead as individuals judged by the job they do rather than viewed as representatives of entire groups.
The pressure is a lot.
For now I am simply going to rest and recuperate over the summer break, as I explore what the next step might be on this fascinating journey. I have a retreat booked and a family holiday in store so any other post-phd, post-pandemic recovery ideas are more than welcome 🤣
When
@JarelRB
spoke to Willie Jennings’ assertion that community depends not on dialogue but on desiring to be with one another, by asking why certain people are undesired, I felt that.
#SST21
As annoying as this is for all of us, imagine for a second that you’re a member of SAGE giving all the data and warnings you can to the PM, to then watch him ignore your advice, then weeks later go back to what you said when the damage has been done/will now be worse... Imagine
Every time someone says ‘I know I’m not your target audience but the podcast is helping me process X’ I think YES because when black women do womanist work which challenges multiple forms of inequity, exclusion and injustice, it benefits EVERYONE 😁
So the Windrush report is out today, which is interesting timing on the part of the Home Office - and by interesting I mean, clearly-planned-for-a-day-when-everyone-is-freaking-out-about-survival-and-won't-want-to-think-about-anything-else. Anyway
I just spent ages trying to think of a woman theologian who has written about power from a pentecostal perspective, for my MA module. So I search using some key words...and low and behold my own paper pops up, so I skim it and think oh yeah this is what I need

One day I was on my way to a date and my grandad called me randomly. I told him where I was going and he said:
“These days people talk a lot about love but few people know what love is. Always remember, there’s no such thing as love without respect”
A word for

My sister gave birth to a healthy baby on 21 Dec and life will never be the same. Coming to terms with going back to work and not being able to pop over to hold and stare at her for hours or help by doing chores/laundry. Starting a petition for aunt-ernity leave immediately 😭

We have lost the wonderful Joel Edwards
@NigPat
today who was to me an adopted uncle, a friend, encourager and pastor. I am heartbroken but grateful to have had so many conversations and moments of laughter with him. Please pray for his family especially at this time
Everyone wants to be loved.
Everyone needs kindness.
Everyone wants to feel they matter.
Everyone needs to be heard.
Everyone wants to have peace.
Everyone needs joy.
We are all so similar underneath it all. Can we ease one another’s journey? We’re not here long after all...
One thing about the British establishment, if you’re in, you are REALLY in.
Imagine being found to have lied to parliament and still being able to send your friends to the House of Lords.
I’m astounded at the extent to which the privileges of the elite are protected.
How can we protect Black children in such a world?
How can we keep children from the violence of those who treat them with hatred and suspicion?
How can we do what the mother of Moses did, when she hid her child in the reeds along the river bank from the violence of Pharaoh?
In view of trying new things, you can hear me on the Moral Maze on
@BBCRadio4
at 8pm this evening. We talked about justice, peace and forgiveness with a focus on Northern Ireland. Not the easiest topics with very little time but I think it was ok!
As we can’t go to my nan’s this Christmas, my sister and I just made our own Jamaican rum cake for the first time and almost got drunk tasting the cake mix.
Part of me thinks we went a bit too far with the Wray and Nephew’s. 99% of me thinks we got it spot on.
Let me give you a tip.
If you go to a "Caribbean restaurant" and you don't see aunties and uncles in the kitchen with hair nets on and the back door open to let all the heat out because the ventilation system doesn't exist or doesn't work fast enough: just leave.
#TurtleBay
Really thankful for my MA students today, as we grieved the news of Jean Vanier's sexual abuse of women, in the context of discussions of theology and power. We got to pray.
Each of us has the capacity to abuse power, if we think we are above it we deceive ourselves.
Off to the House of Lords today for a roundtable with
@LordHastings
and
@BCWLindsay
@PowerTheFightUK
to present a theology of engagement with violence affecting young people. Carrying Brum, my brothers words and the work of the great Joel Edwards in my heart and mind 🙂
Tonight I’ll be on ITV1 taking part in a report on Faith and the Windrush at 6pm. I will not be watching my bit but I’ll definitely tune in for the rest 🤣
