Using the full weight of the government to take down one person is wild.
Congress couldn't do that for the Flint water crisis, not the Texas energy grid, and couldn't even muster up courage to charge leaders for Appalachians dealing with Black lung.
The difference....
BREAKING: Congress Widens Investigation into Harvard to Include Plagiarism Allegations Against President Claudine Gay
@cam_kettles
&
@HaidarEmma
report.
Timeline is filled with Black higher Ed professionals understanding the moment. This was NOT singularly a plagerism scandal. This was a strong arm moment to get back to the good ole days, & commit to keeping people in their place.
Will Congress & political operatives stop here?
My thoughts:

If you are Black and aspire to positions of power and authority, make sure you are 1 billion times better and more qualified. It's not good enough to be on par, nor will they ever see you as being the most qualified.
In the current climate it isn't inconceivable that Harvard may be forced to make a personnel decision based on government intervention. Harvard would gain nothing in the public square, but faculty members who receive federal dollars may sleep easier.
@lopez_wd
Oh we know why this happening! Taking down this Black women in the name of Anti-DEI will chill any atmosphere for any non-white person to head an elite prestigious entity in this country. The scrutiny we are told is to always be squeaky clean, if not you'll be like Gay.
My kids school district is over using the term "Antiracist", and it's bothering me. 🙄😫🤦🏾♂️
I remember when the phrases "social justice" and "culturally responsive ___" was in every sentence.
I'm just a Black parent looking for results, not terms. But, who am I?😔
@ChecKtheCircuiT
@Nina_Metz
Individuals can be upset, that is not up for debate. I am speaking about the federal government involving itself into a personal private organization personnel matter. What is the role of the federal government in this matter? NONE!
Can we re-evaluate the term "POC" (People of Color)?
- Educators are we setting students up for failure by overusing the term?
- Quant folks do you collapse demo just for significants, forgetting differences (eraser)
Is this truly a safe space for Black Americans?
Congrats to all those who have recently secured Academic jobs! You all deserve everything! 🙌🏾
Now, can we find space to talk about how we are producing more PhDs than available jobs each year. Where are the other stories? Do we allow space for supporting those? Or, do we shame?
I've been "Black" with a capital B my entire life, with the occasional "African-American" designation. I get into higher education, and now I'm a "Person Of Color".
Not tuday....

I am confident in saying Corporations/Boards will think twice about hiring due to the unwanted attention of a Black person to the top position. Even if the person is overqualified, they will have to spend time convincing people it was the right choice.
With BU Learn from Anywhere guidelines students have the ability to attend classes as they please. It is Nov. 9th and the numbers have dwindled to zero. I have finally been stood up and everyone (48 students) is online, but me! 🤷🏾♂️
The anti-CRT, pro-whitewashed history crowd is becoming louder. What will be the long term impacts in the academy, moreso state institutions in Red States?
@dpholmes
This thought contributes to gate keeping within the professoriate. This definitely doesn't help us increase diversity as well.
Lets chat about this Doug
@dpholmes
When teaching research methods, I spend majority of the time calming fears and building up confidence. Maybe I just need to add this as a course goal. 🤔
The yearly "HBCU owns THE Black experience" convo has started on social media again, at the detriment of Black students at PWIs.
Meanwhile, support/encourage HBCUs and also support the majority of Black students who DO NOT attend them. We are all family.
How did Harvard keeping it's President get wrapped in the conversation about DEI and merit? I swear folks hate us!!
It is 2024, let it go!
I'm from the rural south (born/raised). I get it, seeing Black people in positions of authority did not sit well with my town/community.
I played music in the beginning of class, as people entered Zoom. You could see the faces light up and people start grooving. It was the perfect start.
Faculty, we must be creative in this virtual space. I'm desperately trying to energize the crowd by any means!

if you know you are NOT the best fit or know someone else is better step aside. We will battle for months to come on if Gay hurt Black professionals in higher education.
Do POC community spaces take voice away from some more than others?
Who benefits mostly from POC spaces? (Those who are visually "Other" or those who can pass a white)
As time moves on, and recent events, I have so many questions.
Let's this be a reminder: Black scholars, professionals, leaders in historically white spaces take care of yourself!
Be Great!
Be Blessed!
Be on the lookout!!
Make sure it's all worth!!
@DrStevePerry
This field is dominated by women, so they shouldn't get penalized bc they chose teacher instead of another occupation. We can make a case about 6mth for many other occupations.
After birth, a women's priority should be her/newborn not work.

My first year as a faculty member has come to an end! No more meetings and finished grading. I'm also looking forward to a less congested Boston!
Summer work, let's geaux!
In the year 2020, I managed to squeek out one proposal "Trajectories of Doctoral Students in the Biological Sciences: A Hidden Markov Model Approach". I'm excited about this work. See you all at virtual

As I revamp my syllabi for online learning, I will incorporate COVID-19 into the discussions. I will add crisis management, disaster, and disruptions of higher education as well.
Our students are going to be distracted. I might as well dive in, Teachable moments.

I grew up in Tennessee close to Tina Tuners hometown. Tennesseans & the world loved her. I will always remember elders playing her music, & I really got to know her story via Angela Bassett. Although she denounced her US citizenship, we Tennesseans/Americans will mourn our own.
I don't understand

plz help me!
Why overuse "of color"?
Stop white washing experiences of people! If your institution/org holds a "People of Color" forum/event and all the speakers are black, call it what it is. This does not limit the reach of the convo.
How anxiety kicks in on Zoom:
1. Roll over in the morning (early afternoon) and log in
2. Large group meeting, name/stock photo up only
3. I decide to clean and fold clothes in the background
4. Facilitator splits us up into small groups😳
5. Everyone is visible
I know I'm thinking simple, but all America had to do was treat Kaepernick right and also follow science. I'm convinced we would be experiencing a different world right now.
When one of us climb up, we all do! We started this journey the same time. I laugh at how neither of us knew the future, but we would just push ahead. From our 1st AERA staying in a shake in an alley in San Fran to now. 😂😂

That's not my thinking, & trust my thoughts can't be boiled down in this space. I will always root for the success (mentally/physically) of Black people/families. I don't believe couples should stay together & cause harm. I can also feel sadness when Black families don't make it.
@zoraslovechild
This is important for many reasons. The strongest argument could be that most breakthrough STEM folks went to liberal arts focused institutions, especially for undergrad. A liberal arts education is needed for a good foundation of thought.
You all have to realize the anti-CRT/DEI folks blame American education for the flaws of our country! These actors believe we would be in a better place if we NEVER discussed race, inequality, and proposed ways to make whole historically disenfranchised population.
Past couple months I've seen other students and staff from institutions speak about signing some form of Covid-19 agreement.
It hits different when you get one in your own inbox on Friday night. I have questions and concerns, mixed with anxiety.
Accompanying email is a lot!
@DrStevePerry
My child currently has a retired certified teacher, bc her teacher is on maternity leave for the entire fall! I love this teacher she is amazing, and the teacher on leave finds time to check in.
Institutions should report different data here. Lumping non-tenure and tenure numbers together to show faculty diversity numbers gives a false since of commitment to the community and constitutes.
We’ve found that universities ‘lump’ tenure and non-tenure track faculty together for their diversity count. This is truly an elephant in the academy.

@Blackmillions_
I hurt for the young Black men who will see this and feel defined. Keep y'all head up, and understand not all spaces are for you. Many people in power will judge and reject you bc of choices out your control. It's ok, they don't deserve your greatness.
The past couple days exacerbated the two realities I live in.
Personal FB (family, friends, etc)
Kobe = adored and beloved
Academic Twitter
Kobe = complicated
This is just one 1 scenario, but happens often. Polictics, etc.
My heart is heavy for the Mitchell family.
@Fisk1866
has lost a giant. Dr. Mitchell was an amazing man and servant! Dr. Mitchell leaves behind an amazing legacy and wonderful family. One of his son's helped guide me and continues to be my corner

I can assure you as an academic Harvard's reputation is NOT in the crapper! The reputation of an institution is built on the research and scholarship of individuals NOT the president or a press release. Students choose schools based on access and rankings of departments.
Florida's State Board of Education has passed a rule to 'permanently prohibit' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on the 28 state college campuses
The board also replaced the course "Principles of Sociology" with a course in American History
Dr. Melissa Gilliam, a top official at The Ohio State University and a physician, will become Boston University’s next president, a historic appointment that gives the city’s largest university its first woman and first Black leader.
I treasured global online connections until a massive troll/bot attack yesterday. "Culture wars" have invaded higher ed, replacing debate with intimidation. I'm uncertain about Higher Ed's future, but we must engage beyond academia, or bad-faith actors will shape our narrative.
I don't know how to feel. On one hand, I'm hearing about colleagues being laid off or reassigned. The other, I'm seeing cash flow in to spaces like water.
Just a conflicting feeling.
Held my 1st online course with HEA/HESA students since COVID-19 stress started! All I can do is be there for students but its obvious they were tired, stressed, confused, & worried about multiple things out of my control!
Im thinking of all my colleagues in SA! We need you!
