The TV and film we consume seeps into our subconscious and shapes the way we think about the world — and what’s possible. What if there were more stories of regular people working together to solve problems and balance the scales?

This part of the Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin/Sally Field/Rita Moreno interview isn’t making the rounds probably because it’s not cute or uplifting or funny — but real. First of all I don’t think it’s uncommon to not have many friends left at 91. But her reticence is very relatable too

I mean this in all seriousness: We are in a moment where younger generations have a profound disconnect from pop culture that pre-dates them My theory is that much of it is the result of no longer casually absorbing info via radio/reruns/old movies airing on TV all the time

Oh no, then Ed Norton says a version of the “everybody here is an immigrant!” (and Gates concurs!) after he literally just learned that one of his ancestors is Native. This is such cognitive dissonance!

I think he makes some good points here. I'm also curious how much of "Behind the Candelabra's" $50 million budget was due to actor salaries. We're in a phase where big name actors are getting a disproportionate % of the budget of even midbudget movies.

These deals are extraordinarily unique. There's no standard contract they are bound to. Beyoncé & Swift have considerable leverage to negotiate whatever terms they see fit That's because exhibitors have been **struggling** and both concert films look like a sure box office bet

The Pentagon fails its 5th audit in a row. It only managed to account for 39% of its $3.5 trillion in assets “The U.S. military has the distinction of being the only U.S. government agency to have never passed a comprehensive audit” This is wild.

If streaming is going to resemble old school TV with ads and the ability to carry live (sports) programming … aren’t we mostly back where we started?

A consistent thing that happens whenever there’s reporting around this legitimately gross incident is that it mentions the party’s theme — “native and colonial” — then glides right by it as if THAT isn’t messed up too, so that everyone else is left off the hook but Harry

These social media skits are sort of a genre all their own (they always look staged to me!) but I’m curious about the psychological impact of living in a world where we are increasingly asked to determine if things (specifically AI generated words and images) are real or fake

It’s just this big gaping hole in the conversation whenever a guest can trace their roots back a few centuries on U.S. soil. So the one time they DO find a paper trail back to a famous Native person, there’s no in-depth conversation about that person’s life and circumstances.

I’m curious about this point specifically because the two big shows she’s been on recently — “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus” — are HBO shows not HBO Max (altho obviously you can stream them on HBO Max). Are premium cable wages better/same/worse than streaming?

Sydney Sweeney says she wouldn’t be able to afford a six-month break from acting: “I don’t have income to cover that. I don’t have someone supporting me… They don’t pay actors like they used to, and with streamers, you no longer get residuals,” 🔗:

This is one critique the show hadn’t really sorted through: I don’t know if it’s ever featured a Native guest? Maybe Gates and potential guests both agree that’s outside his lane of expertise. I just found this section to be so “oh by the way, fun fact!” in tone

By her 60s she wasn’t landing roles much and then got the script for a big Tony Scott Western. She read it, loved the role and then went to audition … and it all went downhill from there because they ~actually~ wanted her to play, in her words, a “Mexican whorehouse madam”

As an aside I will hate this phrasing: "HBO highlighted shows like Euphoria, Rap Sh!t, A Black Lady Sketch Show and Los Espookys, all of which are led by diverse characters." Stop using "diverse" to mean Black and Latinx people! Just say Black and Latinx people!

It’s tin-eared bc he then tells Julia Roberts (also a guest this week) that one side of her family was here “before America was America. You have a deep purchase on the United States of America.” The intimation is: This is a source of pride. The Indigenous are invisible I guess.

Anyway “Rap Sh!t” premieres this week in HBO Max and it’s also about the music industry and it is unabashedly from the female perspective … and it’s really good!

It's not that previous generations were more well-read ... I just think there were more opportunities to passively absorb info without even trying. It was in the air (literally radio and TV airwaves lol!) so there was an osmosis that doesn't happen the same way today

COLUMN: If you think the CGI on a Marvel movie isn’t up to snuff, don’t blame the VFX artists. Blame their terrible working conditions. Hollywood probably hopes audiences won't notice. But it's affecting livelihoods — and what we're seeing on screen.

This is a really odd takeaway! If the average CW viewer is indeed 58, that means people in that demo are seeking out the CW's current programming. Changing that to appeal to whatever some executive THINKS 58-year-olds wanna watch instead is ... kooky

Oscar-winning cinematographer & dir. Haskell Wexler made a documentary in 2006 called "Who Needs Sleep" about the dangers long work days present to ~everyone~ on set driving home If we're going to have this very good conversation about safety, it needs to be about crew as well
