Medical gaslighting is real. For two weeks, I’ve experienced numbness and tingling on my left side. It became so frightening that I went to the ER. They tried to convince me that I was just stressed and anxious. The nurse suggested that it could be radiation from cellphone use.

For added context, my spouse is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. The symptoms had been going on long enough that he wanted me to go to the ER on Friday (when my PCP originally suggested I go). I waited until early this AM. We’ve been monitoring my symptoms.

Before graduate school, I was super active and in the best shape of my life. As I progressed, I bought into the notion that being productive = "butt in chair." I slowly became sedentary as I leaned into a "booked and busy" academic identity. My body and health paid the price.

Keith Lee take that also applies to academics: Credentials mean little to the public if you’ve never attempted to democratize your expertise. You shouldn’t get mad when a “non-credentialed” person uses their lived experiences to reach an audience you likely overlooked anyway. 🤷🏾‍♀️

14 years ago today, I lost one of my childhood best friends roughly one week after she gave birth. After her passing, I spent 13 years being terribly afraid of pregnancy and childbirth because Black maternal mortality was more than just an issue I read about in news articles.

I've responded to overwork in academia by being super committed to and vocal about running my own race. Because my pace isn't dictated by other people's values and expectations, I don't feel compelled to keep up with anyone or encourage them to slow down. I simply "do me."

I took the top picture at a senior outing in 2008. I knew/had interacted with everyone in the pic except for the guy right next to me. Little did I know we'd link up years later, eventually get married, and both return to Vanderbilt as professors 15 years after graduating.⚓️

@RuchiSa09173990 Def be kind to yourself! I started by incorporating walking into my daily writing routine, especially when I felt stuck or frustrated. I often ended up needing to use the voice recorder on my phone because some of my best ideas emerged during a long walk.

I’ve dedicated an entire section of my acknowledgments to the unsung heroes of Harvard: administrative staff. I’m not sure how the university, faculty, or students would function w/o them. Their support often sustained me when I felt invisible and just completely over it. #PhDChat

As a senior, someone also told me I couldn’t get into Vandy bc of my high school’s reputation. After getting in but initially struggling, an advisor suggested that I explore other options because schools like Vandy aren’t for everyone. I’m now an incoming Vanderbilt professor. ⚓️

An advisor told me “I wouldn’t get into Vandy” and “I had too many reach schools” but I graduated as a Vandy top 20 senior. An advisor told me “to think of something else besides med school” and I’m a matched pediatrician. Message: trust your purpose, believe in yourself✊🏽

Considering how anxious academics can be, publicly bragging about productivity IS insensitive (depending on the context). However, I also don’t want to see folks with TT jobs or salaries asking “what’s wrong” with ppl who potentially can’t afford to fall apart. 6/7 #phdchat

After reflecting, the structure of my daily to-do list is really what keeps me balanced and on track. My day is broken into categories that I fill w/one activity max on most days. It helps me keep track of all my calendars and answer honestly when someone needs something from me.

How did I get 400hrs of focused work while life was lifing? My busiest months reflect how I fit in work around life. A few deadlines PUSHed me to "Prioritize Unexpended Scholarly Hours," but I got most of those hrs by finding 0.5-3 hrs here & there. Every little bit counts!

Being Black doesn't necessarily make you a DEI expert. It's disrespectful for orgs to task employees w/ anti-racist work just bc they're Black. It is often a distraction from their real work and undermines DEI professionals. Stop cutting corners & pay folks what they're worth.

There’s been a lot of talk about the difficulties of marriage. I agree that it requires work, but I can also say my life feels easier with and because of my partner. I still can’t believe it’s been 5 years since we ran away to NOLA and said “we do!” Happy Anniversary to us! ❤️
