As a trauma survivor, I look at this like my traumas: I will never recover, but I'm trying to be never the same in a way that helps others. It's the only way I can think to make meaning of it all.
I don't know how we are supposed to recover as humans from this. I'm still stuck hearing Hind's voice, half a little girl on a wall, babies decaying in incubators, children w/ half their heads missing. How do we as humans recover from this shame of letting this happen?
@vanna_llama__
@shereeny
*whispers* I'm a teacher and I super feel like that. I literally tell the kids things like: "you can do that but if they catch you, I don't know you."
@hqdada
One of my students apologized for being behind because they were the only one in their household besides their COVID-stricken parent, so they had to do all of the caretaking. That nearly broke me.
@misingnoglic
@clapifyoulikeme
@tashakaminsky
The trick is that in many states, like mine (Texas), if you strike as a teacher you can permanently lose your teacher certification. So we would have to have a critical mass of us striking in a given state, with the community supporting us, to not pay the penalty.
@helenaddy
Those and "____ sport team/tough dude gets absolutely bodied by a Pilates class" are two of my favorite genres. Seeing dude bros humbled by things just because the patriarchy says things women/femmes like are "weak" or "easy" brings me so much joy.
@girlziplocked
All of us teachers keep shaking our heads. Dress codes (which I think are BS) can't even work, so what makes admins think that much more invasive rules will be followed?!? These are kids (even the teens I teach), plus even adults can't seem to do what's right during COVID.
@DanielCTuttle
@hakan_geijer
This. I’ve been quivering on the edge of “Doomerism” anyway, or cosmic, philosophical pessimism really, but I keep trying to pull myself back into my desire to love. It’s just so hard because of this.
@wisemanlhs
@comrade_sock
In other words: "I have always been prepared to put myself between my students and a bullet; I am absolutely unwilling to be the gun."
@ruemcclammyhand
So he's the coworker that you'll be giving an interview about in a future true crime documentary. At least this is a nice change of pace from, "We had no idea! He was quiet & kept to himself."
@fortesalatifi
This was my exact experience. Since I was a little girl, I thought I was inherently bad. Really internalized it. Other trauma along the way had reinforced that feeling. Then my diagnosis/therapy helped me understand that what happened to me wasn't because of who I am as a person.
@mixedgrass666
I have those moments too, but then remember that most of those friend groups have 1+ awful, harmful members. While it's lonely at times due to having a small circle, I never have to (& never will) play nice with some r*pist everyone else is somehow OK being pals with.
@EmpireTotally
@AnaMardoll
I'm like your brother, and have no one but my cat, so I've got about a week and a half left in Texas. I've spent most of my 20s and 30s here, so it's so sad to leave, and for these reasons.
@laurenancona
As someone who's white & perceived as a woman, seeing other ww with their masks off (& being bullied by them for being fat/neurodivergent) has always been terrifying. Their knives are always close at hand to hurt you, but with a smile that never reaches their eyes.
@Yumi_Sparkles
It's more my goal gender than reality yet, but: Dolly Parton getting a COVID shot that she helped create through her charitable donations.
@hey_casandra
Thsnks for the important thread! My group wrote about this exact concern & tried to give people a schema to use to evaluate herbal claims:
@Ancommiey
@rechelon
As a high school teacher, this is why I love this generation. Gotta to try to figure out how to teach my students better opsec than this without some parent beating me up, though. 🤔
@emilykmay
As a high school teacher, I can say that teachers in general are like that but elementary teachers are *especially* like that. We should really run the world, but none of us would actually want that kind of power.
@jtrebach
My group wrote about this danger when the brief came out. Author Jinx Strange is a trained herbalist & he absolutely agrees that no herbal abortifacients are safe & misoprostol/mifepristone is the way to go.
@ChrisAlvino
@vvictorman_uel
Literally the same. I was 35 when I got the ADHD dx, we are starting to look at autism, & I just am gobsmacked how much neurodivergence colors my life.
@socialistdogmom
I'm a high school teacher who literally has been preparing to protect my students with no weapons and no official training. I don't want to hear a word from anyone about how this is beyond cops.
@IwriteOK
Some of my high school teachers saved my life. I'm about to start year 12 of my high school English teaching career. Trying to repay my debt to my teachers by being even better to my own students.
@IwriteOK
@AnActualProtato
What's worse, I leave behind all my LGBTQ students, who will be seniors in high school next year. I want to keep them safe, but I just can't stay here anymore.
@chenchenwrites
I thought I was the only one who felt like this. Might be my unique mix of inattentive ADHD/PTSD/anxiety disorders/trauma making me like the chaos, but it feels more comfortable than all the performance of "normal" I see on other platforms.
@LouisatheLast
I couldn't make it 30 seconds. I heard teacher's voice on the 911 call and thought of my students and my colleagues. I'm still trying not to cry thinking about it.
@helmsinki
If anyone suggests The Satanic Temple as an option, here's a thread of receipts as to why they are a terrible idea in context of reproductive justice (from Satanists, so it's not about religion):
A lot of desperate, anguished people will look at what Supreme Court is about to do on abortion and they will want to think there is a magic, clever solution to it
The Satanic Temple cannot help you get an abortion and it does not deserve your support.
For everyone wondering why so many of us are fed up with The Satanic Temple's attention-grabbing behavior in the TX abortion bill fight, here is a breakdown:
@IwriteOK
If I tried that with my cat, Jiji would slowly, laboriously explain to me how I'm not only trapped in the capitalist system, but also have to come home & clean up his shit. I think he wins?
@stevanzetti
@KeepDallasSafe
This is disgusting & borderline stalking by Ngo & his goons at Keep Dallas Safe. I hope that you & your girlfriend are coping as well as you can. There are a lot of us in Dallas who support & believe in your work.
@shirkering
Jenny Shimizu in the movie Foxfire (with hot futch era Angelina Jolie & adorable pre-music career Jenny Lewis) was literally my elder Millennial queer awakening.
And Jenny only keeps getting hotter (... actually, they all do. Interesting. 🤔)
@IwriteOK
As a public school teacher, I've never seen a dude with a gun make my students' lives significantly safer, but I teach mostly poor BIPOC kids. I'm trying to thwart the school-to-prison pipeline while the SRO eyes his gun because some kid was a smart-ass.
@cd_hooks
I'm a high school teacher, & I force myself to imagine things like gouging a shooter's eyes out. I hope it will help me be ready to try doing it if a shooting ever happens. So my students might be able to survive. I'm just trained in English, yet I plan to try.
@eeberquist
My neurodivergence = I can't stand the sensation of leather like that, but I want a velvet-y or whatever tf polyester this recliner was so bad.
@fatfabfeminist
The most healing thing I have ever done is give myself love in all the ways that I received bullying & abuse as a kid. I refuse to ever again say to my inner self the horrible language I received in the past, no matter how my body (or any other part of me) changes.
@IwriteOK
Oh boy. Speaking as a high school teacher who has pretty much accepted cell phones in the classroom, banning TikTok is going to cause an uprising he cannot comprehend. And I'm only slightly kidding.
@senorhettler
I've taught in TX for 9 yrs. After the pandemic, personal experiences w/anti-LGBTQ/CRT hate, Greg Abbott, SB8, etc., I'm totally broken. Leaving this state in 7 weeks & never coming back. Probably leaving the profession when I can afford to. All I ever wanted to do is teach.😔
@Pinko69420
When I taught in a 🔴 state, I would just stand quietly (to avoid attention on me not saying the pledge) & ask the my students to be quiet (ostensibly for "respect.") I also never required anyone to stand/say the pledge. I couldn't morally bring myself to enforce it.
@itsJODONNA

^this. Had bad depressive episode earlier this year & had the urge to watch gore videos like I did in my edgy, super-depressed teen years. My therapist, who is a badass & has worked with me for years, asked me: "Did you ever think that you might be using it to self-harm?"😬
@scifichick25
@SxarletRed
Veterans being treated with impunity to do these things is also exactly what led to both the KKK (Confederate calvary vets) & the Sturmabteilung, aka the "Brownshirts" who ushered Hitler into power. They started as a gang of WW1-veteran vigilantes.
@vinn_ayy
Here's some casserole made with a cream of something soup and an odd crunchy topping to welcome you to whiteness. You can just mail the dish back to me as my address is on the bottom.
"Those of us who did not die must prepare to take our individual grief out into the world, find our place in communal mourning & nurturing & whisper to each other’s hearts 'We know you’re strong. Look at what you survived. You can be soft here, we’ve got you.'"
@Ruth_Mensch
I was both horrified for the Iraqi people & terrified for all my friends who joined up to escape our poor small town as soon as they graduated high school. I've never forgotten the dread & helplessness I felt.
@BasicBitching
Such a great thread! As a fat activist, I also see that fatness (to any degree) leads to being deemed "less feminine." That's why I think a lot of fat women & femmes feel pressure to be super femme-presenting. Intersect that with race, ability, etc, & you get this toxic brew.
@heymrsbond
As much as I love our vocation, so much of teaching involves enduring constant moral injuries. The way our society allows kids to be sickened with COVID in schools that act as vectors, all to keep capitalism running, is particularly hard on my soul.
@facebookvillain
According to Loudwire: "There are plenty of other symbolic nods throughout the video, including 'The Great Awakening' flashing during a newscast, which is a reference to QAnon." So that's great. 😒 "Cvlt" metal become death cult of stupidity metal.

I'm a Texas teacher, & literally have had multiple friends beg me to quit & offer to support me until I figured something else out. It's that terrifying to them. I don't want to leave my students, so I'm instead pre-buying a cremation, setting up a power-of-attorney, etc.
@RiotLinguist
I joined the IRL bdsm/Leather community around 22, but wasn't super online with it back then. So, seeing things like Kinktok & Twitter kink circles has been confusing to me. Some of these folks violate the most basic ethical tenets that were drilled into me. It's bizzaro world.
@Pinko69420
God, the dental work I need... should have researched the best place to get dental care across the border & gone to Mexico for it when I lived in TX. It still might be cheaper to go to Mexico for dental care even with me flying from the upper Midwest blue state I'm in now.
@PeshAhumuza
Some of the only animals who prey on others are ape/primate relatives of ours (baboons, chimps, etc .) Fun fact: When a bunch of aggressive male baboons got TB & died, the females raised the current babies, & the next generation came in better. Hmm. 🤔
@alyssanoellev
I absolutely love the content of the AP class I teach, but I'm extremely bothered by the systemic inequalities of the program, and how even educators at the campus level are unwilling to address them due to the "prestige" of AP.
@evangelainy
I'm still not okay after Skinamarink (I watched a lot of the same cartoons in my tiny mobile home during my abusive childhood.) Been putting off ISTTG because I'm afraid there's an 🥚inside me that I didn't know about that it's going to break.
@maiamindel
I'm a leftist Satanist, but the amount of stories I've heard like this has given me such a huge soft spot for Judiasm. Might be the English teacher in me, or that my religion is mostly just spooky nerds, with our theological disagreements firing up like niche Reddit threads.
@Jezebel
Thank you so much for this article. So many more people need to realize how problematic TST is in the reproductive rights context. TL;DR advice: Don't donate to the satanic temple; donate to your local abortion funds instead. Start searching here:
