Nosterfield Local Nature Reserve - one of North Yorkshire's premier wet grassland reserves, former quarry; owned and managed by Lower Ure Conservation Trust.
The churchyard at St John's, Sharow
@SharowSt
North Yorkshire, looking stunning today. Thirty years of hay cutting and CRUCIALLY all cutting removed - it really works! ☘️🌼🐝🐞🦋
#wildflowerhour
Today is WORLD CURLEW DAY! Breeding populations of this remarkable bird have declined rapidly in recent years, largely due to human activity. Help us spread the love for curlews today! If you have any photos or artworks featuring curlew, please share them with us!!📸🎨📽️
We have lost 98% of traditional hay meadows nationally but 30 years of sensitive ''hay' management has brought St. John's, Sharow back to prime condition. It can be done, where there is a will and support!

LOWER TURNING CIRCLE/CAR VIEWING AREA CLOSED
Recent disturbance of protected breeding bird species, by irresponsible photographers, has caused us to close the car viewing area. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes but trust you will understand.
It is difficult to think of words to describe a
#paraglider
pilot who circles a few times and then thinks this looks like a great place to land . . . . .and then lies down in the grass. . . .
That’s a wrap! 816 species recorded in 24 hours, records smashed, team exhausted, profile raised and a fantastic day learning all about our humble nature reserve.
More records to come so stay in touch for more and thanks to
@ChrisGPackham
and team for helping us this morning.
Ospreys, ospreys, ospreys - what a golden patch we have had recently!
The crowning glory is a visit from a Lake District ringed bird - Blue 281. A female ringed at Roudsea Wood, near Ulverston in 2018. Many thanks to

How does a small dedicated nature conservation charity propagate ten of thousands of carbon-storing wetland plants in 100% peat-free compost and plant with >95% establishing . . . Whilst a large 'professional' government organisation continues to fail to move to peat free? 🤔🤔🤔
Great news that the two southern Thornborough Henges are now under the care of
@EnglishHeritage
. We are really looking forward to working with the great EH team to help restore and take these wonderful ancient monuments to a brighter future!
Really looking forward to seeing the roadside verge next summer on Moor Lane, between Snape and Thornton Watlass - a hint of how the historical Watlass Moor would have once looked, in all its glory. Great restoration work by our brilliant volunteers! 🌼🌹🦋👏👏👏
HUGE THANKS to the terrific
@Northpowergrid
team for installing bird-diverters on the power lines at the northern end of the nature reserve and adjoining arable field. They could not have been more helpful - a terrific service. 👏👏👏

. . . . 30 years ago this churchyard was mown like a messy (uncollected cuttings) bowling green.
Today a truly species-rich grassland. SOLUTION - allow a few mown (and collected) paths to demonstrate to cynics that it is cared for - it works!
Just received confirmation that the White-tailed Eagle spotted by the brilliant

White Tailed Sea Eagle over Nosterfield this morning, a new bird for the reserve and long overdue. It certainly upset the local Buzzards.
Dozens of lapwing chicks across the reserve now. It's great to have the support of
@EDRInging
to ring a few, where we can access them without undue disturbance. Where will they go from here?!
Thanks to everyone who joined our community day today to help us fill sandbags with lesser reedmace. These will be planted out in the fen when they've rooted through, hopefully in a few weeks.
A massive 137 bags were made up - a new Nosterfield record! 🥇🥳
The sun was out for our first Fen Creation workshops at Nosterfield Quarry today 🌞. Great to share our experiences from the last 5 years with others. We hope we've inspired a few new wetland projects! Thank you to all who participated. Generously supported by

Glow-worm reintroduction, thanks to amazing and enthusiastic
@PeteMRCooper
, results after >25 year of searching for them at Nosterfield.
Edmund Bogg, in one of his travel books (c.1899) stated that the Nosterfield hedgerows "were alight with the fairy lanterns of the glow-worm"
Today I’ve been very proud to have released 480 Glow-worm larvae I’ve reared this summer to Nosterfield Nature Reserve in Yorkshire!
Here’s a bit about the project 🧵
First (we think) 100% proven record of dark green fritillary at the reserve, despite quite a few 'almost certain', flying past at great speed!!! Well done
@TimScot78560883
@BC_Yorkshire
We did it!! Another brilliant effort by a lovely group of volunteers today clearing ALL the remaining tree guards around kiln lake. Many thanks for all your efforts! 👌🤗
Our wonderful volunteers braved the rain today to re-plant areas of the Middle Henge at Thornborough.
Fragments of turf containing calcareous grassland species had been removed from the Henge & looked after in our plant nursery while restoration work took place.
@EnglishHeritage
Of course we picked the busiest day of the year so far to finish filling the holes in the car park.. but after playing a bit of car Tetris with the (very accomodating) visitors, we got it done. Many thanks to our volunteers for their hard graft today! 🙏
It is really exciting to work with
@EnglishHeritage
to help enhance the Thornborough Henges. This offers LUCT the chance to work in partnership at a landscape-scale, to restore local provenance flora in this rich historical setting.

about taking down this awful netting. It is a death trap for wildlife.
No matter how well they think it's fitted it deteriorates & becomes a danger. They've had all Autumn & Winter to remove hedge, the planning of this project is not good enough.
Thanks to those who turned out on Saturday for our latest Community Work Day!
Had a great morning building fish refuges from last years willow coppice. They'll be sunk into waterbodies on the quarry site in a few weeks, creating hiding places for small fish🐟.
@HeritageFundUK
Great to see that
@NewcastleCC
see Kittiwakes as a key part of their city's heritage. Their principal engineer sees the 1,200 breeding pairs on the wonderful Tyne Bridge as "part of the quayside".
What went so wrong at Scarborough?

Reedbed refurbishment work has gone really well but now time for the excavator to head off to
@GarganeyTrust
Broomhill to do more great work. He will be back in the autumn, to do more great work! In the .meantime, many thanks Paul!
Having been flooded out last autumn, machines are back in the reedbed to (hopefully!) complete the major reedbed restoration - opening out pools and ditches. Sorry about the short-term disturbance . . . snipe seem to be enjoying the exposed mud!
@nybirdnews
Can you rake three quarters of a neolithic henge in one day?...
You can with this team!!
Great turn out and phenomenal effort from our volunteers today

This work will help to restore the rare limestone grassland on the Thornborough Henges 🌱

HAPPY YELLOWLEGS ANNIVERSARY!

More planting taking place around the edges of our reedbed to increase plant biodiversity. Adding Tufted Sedge, Bladder Sedge, Great Fen Sedge & Water Dock amongst others 🌱.
We've also extended the straw bale barrier behind the fen planting to reduce silt encroachment ✋️🚫😊.
Welcome Emma!
We are delighted that Emma Higgs is joining us next week, to promote the work of our charity throughout the region. Her particular expertise will be supporting and building our terrific volunteer base and enthusing others about our wildlife
We're asking local naturalists to look out for magnesian limestone grassland in the area between Knaresborough & Catterick. Outside a few well-known nature reserves, small remnants go un-recorded on road verges, green lanes and churchyards. Info:
In 2018, we began creating fen habitat on a lake shore formed by gravel extraction at Nosterfield Quarry.
On Fri 26th May, we'll be hosting a free workshop to share our findings with those interested in wetland creation.

! So what better time to say a huge THANK YOU 👏👏👏 to our wonderful volunteers! Without you, Nosterfield NR simply wouldn't be what it is. The skills, knowledge, passion & commitment brought by every one of you is both extraordinary & invaluable 🤩🥳
Our new sluice is now up and running on the reedbed, enabling us to start some serious reed cutting in early 2019. Thousands of starlings going to roost and quite a few water rail calling.
📣We’re pleased to announce a new flagship project, made possible with funding from

Just 25 years ago it was freshly deposited silt and five years ago smothered in orchid spikes; recently is has started to become more rank. The sheep will help keep a shorter award, aiding species like dingy skipper.🦋
Great turn out for our
