Dear @BBCNews could you please stop saying how pleased we all are with continuing dry, sunny & hot weather? Our rivers & wetlands are dying & wildlife fading away. We need RAIN. It is good. You can’t make the weather, but please stop saying global heating is a positive thing.

Science is very clear. It’s not net zero in 2050 that must be the headline goal, but cutting emissions before then, including 50% cut by 2030. Delaying action deepens peril for our children & grandchildren. Think Libya, Greece, mass migration & all the rest, & on a massive scale.

Seems very odd not to be sending The King to COP27. He is not only regarded as one the most credible climate leaders in the UK, but also globally. Hard to think of what the reason might be not to make the most of our most valuable diplomatic asset on the most important question.

“It’s not the right occasion for the King to attend COP” doesn’t make sense. The occasion is happening. Does it mean he shouldn’t attend COPs at all? Or COP is at the wrong time for him to attend? I think they’re embarrassed his leadership will be at odds with their lack of it.

Here is the kind of climate change feedback that was being warned about two decades & more ago. High temperature, permafrost melt, peat & trees burning with black carbon fallout hastening ice melt, all causing more warming. ‘Emergency’ does seem right word

Why is the choice posed always food versus Nature? People can’t eat grass, yet we have about 125,000 hectares under golf courses. Generally don’t eat horses, but we spare about 500,000 hectares to feed them. For scale, Birmingham is about 26,000 hectares.

As customers enter the Waitrose store at Kings Cross, these are the first products to catch the eye. With the on-going global collapse of invertebrate populations signalling terrifying ecological change, perhaps time to review whether it is right to promote such product lines?

Delighted a few weeks ago to visit a location in southern England where in a nest in an ancient oak was the first young White-tailed Eagle in this country for 243 years. Great to see such results from partnership for reintroduction licensed by @NaturalEngland It’s fledged now.

An interesting piece from @WilliamJHague . Government targets, policies & laws on Nature & environment have over recent years been pretty good & widely welcomed. I’m looking forward to helping advise how to keep & improve on all that as economic development plans unfold.

Goodness me. Both main points wrong. Not 2k unless you choose that, & with renewables outstripping gas on low price in many places that seems to be exactly the venue to help meet cost of living challenges. Perhaps we are living in parallel universes? I wonder which one is real?

Goodness me. More awareness needed @nationaltrust at Blakeney Marsh National Nature Reserve. People wandering off paths, nesting Redshank flushing in all directions, including with this man walking into the marsh with his dog off lead!

Best wishes @RishiSunak for your coming work in meeting the many challenges that face us in these difficult times. @NaturalEngland we are all set to help navigate a path to a beautiful & vibrant environment that supports a healthy economy. If we trash Nature we trash society.

It’s #WorldSoilDay so I wrote a blog for @wwf @wwf_uk to remind us all of how the ‘dirt’ sustains our civilisation. A good day to remember to #Connect2Earth , because that’s where our food & water comes from

The announcement today from @10DowningStreet of a net zero emissions goal enshrined in law is a big positive step. @NaturalEngland we look forward to helping with the net goal via Nature recovery, including in soils, forests, wetlands and coastal habitats.

There is a lot of emphasis these days on PLANTING trees. Here’s a nice little video from @KneppSafaris to remind us that alongside putting saplings into tubes there is another approach, & it is rocket fuel for wildlife

Since the start of my work in conservation in 1984, farm policy & agricultural subsidies have been among the biggest issues. Today’s announcement on two new agri-environment schemes is a major landmark. @NaturalEngland looks forward to working with these

Thank goodness for King Charles. Considering the deep peril faced by people & Nature it’s encouraging that at least one world leader is articulating a fit for purpose perspective. His words galvanised action in Paris in 2015 & hopefully will again now.

We humans are embedded in Earth’s unique web of life as much as the butterflies & birds. Trouble is that we too often lose sight of this basic fact, & then we degrade Nature in ways that might undermine our health, wealth & security. Good news is that it’s not too late to act

I’ve reached the view that if we succeed in getting soil health & water quality right, then much of what else we need to do for the environment naturally follows, including for carbon, wildlife & human well-being. This is why we must transition from soil decline to soil recovery.

"Healthy soils with a high proportion of organic matter hold far more water than soils that have been damaged or depleted by agriculture & that matter is also a massive carbon store. By improving & protecting soil health we can thus meet multiple objectives" Bravo @TonyJuniper !

New woods around towns & cities would be an excellent focus. Could use to reconnect existing wood fragments & plan in cycle & walking routes to urban areas. We should have natural regeneration component as well as planting. Might help combat disease that way & increase wildlife.

Government has a pledge to plant 30 m trees on 75,000 acres each year by 2025. Skating over the fact that Govs don’t plant trees, incentivised land managers do, it’s a noble ambition. Idea: plant them on greenbelt. Popular with town dwellers and good for air quality and access

@Cambridge_Uni @Daisybelll @ChrisGPackham @Natures_Voice @birdman1066 Would be good to hire an ecologist. The University is an institution that must be a leader for conservation, not only via research but also action across its own estate. Plenty of people would be willing to help, including me, as a #Cambridge resident & Fellow @cisl_cambridge
