Look, Incredibles 2 is not better than the first, we all know that. But this is just wrong. Bird's kinetic action is one of his most remarkable attributes, and there's multiple exemplary sequences in I2. This is pure mastery on display. Enough with these exaggerations!!

It makes it 10x sadder knowing that there is not a single scene in the Incredibles 2 that is remotely close to being as good as a single scene from the first one

Bird refused to do another Incredibles until he found the right story to tell, which is an admirable move. The structural perfection of the first Incredibles is nigh-impossible to recapture, that's known. Nonetheless, he's really flexing his total skill with animation here

Just watch how the camera moves! The animation advancements have really allowed him to stretch himself - literally and metaphorically - to accomplish kinetic visual feats that live-action superhero films have lacked for decades now; the creativity, the flow of the action

We've got to abandon this toxic expectation that a sequel HAS to surpass it's original. Or that if it fails to live up to that perfection, it's somehow inferior and thus dismissed. Don't let a bunch of whiney YouTubers with 10 hour videos dull your mind. Watch, and pay attention!

I still have yet to really come to any sort of meaningful conclusion on the various ideas that Bird is juggling through I2. It's a heavy film, thematically speaking, that nobody really seems to have fully have sorted out for themselves. Even then, the film still works well.

@azdaminato It's true that there's a less personal thing at stake here, thus the lesser emotional punch. But there's plenty throughout I2 with a similar threat level (house invasion, the boat fight). I only chose this as a broad demonstration that the film still is plenty intense and urgent

@FullFatVideos I agree. The pre-title cold opening shows us that we're not seeing everything as it should be (she 'dies' in the desert but, nah, she's fine actuallu) and the lack of any sort of grieving from Hunt is odd especially when every other emotional bit in the film is fairly sustained

Excited for Butler in anything but... eugh, Aronofsky. Let me guess: the protagonist is going to be pushed to their physical and psychological limits to such a point that it results in a psuedo-transcendence. You know, like in basically every Aronofsky film ever made? Barf.
