Our paper (w/ @amitbasole ) on the comparability of CPHS and PLFS labour income numbers is now out! We find through diff methods, assmptions, rural/urban locations & demographic groups, that CPHS mean monthly labour earnings are ~5-50% higher than the corresponding PLFS estimates.

Attached is the published article. Few other imp point that got cut: For every 10,000 people, India has 14 hospital beds and 23 healthcare workers. In contrast, the global average is 29 hospital beds and the WHO norms are 44 healthcare workers per 10,000 people.

Own-account workers constitute the largest chunk of the employed, while the sharpest increase in employment over the period comes from those employed as unpaid family labour. Neither of these two subcategories of self-employment form aspirational jobs! (3/5)

Further, real earnings of the self-employed at best stagnated, & for some actually fell over this period. Together, these demonstrate worrying signs about the nature of jobs that are absorbing vast majority of Indian masses. (4/5)

Comparing long-term trends, 2017-18 to 2021-22 comes out as the "best" phase with the highest increase in overall employment. Aggregates naturally hide more than they reveal. Rising number of employed comes along with a worsening overall quality of employment. (2/5)
