New *open access* paper (and one w a personal connection): capitalist firms devalue the labours of social reproduction by “exporting” it to gendered households & the state. But what do petty commodity producers, who embody both capital and labour, do?

It's the last day of @hetecon 's #AHE2023 , and @srishting presents on gender in petty commodity production. Feminist economics show that reproductive labor is pushed out of productive units onto households. However, PCP happens in the household, so patriarchy has to get creative.

Great piece by Damodaran. I’d only add that rise in agri labour wages (which is undoubtedly evident in most places) can take place with reduced hiring (due to mechanisation) and so not necessarily imply improved standard of living for agri labourers.

Many concerns about the 2022-23 budget (is this really the time for purely supply side measures and strict adherence to fiscal deficit containment, etc) but I have to say, taxing crypto is a good thing.

What is the worst sweet in Indian history and why is it Besan laddoo? Absolute horrible thing. Sawdust formed into balls with some kind of quicksand.

I love @SonaldeDesai ’s threads because they reveal the messiness of field-based data collection and the fuzzy boundaries of empirical categories.

1. “What is a household?” A constant debate at each interviewer training. Formal definition of people living under the same roof and eating from the same kitchen for at least 6 of the prior 12 months does not cut it with our interviewers.

Whenever I see an academic lauded for publishing '500 papers' (or whatever), these days my mind turns to all the colleagues who sucked up teaching and admin so that the chosen one could focus on research. They own those papers.

Excellent rebuttal to T. Roy’s dogged defence of British Raj by my colleague Tamoghna Halder. Those interested in economic history, colonialism, and a good showdown, give this a read.

NEW POST: Prof @RoyHistory1 has recently sought to destroy claims that British colonial policies caused famines in India. Tamoghna Halder fact checks each of Roy's points, finds multiple mistakes. Roy's defense of colonialism seems to be on shaky ground.

Idk who needs to hear this but having a (grossly underpaid, lower caste, possibly immigrant) maid/nanny do the bulk of household social reproduction so the woman of the house can do a job/run a business and be financially independent is not going to dismantle the patriarchy.

At the New School, two visions are colliding: one of its student body and faculty who want to keep true to the university's progressive history, and the other of its administration, who want to trim it down to only those parts which pay the most.

What does Taliban mean? It is a plural of Talib, which means student. We have lakhs of madarsa students in India, i.e. Taliban, the Indian Taliban, supported by Panchmakkars. They also have the same DNA. So, what do we intend to do next?

I see a lot of tweets pointing out how these are the very people who ‘run the world’ & so it’s bizarre that they need luck. Are they though (running the world)? Can they really take unilateral decisions antithetical to the interests of capital and get away with it?

Can India become another Sri Lanka where an economic meltdown triggers a mass insurrection against the regime? Such fantasies are best described by using the metaphor of Samuel Beckett’s 1953 play Waiting for Godot. This week’s Terms of Trade
