1. “What is a household?” A constant debate at each interviewer training. Formal definition of people living under the same roof and eating from the same kitchen for at least 6 of the prior 12 months does not cut it with our interviewers.
For much of my life, I was a mother of sons; outnumbered by men in my family. Sex-ratio in our family flipped once our son realized he was born with the wrong gender. With Naomi, her spouse Rachel and daughter Leni, it is women 4: men 2 in our family. 💕 you & proud of you Naomi
Why is Indian Census not being conducted this year, post COVID? As a data geek, I can happily chant we need data. But mainly teachers are on Census duty and India has had one of the longest school closures. What takes priority? Separate pool of enumerators possible?
1/8 Panic in IHDS war room! Interviewer calls in, “Seema” an unmarried woman of age 47 is to be asked marriage/fertility questions according to the computer program. But single women are not to be asked these questions. What to do?

@NCAER
is looking for several post-docs, including 1 for IHDS (based in Delhi). Unique opportunity to work with IHDS-3 data as it is being collected.
Many respondents for IHDS-3 (now in field) remember interviewers visiting them in prior round. We send New Year's card with a small calendar to thank respondents for sharing their lives with us. As one interviewer writes, "IHDS KA NEW YEAR CARD BHI 1 GHAR PAR MILA HAI" 👋
Just adding to the discussion, an article on Global Hunger Index and nutrition policy I wrote in
@IndianExpress
. Debates on this flawed index take attention away from very real need to improve nutrition and reduce child mortality
In June this year
@BBCMoreOrLess
got in touch with me about hunger data in India and we looked at the Global Hunger Index for it. As with all of Indian data, the index should be more carefully looked at and needs better reporting. The episode is here
@rglenner
My pet peeve is submitting an article on India and being asked to draw out implications for generalizability to other contexts. No one writing on the US is asked to do this. Indian population=4xUS population ??
Computers can't keep up with life! Household roster generated yesterday, respondent gave birth in the night and is eager to participate in the survey now (huh!!). Serious juggad needed to count the newborn. I am going to send a personal gift to this IHDS baby 🎂

5. My latest answer, home is just a place. Family is a matter of love and tradition. “Kutumba” is part of our culture and includes everyone. But survey is about residence or “Nivasa” – certainly lesser than family, but our families are so vast, no? How can we count them all?
If universities are to remain home to creativity, they must embrace radical thinking and skepticism toward received wisdom and learn to deal with the discomfort they bring. Recent controversies at US campuses show that the space for dissent is rapidly shrinking.
@IndianExpress
7/8 If you use IHDS data and find inconsistencies across time (and I assure you, you will), please accept that at least some of it come from a world that is messy and full of twist and turns that lives take. Some we will be able to document, some we will only guess at.
I don’t get the new fad of treating nightlights data as a measure of economic development. Few factories turn on lights at night but families do. So is it population growth/density or economic growth?
Someone just plagiarized this newspaper article in another publication, even copied a mistake I soon corrected. Yo, people noticed the paraphrasing and sent it to me. Not calling you out but don't do it again
My latest survey, ask every guard in office buildings in Delhi if their thermal scans found a single case of high fever. None have. Either COVID/flu/fever have vanished from Delhi, or scanners don’t work, or most likely scanning wrists instead of foreheads is ineffective
Gaps between conceptual understanding of gender empowerment and its quantitative measurement. How can survey research keep up with the sophistication of feminist thinking? a paper with Feinian Chen, Shilpa Reddy and Amy McLaughlin
Success has its own challenge. With TFR of 2 India is now at replacement level fertility but it is hard to change a mindset shaped by fears of population bomb. An op-ed on need for new thinking to deal with new challenges in .

1. IHDS Rajasthan women respondents and I became a mutual sympathy society. I felt sympathy for their lack of independence in physical mobility. They openly sympathized that I had no father or brother to protect me.

A great paper by Nidhi Sabharwal finds that Indian male academics attend conferences at a far greater rate than women academics. Could this have anything to do with care responsibilities and lack of childcare at conferences?
2. What about husband who lives in Bangalore and supports his wife and children in Mysore (3 hours away)? Not a household member, says IHDS definition. But he comes home every weekend and makes all the decisions says the interviewer.

Amazing difference in how male and female interviewers view fieldwork. For most men it’s a way of making a living while waiting for a better jobs, for women it’s often an adventure. Sharing the excitement of two women interviewers from IHDS.. with gratitude for their hard work

8/8 Seema was not interviewed and her interview status was coded as 6007 “Non Interview, other reasons”. I suspect we will end up with many such untold stories hiding under code 6007.

One of the few papers that has made me truly reflect. This is about race & class in the US. But India may have its equivalent in people taking civil service exams. Can anyone guide me to studies on who succeeds in civil service exams?
I guess men have no role in childbearing and their age does not matter 🤣 Seriously, can’t we let people make decisions on whether to have a child and when and just put family friendly policies (e.g. good childcare and public education) in place to support all families?

Current generation of Indian parent face a squeeze. Investments in children -often a single child- have risen. But fewer children and rising migration means fewer caregivers when they age. Land/propery sales will need to be simplified as these parents try to finance old age.

It may be time to think about what we want and need to measure before starting out collecting data. Women’s employment is a classic example. Does subsistence farming count as work?
