Beginning today I will be writing a weekly column for HT Premium which will look at a political economy puzzle facing contemporary India. We've named it Terms of Trade. The first one asks why fuel price protests aren't gaining popular traction

Who likes JNU students marching on Delhi roads depends on who’s in power. In 2012 the BJP loved JNU students when they braved tear gas & lathis during Nirbhaya. Today their govt doesn’t want them to march in Delhi. The average JNU student was & is only fighting for a just cause.

The problem with Modiji’s cloud cover will help us evade radars isn’t that he doesn’t know how radars work. It’s the fact that nobody in that room, service chiefs included, pointed out he was wrong. The only reason can be they didn’t want to contradict him in person.

I can imagine how much tantrums the child must have thrown for a cycle that parents are getting it on the second day of unlock. Child will be happy and shopkeeper grateful for the fact that people are still buying

Comrade Yechury's enigma was that his personal stock didn't diminish despite CPI(M)'s decline under his GS-ship. What didn't change was his constant solidarity with his alma mater. Future generations of JNU students will always miss him at the barricades. Travel well comrade…

Yesterday’s treatment of JNU students is proof that we are living in an age where ideological differences in places of learning will be crushed with brute force, and the state at best will remain a bystander. I write against the attack on my alma mater

“If we don’t have good teachers, we can’t have good students”, Prof Abhijit Banerjee told me in a wide-ranging interview for @htTweets yesterday. We talked about economic slowdown, liberalism, RCTs and much more. You can read it here

UP reversals for BJP are due to opposition unity. But Bihar results show the RJD is winning even against a united NDA. This should worry the BJP even more. Cracks in BJP's rainbow Hindu consolidation rather than overnight changes in secular-communal divide is the key #bypoll

India's tax burden shifted from board-rooms to petrol-pumps during the pandemic. We highlight the regressive turn in India's tax-policy at a time when inequality and poverty have risen sharply even as corporate profits have risen cc @Vinsac

Just finished rereading the chapter on Migration from the 2016-17 Eco Survey when @arvindsubraman was the CEA. It uses various methods including analysis of unreserved railway travel to argue that extant figures on no. of migrants in India were gross underestimates. 1/n

This was posted on a day when India reported its worst GDP growth figures in 11 years. Mr Sanyal is one of the key economic advisors to the govt of India.

One signs of a self confident country, is that it's "intellectual" class is confident enough to comment on the rest of the world from its own perspective, and do so in even when it is not directly involved in any way 1/n

When the first citizen of the country, just after she has assumed office, says Johar to wish the legislature and the nation at large from the central hall of the parliament, it is indeed a proud milestone in the road of dialectics of democracy for our country.

The power of cooperatives. They can justify a price rise in the interest of their stakeholders. I wish vegetable growers had something like Amul too.

A short thread on a reality in Bihar politics which a lot of anti-BJP people outside the state do not understand. (Like most Indian states) the NDA's political success is not just a communal-secular binary in the state (1/n)

Speaks volumes about the job market in India. MBA plus 2 year FMCG experience can earn you a maximum of 15k per month. Underlines why we should look at earnings rather than job numbers.
