On the Eve of Back to School my first blog in 2.5 years!
An update on my work into recall practice.
Thanks as always to
@Corbettmaths
for his resources and to
@AceThatTest
@mrbartonmaths
among others for the inspiration!
New style “my turn, your turn” post-mock feedback exercise for year 11. Based on questions that were answered poorly across the whole class that should have been nailed!
Weaknesses from yr 11 mock papers have been fed into my recall map. Meaning they will be appear on low stakes recall quizzes on at least 3 occasions in the coming weeks. Have also identified topics where re-teaching may be needed.(They have been identified previously as weakness)
Continuing the use of algebra tiles to introduce solving two-step equations with low ability year 7 this morning. This is off the back of CPAL training day with
@EmathsUK
. Blog coming soon on the use of algebra tiles as their progress has been PHENOMENAL!
If your haven’t already read this book, you must! Even for someone like me who thought they “knew” Rosenshine’s principles. Well I know a lot more now!! Time well spent today! 😁📚
@teacherhead
. Thanks for loaning
@lizzy_francis
Absolutely over the moon to have been appointed as Assistant Headteacher at Meols Cop from January 2024. The most fantastic way to celebrate 10 years at our truly amazing school ❤️

graduation. Big thanks to
@mrbartonmaths
for the idea of confidence scoring in low stakes recall quizzes. Will look forward to getting my my Research Lead hat back on next year 😁👍🏻
I think this is my new favourite
@NCETM
#Checkpoint
. We discussed today at
@NWmathshub3
Which one students would find easier to do and why? …Do we put enough emphasis on the multiplicative relationship between numerator and denominator when teaching equivalent fractions?
After an extremely nervous day of waiting, results are in and I have passed the pilot programme!! I will be officially awarded chartered teacher status at graduation in July!! 😃🍾
#cteach
Good luck to everyone receiving their Chartered Teacher results today.🤞
We're looking forward to celebrating your results at the graduation in July!

Collating together all uses of Worked Examples as a dept. NEW for this year was worked egs with HW. We use Mathsprint to design 5 homeworks each 1/2 term based on 20 retrieval qs . Provide "perfect" answers to support. Parents find this useful when supporting with HW as well.
Low stakes Recall quizzes for year 8 in the making. We’ve put a lot of work over the past couple of years into retrieval practice for KS4. This year is all about making recall in KS3 more effective 🤞🏻
Trying to build habits and resilience with my year 10 foundation class on completion of HW independently by giving them a modelled answer to work from, they complete part b themselves as homework. We are trialling a practice one in class today to model the process.
Wow, thank you to
@mathsjem
for a FANTASTIC 40 mins of CPD This morning. You have inspired me. My target for dept meetings next year: Less time on admin, more time on TALKING MATHS and DOING MATHS!!! This is crucial to developing mathematical pedagogy.
Rediscovered my love for
@Socrative
quizzing.
Couple of advantages over use of forms:
1. Can see if students have started instantly.
2. Can give live feedback on each response as students progress through.
Very easy to see common misconceptions and then to feedback to the class.
Using a
@getdiagnostics
diagnostic question and this morning with year 11. Great way to check responses of all students on live lessons. Thanks as always to
@mrbartonmaths
, a resource that I use every day in school! Was great to use it remotely today.
Sat here reflecting on a busy first 3 days back. 2 great INSET days and then spending the day today with my new year 7 form. Thoughts.... I BLOODY LOVE MY JOB ☺️☺️
As part of our trust HOD meeting today we discussed responses to this GCSE Q and that it would be beneficial for students to be confident in interchanging between ratio, equations and beyond! So I’ve quickly made this completion table inspired as ever by
@StudyMaths
Link to Dropbox file where I will be saving our Year 8 recall as and when they are created. This is linked directly to our own year 7/8 SOW but lots have asked me to share. Thanks as always to
@Corbettmaths
as I am always snipping from your amazing site!
So today I’ve had 30 minutes of free CPD on the go by listening to
@mrbartonmaths
podcast with
@EmathsUK
on the way to and from school. Loving it! 👌🏻👍🏻
Haven’t read as much since taking on HOD role, feel it’s so important to make time for it & promote this with colleagues! So me and my NQT read from making every lesson count in our mentor session this week. Fab! So good to recap key ideas. Thanks
@MrThorntonTeach
for the idea!
Reflecting on a fantastic day at
@researchEDWarr
Our profession is going through a rocky time at the moment, but it’s days like today that inspire me to continue doing what we do! ❤️
Tonnes of ideas and thoughts to take away - a day well spent 😊

This time last year we were departing for our half term skiing trip to Italy. And then life hasn’t been the same since we returned from that trip! So grateful for the amazing team at MCHS. Happy half term everyone 👍🏻🥳
We have watched the first half of jo’s angles in parallel lines in depth as a department. Great CPD for us all! Can’t wait to finish off next half term 👍🏻☺️
On my way to Sheffield to record another two Topics in Depth CPD videos with
@mrbartonmaths
. Today we’re chatting about the order of operations & angles.
If you missed the first two, here they are

SSDD style task with year 10 this morning after some lessons recapping ratio and encouraging them to draw the pictorial representation to solve various problems. Thanks to
@StudyMaths
for ideas from his

Ooo interesting phrasing on
@EmporiumMaths
nov paper 1. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that phrasing before? Going to pick
@Just_Maths
brain on this today!
Massive thank you to Damian
@LivMathsSchool
for visiting us at
@MeolsCopHS
today to inspire and challenge some of our year 11 students with some fantastic maths problems!!
Truly one of the best days of my career. Thank you so much for an utterly inspiring day. So proud of our year 11 students who showed true bravery and commitment to themselves, their hopes and their dreams today ❤️
@MeolsCopHS
First day of my 20th year running humanutopia. Back in school
@MeolsCopHS
with year 11 and as excited as I’ve ever been to try and inspire these young people.
Our last LLME day for
@NWmathshub3
this year. A great day celebrating the work of the hub in 2022/23 and looking ahead to 2023/24 Amazing to see
@mrsknoxmaths
presenting a session on ratio tables
@SouthportLTrust

First lesson moving from concrete to abstract. These are our weakest year 7 students now asking “miss can we have some harder ones” . Of course you can!!! Just shows the power of CPAL.
Thanks to
@MathsMrCox
for giving me the opportunity to discuss our remote learning provision and how we have tried to overcome some of the challenges! We’ve really come a long way since March 2020. Now to look ahead to getting back into the classroom 👍🏻👍🏻.

We have 2 morning dept briefings this term. Weds am used for admin tasks etc. Fri am dedicated to reading. Reading works on a fortnightly basis:Week 1 we don’t meet- I ask staff to spend 10 minutes reading a specific extract from a blog/book.Week 2 we meet as a dept to discuss
Fab day at
@LivMathsSchool
, year 11 students had taster sessions in A level Maths, Physics and Computer science (loved this!) and a tour of the university.
@MeolsCopHS
students behaved fantastically and got stuck in⭐️ thanks to our friends at the Maths School for a great day 😁
First lunchtime session delivering level 2 Further Maths, we started to get to grips with the binomial expansion. Well done to our amazing Meols Cop Mathematicians
@MeolsCopHS
A great reminder that we must understand the difference between storage and retrieval strength. Important point: “If a test is difficult enough that a student is unable to answer the questions, then there is no immediate benefit—it is successful retrieval that the student needs”
Lovely afternoon leading the first work group meeting for
@NWmathshub3
. Great to take some time out and talk some maths from y5-8. Many thanks to
@L1nd54y
for co-hosting 👍🏻.
Lovely SSDD exercise with year 9 this morning. Currently working on setting up and solving equations. This also required recall on area of a triangle, angles and Pythagoras! HUGGEEE thanks to
@mrbartonmaths
for setting up ! 👍🏻😁
Nice bit of resource making this afternoon... because you can never have too much recall practice!! Thanks as always to mr Corbett for his illustrations 😁😁.
@mrbartonmaths
“first lessons slice of advice” well worth a listen!! I truly believe that re-establishing routines, expectations and being consistent is going to more important this year than ever! And thanks to
@mrshawthorne7
for the sketchnote ☺️☺️
It’s getting to that time of year thinking about first lessons so I had another listen to this 2018
@mrbartonmaths
podcast. It’s amazing how many of the things I do now are in here.
This time around I’ve done a sketchnote 😊. Also included my favourite first task.

Nice for
@meolsresearch
to get a mention here. Just a small snippet of the superb work that has been going on with our remote learning provision. Well done team! And some great insights from other schools also 👍🏻👏🏻
