So today I did the London marathon. It was ace. My time was 2h 55m 19s. Which is ok as I’m quite old! Feel tired! The people cheering on from the crowds are incredible in their generosity, and the organisation is incredible. Thank you everyone involved :-)

I do think that before too much time is spent planning how pupils will come back into school in June, greater clarity is needed about *why*. Once that is clearer, the quality / amount of provision can be better planned and implemented.

I know this is an obvious thing to say, but pupils aren’t at risk of underachieving because they are ‘pupil premium’... rather, their learning may be impacted by socio-economic disadvantage. It’s important to focus on addressing / negating impact of disadvantaged on *learning*.

Some reflections from this term so far. 1. Removing the deficit discourse about disadvantage is vital. 2. Outcomes are v important, but better to focus on the day to day inclusion of pupils in class 3. Avoid the presumption of language, background knowledge & self efficacy.

Pupil Premium. Give teachers the expertise, knowledge & capacity to meet the needs of pupils. And to help pupils to access all school has to offer. Effective practice is driven by need, not label. Superficial strategies are unlikely to have sustained impact. Do a few things well.

I think a key to success for Pupil Premium is less focus on accountability to external organisations & more on accountability to pupils, enabling them to be successful in class. Curriculum equity is vital. Too often, disadvantaged, low prior attainers get a narrower curriculum.

Pupils who often thrive in our education system - academically, socially, in personal development tend to have ‘3Cs’. Financial capital, Social Capital, Cultural Capital (background knowledge). Disadvantaged pupils thrive when schools see life through lens of pupils without 3Cs.

Pupils are not at risk of lower attainment because they are Pupil Premium. Rather, it is because of the impact of disadvantage on learning over time. With regards SEND, there needs to be careful consideration how additional needs may impact on learning. Target needs, not labels.
