Agreed. Smearing as ‘isolationist’ those who oppose US militarism overseas is one of the more egregious Orwellian tactics of recent years. It also implicitly links internationalism with military interventionism, another troubling rhetorical trend.

American isolationism: *Did not exist before WWII (when the US conquered a continent and took colonies). *Did not exist before 9/11 (when the US pursued global military dominance). *Is not happening now (when endless wars are hardly ending). To believe otherwise is dangerous.

Another fascinating @Trade__Talks episode. Cyrus Field, the guy behind the 1866 transatlantic telegraph, played a big role in the US free trade movement. As one contemporary described it, Field had "annihilated time and space...in the cause of free trade."

I love this. In 1843, fans of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt confused him with Friedrich List, who then got inundated with flowers and love letters. The confusion led to their meeting, during which "the geniuses of the tariff union and music viewed the events with amusement."
