1. On Writing About Trauma (A Thread): 24 years ago, I took my 1st ever writing workshop. Instructor told class: NO writing about childhood abuse & NO Fecal Matter. Sucked for me because I’d just distributed my pages for critique. At least I had not written about fecal matter.

People born in Israel just living their lives in the kibbutzim—they were the peace activists. And they were raped and massacred and kidnapped.

@MarkRuffalo Mark, please be careful. When you translate a complex moral dilemma into a numbers game, you normalize hostage taking. There is no way to quantify barbarism. It’s infinite. Israel has a moral imperative to get back its citizens. This is a proxy war. Israel is not the enemy.

@JoyceCarolOates Guernica’s recent retraction of a gorgeous & nuanced essay, written by an Israeli woman, left many in despair. To see a survivor of the massacre demonstrate expansive empathy, even continuing to risk her physical life with real activism, felt like hope. That got canceled.

@megpillow @writesloud Survivors are also going to have diverse responses to the news. My inclination is to start rereading her stories, trying to understand the psychology of the complicit mother. Can it be done? Who knows? As for the surviving children: I hope they all remain intact through this.

9. I worked with her for 20 years. I’d still be her patient, but she ultimately retired in 2019. I will never be “cured.” But my therapy is the reason why I’m still here. It was not easy.

@legroff Anyhow, I’ve sent many wounded children to her, and the results are transformational. Even if not homeschooling, she offers once weekly classes that inspire writing. My friend’s 12 year old went from daily crying (under FL state curriculum) to joining NaNoWriMo!

13. I was fortunate through dumb luck to have chosen a spouse (at age 21) who is the best person I know. Also, he made enough money for me to even obtain therapy in the first place. Good therapy is not accessible to most people in this country.

6. I was a college grad with a BA in English and Philosophy, so lacked background knowledge in psychology. There was no infrastructure for finding a “trauma-informed” clinician. Trauma-informed was not even a phrase yet.

10. I also devoted much time to learning about memory, the physiological impact of trauma, etc. I enrolled in a post bac program in psychology at Columbia, later completed an MSW, and then obtained an LCSW.

@jodie_cook I start my day by looking for a bird outside. The first bird I spot, I take a few minutes to calmly observe it, listen to any birdsong, and breathe deeply while doing so. For the rest of the day, when I’m feeling stressed/overwhelmed, I think about that “early” bird. This

@JoyceCarolOates I saw Midsommer after my daughter had attended a few years at a Waldorf school. There’s lots to admire in a well executed Waldorf program; however, one must tolerate its cultish flavor. I was amused by the esoterica UNTIL I watched Midsommar. It was Waldorf-inspired horror. I

8. I ended up reading academic material written for advanced psychotherapists. No psych background but great reading comprehension. That’s how I found my therapist—she’d written a seminal book (for other therapists) on treating trauma survivors.

12. Ultimately, I left the field. My nervous system could not endure. But I learned a great deal, and hopefully helped some people without causing any inadvertent harm to others. Therapists, I learned for myself, aren’t mind readers.
