Yes the world is going to shit but also a toddler just dropped his Hot Wheels car on a rush hour subway and a dozen different adult strangers dove for it/pointed to it/etc. until someone stopped it with their foot and then everyone handed it off to get it back to the kid, so…
Hey quick question for people who sit in the Amtrak quiet car and then talk for the entire trip—have you always been a piece of shit, or did something awful happen to make you this way?
Hi hello I'm writing about women's friendship breakups, and collecting stories and reflections. If you've had a close friendship come to an end and have feelings about it, consider filling out my survey? (And pls share this!)
Feels a little like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic to change my profile pic here at this point, but oh well, at least the eventual Internet Archive scraps will include my new author photo
I wrote about not being able to decide whether I want kids, and hoping that books about motherhood would show me an answer. Featuring Jenny Offill, Sheila Heti, Rivka Galchen, Louise Erdrich, Rachel Cusk, Carmen Giménez, and

First Love came out two months ago today! I think my favorite thing so far about having this book out in the world is how many readers have told me it made them immediately call their best friends to tell them they love them
Finally convinced my former chef husband to watch The Bear with me (yes it took this long) and after scoffing nonstop for four episodes he goes, as if I couldn’t tell, “You know, I’ve got a problem with this show”
Let's see if this place is still useful for this kind of thing... does anyone know of a publication that would be interested in a 2k-word piece that's somewhere between a personal essay and a book list... basically a log of an obsessive reading project with high personal stakes
So uh... where are we sending our short, mainstream/topical personal essays these days? I've been poking around and it seems the personal essay boom truly is dead
I received my copy of

’s stunningly lovely essay collection, First Love, but I’m waiting for my cat to pose with it cute before I post a picture.

My favorite memoirs are the ones where the writer had to break in through a side door—where straightforward narrative wasn't gonna cut it, so they found or built a new form. These are the kinds of stories we'll study in my upcoming

Well, the next few months are going to be absolute chaos. But at least it feels like there's a sliver of possibility to emerge from that chaos victorious—as opposed to the slow shuffle toward inevitable defeat

In addition to the doom and gloom, I'd love to see stories about things people are doing to prevent/lessen the damage. Just a little bit of hope, as a treat.

I briefly thought weed gummies might help me sleep, but each time I tested this theory I woke up to at least a dozen emails to myself with ideas I just had to get down... so I think yes?
The excruciating part is that Biden 100% should step aside, and the Dems who are saying so are taking an actual stand for once… and also if he continues to refuse, which it sure looks like he will, all of this outcry will backfire and hurt his campaign/help Trump
Annie is THE BEST!!! Thoughtful and kind but also sharp and direct, knowledgable and bold and just generally everything you could want in an agent. Query her!
After being closed for over half a year, I'm re-opening to queries in two weeks starting May 1st. Please be gentle...! 🐙
Focusing mainly on fiction these days: I love big, juicy, ambitious genre-defying literary novels that are as entertaining as they are profound(ly moving).
Random early teen years memory just floated up from the depths of a time this guy we knew bought a pair of boots on the internet & we all thought that was the funniest/weirdest thing we'd ever heard—the internet! who buys boots off the internet?? we roasted him so hard for it
Prepping for my

I have a good old fashioned 2010s style hot take coming out soon—I forgot how fun it is to write in a mildly inflammatory style about something totally inconsequential
Today in "writing tips that are really just ways to trick yourself:" if you're hesitant to make big cuts bc they'll knock your word count down... just move the cuts to the end of the doc instead of deleting them so they're out of your way but still part of your wc
ahhhh people getting indignantly defensive about a bad piece of writing on the internet and insisting it's actually brilliant and if you're not familiar enough with the obscure and irrelevant thing it's referencing to get the joke then really you're the problem... we are so back
WOW this really struck a nerve!! More than 100 responses came in over the weekend 😳
I definitely have more than I can use at this point, but I'm gonna leave it open a little longer anyway because clearly the people have things to say

Have been in LA for less than an hour and just witnessed an altercation about Scientology fliers and a taco truck—not sure exactly what was happening but the key words gathered in passing were perfect
Hey if you’ve ever assigned Negative Space at the university level and/or if you’d ever potentially consider assigning First Love, can you please give a shout? I know NS has been assigned a bunch but I didn’t keep a list and now of course I need one for a thing (😈)

watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E last night & can't think of another pair of actors I've ever seen w less chemistry & less overall charisma than Armie Hammer & Henry Cavill. Might as well've been two plastic Ken dolls bopping around set. Ultimate "go girl, give us nothing" energy

Fun fact: this essay is built almost entirely out of material that I cut from the essay "Mutual Mothering" in First Love. I tried to fit this whole conversation about books into footnotes, and my writers group wisely told me to knock it off.
The real question is where was all of this pressure before the primaries, all the reminders that he said he was only in for one term, all this recognition of how high the stakes are and questions about whether he’s up to the task
