The journey has not been easy.
When I was applying for residency, I was told “people like you don’t do well.”
Yet, through it all, my purpose has been to remind others

Came from Mexico at 3. There was no DACA. I learned to live in the shadows. Never call attention to myself. As hard as we tried, never thought it would happen. In 2008, I voted for Obama as the first citizen in my family! ❤️🙌🏽

MAJOR WIN👏🏾 I am beaming with joy for my undocumented classmates, friends and loved ones.
Now for creating a comprehensive path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the shadows in our country and abolishing ICE.
Many times I’ve thought about those who said it was TOO hard, I was TOO ambitious, that people like me don’t do well. Particularly when obstacles seemed insurmountable. Not today!
Today is for those who believed in me even when I didn’t yet see what they saw!

Last night I found out my mom’s cousin (my Tío) died of COVID. My family in Mexico/US is high risk, extremely vulnerable. I give them what money I have, provide advice. Feel helpless. Put my head down, focus on clinical duties/research/productivity. Living reality in two worlds💔
Why is this not getting the attention and outrage we have recently seen in other published work?! The author, an NYU professor, claims “minorities—especially blacks and Hispanics—typically respond only weakly to chances to get ahead through education and work”

Everyone asks “what does it feel like to be done with residency?”
Amazing!
I know being a first-year attending will be hard. I acknowledge there is much to learn & work to be done. I’m aware hardships will come as they do.
Today I choose to be happy, grateful, & filled with love!
Ten years ago today was my very first day of med school. Still remember the butterflies on entering the patient’s room. When I got up to leave she said “you’ll be a good doctor because you listen and you care.” 💜🥺

Unfortunately, it’s always easier to explain failures by blaming others. 🤷🏽♀️ Less of a reason to grow if you think the world is just unfair. I hear that there are <1% Latinas in academic leadership position and I think, “so you are saying there’s a chance!”
In my attempt to go vote I was sent to 3 different places. I could feel the frustration rise. For a second I thought “maybe I should just go home”.
Then I remembered all those years prior to getting my citizenship, where I had no voice & no power. Not today!
