Those who reverently use the word "democracy" should use the far more accurate term "majoritarianism." Advocates of "democracy" are basically arguing for rule by the majority--51% over the rights of the other 49%. Democracy then becomes a system to be avoided whenever possible.

What would be truly heroic is if Disney used its profits from Avengers to pay all of its workers a middle class wage, instead of paying its CEO Bob Iger $65.6 million – over 1,400 times as much as the average worker at Disney makes.

@profwolff Profit does indeed drive capitalists to raise prices; it also drives them to cut prices--key to the success of capitalist profiteers like discounters Sam Walton & Jeff Bezos. The 10-year annualized increase in consumer goods prices through August 2021 has been zero (chart).

If women are paid 22% less than men for the same work, then simple math shows that an employer can afford to hire 13 women for practically the same cost of hiring 10 men. W/that huge competitive advantage, even the worst male chauvinists might be reluctant to hire any men at all!

Women are paid roughly 22% less than men on average. How can we solve pay equity? We need policies that lift wages for most workers while also reducing gender and racial/ethnic pay gaps.

@RBReich To decode the phrase, "universal health care": It means medical care owned & operated by the gov't. So in this context, "universal nutrition care" would mean gov't fully operates food-production/distribution. History shows that brings famine; hence the very opposite of pro-life.

@ninaturner Nina, it was slavery, not capitalism, that saw people as capital. Slavery had 10,000 years of history BEFORE the advent of capitalism. And by the 1800s, pro-capitalist economists called for slavery's abolition, which inspired racist Carlyle to dub economics "the dismal science."

@RBReich Do you realize that the true torrent of tickle-down has come from the Federal Reserve spending $trillions in printed $ on the purchase of bonds--a truly treacherous trickle-down that you've been tragically silent about? Hard to overstate how damaging that has been!

@evanrodgers Evan, when Henry David Thoreau went to jail for refusing to pay a tax that helped fund the Mexican-American war, was he also stealing from the American people?

@ComicDaveSmith In my lifetime (76 yrs as of Thursday), and w/respect to lies by the corporate press in terms of consequences, nothing quite compares w/the lies to further US wars in Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) from the mid-1950s-mid-1970s, w/millions killed as a result.

@caitoz Caitlin, if you're convinced that landlording is such a great & effortless capitalist joy ride, why not pool your funds with those of similar belief, buy up some properties, take in the torrent of cash & then donate the ill-gotten gains to worthy endeavors of your choice?

New of the FDA crackdown on vaping reminds me of Milton Friedman's declaring: The government has no more right to tell me what goes into my mouth than it has to tell me what comes out of my mouth.

I dislike that widely circulated photo of me (in which I look slightly constipated), much preferring the one accompanying my Twitter account, taken more recently. Otherwise, my name is Gene & I approve this message!

Mommy was a Commie, b. 106 yrs ago today. My son Jim once asked her, “Granma, as a Communist, should you really be investing in the stock market?” Her reply: “What, only the capitalists should get rich?!”

@ComicDaveSmith This chart tracks the decline in daily Covid-related hospitalizations in the 5 boroughs of NYC through Nov. 23, posted by the NYC Health Dept. I do seem to recall that a few months ago, some new variant was supposed to kick it sky-high.

To @benshapiro May I respectfully suggest a New Year's Resolution? That you resolve to apply your razor-sharp mind to the debating arena at the Soho Forum, which has offered you the opportunity to put @scotthortonshow in his place? (See three previous tweets to you.)

Ludwig von Mises, b. 141 yrs ago today in the palindromic yr 1881, was the 20th century's greatest economist. Had he not fled Hitler for NYC in 1940--teaching a seminar at NYU attended by students who eventually helped teach me--my own intellectual development would've suffered.

If Lisa Thompson gets paid to serve as Vice President of Research at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, isn't this research-for-money an act of coercion by its very nature, since it means she doesn't really want to provide you this research on sexual exploitation?!

Massie is Sassy ("lively, bold & full of spirit; cheeky"). I never miss @RepThomasMassie 's appearances w/ @mkibbe , @ggreenwald , @TuckerCarlson because he uniquely & drolly reports his trouble-making escapades in the belly of the beast: the US Congress.

Listen to @RepThomasMassie explain how obsessed the US Congress is with one foreign country. They've held more votes on Israel than on the US, the country they're supposed to be representing. Worse, some of those votes have directly attacked Americans' free speech rights.
