There's an opportunity for major grocery stores to actually come up with a plan to lower Canadian grocery prices. My advice is that their plan should start (and possibly end) with three words: End Supply Management! (See next tweet for more.)

@PPathole @EmmaMayMMA The Tesla likely has about 1000lbs on that Ford, it's also 4wd vs 2wd and the Tesla is rocking custom (not production) tires. Impressive, but I'm sure we can consider this a fair comparison. Fairer comparison might be Cybertruck vs an F250 4x4, both on production tires.

@WBrettWilson Hi, thanks for the reply. You might have misunderstood. The economy is quite clearly contracting right now, and more to come. If you disagree, that's fair enough but I am very interested in hearing why you think it is growing.

@maxfawcett Fun Fact: Carbon pricing revenues in general stay within the province in which they are collected. This means that, in all likelihood, they represent a net fiscal inflow to provinces that have high emissions intensity inter-provincial exports.

As a carbon tax proponent, it may be surprising but there isn't a lot here I disagree with. But, it's not incumbent on me to highlight my disagreements, it's on the Federal government to defend this (indefensible and inconsistent) policy stance. They opened the door to this.

Trudeau has provided a carbon tax exemption on home heating for families in one part of the country, but not here. It’s unfair, it’s unacceptable, and here’s what we’re going to do about it.

One of my favorite things ever written on this is a blog post by @ABeconomist To (poorly) paraphrase Todd Hirsch: Universities are not trade schools, and they aren't supposed to be.

Yesterday, I was on the National news, presenting the results of a sophisticated general equilibrium model applied to a critical issue for Canadian politics and economics. Today, I locked my keys (and my dog) in my truck while I was at the bank.

Some personal news: My dog's arthritis has greatly improved over the last 6 months and she now regularly jumps up on the couch again (something she physically couldn't do for a while there).

I know everyone already knows this, but @trevortombe is a machine. I put some notes on a google doc that I wanted to discuss with him, went to walk the dog, came back and he had already made the edits I was musing about. It's... unreal.

Reminder: "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" is about Competition Policy and Antitrust. The Villain purchases what should be a public company in order to ruin it with the goal of increasing market power for a rival product he alone has capacity to provide... Remind you of anything...

We didn't have to fight this much. This is a self inflicted wound that may bleed out (excuse the metaphor). The Heating Oil exemption instantly validated criticism that the system was designed to protect against and that a plurality of Academics were helping to defend against.

If we're going to fight *this much* over carbon pricing, we are in big trouble when we really have to step up to fight climate change.

As one of the Nerds who played an admittedly very very tiny role in providing policy advice on carbon pricing. I have one response to this:

I also don’t think it’ll work as a tactical retreat. But that’s a semi-separate issue. I agree with what @cselley said earlier. This is likely the beginning of the end of the carbon tax as we’ve understood it in recent years and the nerds might need to start making a new plan.

Additionally, Dr. Charlebois is incorrectly informed about how SPSD/M works and about the methodology of other input-output based projection methods accounting for the indirect effects of carbon pricing. I suspect he may not be informed about the workings of the OBPS system.

The Oil and Gas Cap may reduce emissions in one sector faster than would otherwise occur, but I'm not sure the Oil and Gas emissions cap will lead to faster Nation Wide or Province Wide emissions reductions. Here's way. 1/8

New EJ paper by @GK_Fellows presents a modified Cournot model examining the effect of pipeline constraints on imperfectly competitive regional gasoline markets. An empirical test of the model demonstrates how it explains gas price increases in BC Canada.
