Someone used the line “we all have the same 24 hours” today on me when we were talking about exercising and meal prep. I asked him how he managed to get in his 2 hours at the gym after work with his disabled child who needs 24/7 supervision. He said “oh”.

Today the boy’s nurse (paid for by the Ontario government) didn’t show up at school to give him insulin. The private company contracted to give health care couldn’t find the nurse bc stopped answering their phone. #onted #onpoli #autism #t1d

The boy just used his AAC to request “sugar”. His therapist thought it was just pressing a button randomly but after he did it three times she came to get me to check just in case. He had quite low blood sugar and needed some sugar! This is huge #autism #t1d

The boy kissed me for the first time ever today. It involved a sniff then a kiss which was more of a nose-lip boop on my cheek. But then a giggle and a tight squeeze of my hand. He then fell back asleep and I laid next to him in total disbelief #autism #MothersDay

My mum got a walker 3 weeks ago. Because she’s almost 80. She’s gone from not leaving the house to walking more than 3 km to her grocery store because of the confidence her walker is giving her. Mobility aides are actually about mobility. #Disability

The boy dropped to 3 today at school and his EA followed every protocol and even then couldn’t get him up above 3. His EA was so upset until I pointed out that all of their interventions meant he didn’t fall into coma range. #onted #t1d that’s what EAs do.

Today at @chaptersindigo the boy accidentally knocked over some watering cans on display. Two teens who didn’t work there, walking by caught two of them before they even hit the ground and quickly went to work picking up and putting the other 6 back. #autism #ottawa

The boy doesn’t know tomorrow is his 8th birthday. Today at the store the girl stood in front of a shelf for 8 year olds lost. And she cried a bit when I guided her to the 6 to 12 month old shelf. But when we left she said “I think he will love what I got him” #autism

Today at the park the boy decided he was done and got up and left. My brother was with him so he just let him walk and followed him. The boy walked the 6 blocks home with no problem. I had no idea he knew how to get home. #autism

The boy has been having scary lows. I called the diabetes team @CHEO . In 25 minutes I was talking to a nurse/educator and we came up with a new plan for meals/insulin. I feel so supported yet so disappointed because @fordnation had a model for #autism & he did nothing #onpoli

Today at school the boy got up out of circle time and went to the bathroom all by himself with absolutely no prompting. He’s never done that at school before. His EA was almost in tears telling me because she was to happy. #autism #onted

The girl has a cold (not Covid or the flu) and has swimming today. She suggested we call in sick. I said “I think it’s a good decision because swimming won’t be fun if you’re not feeling good”. She said: “I just don’t want to get other kids or instructors sick” #autism #onpoli

I’ve spent the year telling the teachers at the new school the girl is smart but needs time. She got Ds on her report card. I told them I wasn’t worried. She needed time. Today she got 13/16 on her French test. She accidentally wrote the gr 8 test. She’s in gr 7 #autism

The girl’s school has gr 7/8 plan, prep, serve & clean up lunch 3 days a week. It’s been life changing - she rocked as the head chef, chose a balanced meal all of her classmates could eat, learned how to do a full kitchen clean & tried lots of new foods. #autism

Today on our road trip the boy, who is non speaking, poked me through the headrest. The girl said “maybe he’s telling you his blood sugar is low”. So I tested him. 3.1. Non speaking #autism and #t1d is terrifying. Big sisters are amazing.
