I am a Junior Doctor. I will striking this week because I am worried about the future of the NHS. If we cannot retain staff, the NHS won’t be able to continue. I spend a lot of time thinking about changing jobs, despite loving my work, as the pay doesn’t match the responsibility.
If you’re a (prospective) med student, don’t let current negativity around the NHS put you off 💙 Overnight, I… escalated a stroke for thrombolysis; did CPR (for the first time); assessed 5 temp spikes & identified a heart attack 🚨 I love this job. There’s nowhere I’d rather be
On a new rotation, a senior said that my thoughts “hadn’t passed through a single neurone” before being spoken.
I’ve been dwelling on it and I don’t think that was okay.
I might not have articulated my point particularly well, but no one deserves to feel belittled for trying.
Finished my first day as surgical FY1 on call. I’m still alive and, more importantly, so is everyone else 😅 ~ lots of muscle ache from standing for the majority of 13.5hrs. I hope this gets easier!

It’s official! Doctor Eleanor Louise Morris MBBS BSc(hons) 🥳🥰 ~ coming to Sheffield Northern General in August. Final exams passed; such a huge relief...🥂 Time to celebrate xxx

Yeah, if they had said this before the session then that’s a whole different situation. I’m sure that being a therapist can be very emotionally demanding, but the nature of this just sounds inappropriate!
@todd_j_cooper
I agree that student loans are awful atm (mine is about 80k) - but I don’t think that withholding a vote is helpful. My reasoning is that Labour, whilst not great atm, are less harmful than the Tories. We desperately need to get the Conservatives out of government.
@adamfare1996
This is so upsetting 😔 as a “bright, communicative person” who works full time, I am awaiting an autism assessment which I feel will massively improve/ validate my mental health. The stigma is still so overwhelming even in the medical community.
Just over seven years ago, I couldn’t believe I was starting at medical school. Today, I got an interview offer for an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Psychiatry. Whether it’s successful or not, I’m so proud of getting this far 🥹🥰

By contrast, I specifically asked for a GP, was told that my appointment was with a GP, and it was actually an ANP. There needs to be transparency for patients and a clear understanding of roles

Completely support the nurses in striking, you deserve better. Also support doctors in our upcoming ballot. One of my FY1 jobs paid <£250 more than this (no unsocial hours), despite 6 years of university, frequent prescribing and technical skills. It’s not right.
“Are you going into clinical teaching? If not, you should” and “I wouldn’t have guessed you were just an FY1” are the comments that have made my night shift 🥰

I do want to provide good quality healthcare. I love being a doctor, and I receive excellent feedback from patients and colleagues.
My post is highlighting that the pay and conditions are making other countries and professions much more appealing.
On my cardiology job as an FY2, I worked ~47 hours/week (188/month), plus 1 in 4 weekends, and often evenings +/- night shifts. On night shifts, I was the SHO for cardiology, renal and spinal injuries. On long days, I covered CCU.
I took home £2430 in November. That’s ~£13/hour.
The doctor who leads the attempt to restart your heart is paid just £24/hr.
Ballot papers will be going out in 5 days time. If you've put off joining, now is the time.

I’m absolutely not saying that I’m ‘more valuable’. Apologies if that’s how the post came across. I’m referring to gender-based assumptions of roles, which I’ve found extremely common since qualifying.
@EmergMedDr
I understand posting about experiences. It’s interesting and helpful for those who want to understand the role.
But the tone & content of these was wrong. The DNAR was too specific and personal. And the poll for the PR was totally inappropriate.
Self-awareness is important.
Hello Twitter! I am reaching out to find medical students with an interest in gender equity in medical education - to get involved in some conversations. If you are someone involved in organisations or activities related to this, drop me a message please 😊xx
I have been diagnosed as Autistic today. I was so nervous about the appointment, after an 18-month wait, but it was a really positive experience. I felt listened to, I was offered a break when I felt anxious, it wasn’t rushed. Pleasantly surprised.
@DrBenLovell
It’s often around accessibility. Being on camera can be quite intense, or some people do not have a suitable home environment. It can also increase screen fatigue, if it’s part of a long event. Usually a conditional phrase works e.g. “turn your camera on if you feel able to” 😊
My take home pay for March is £1817, deducting the strike days.
(40 hours/week, no out-of-hours work).
I am an FY2 doctor.
I spent 6 years at university.
I have £77,162 student debt.
I pay GMC fees.
My exams in training will cost ~£2000.

11-15 April will be the next round of Junior Doctors strike action in England.
The Government is still refusing to make a credible offer - or any offer at all - to resolve our dispute. Read more:
@danny_mercer
This is horrendous. If they do not feel able to cover basic safety, which is absolutely not a failure on their part, then they need to get hold of a hospital senior in some form. Medical school just doesn’t prepare us for this 😔 I hope they are okay!!
@SteveBarclay
98% voted yes, of over 70% turnout.
It is disappointing that you are ignoring the voices of over 43,000 doctors, who are clearly telling you that pay restoration is needed.
This is a HUGE result. You must begin to listen.
@markwerkself
This is for a 40 hr/wk rotation with no out-of-hours work, as a doctor 18 months after graduation (minus 3 strike days). I took home £1817 last month.
Just starting to process this 😯 - I am a HLA scholar 🎉🎉 ... since intercalating I had lost a lot of confidence in my abilities, and having acknowledgement from HLA has been AMAZING. Massive thank you to
@SKIP_Global
for the PPD opportunities which helped me get this far xxx
@DrEilidhMaria
How bizarre. Emptying sanitary bins should be just as frequent as other waste bins surely - I do not see why there would be resistance to supplying sanitary bins. It seems like out-dated practice, and is important to highlight so that it can be changed.
@KatPaton13
Similar to how doctors were encouraged not to do extra shifts to undermine the nursing strike, I would hope that PAs wouldn’t do extra shifts in a way that undermines the junior doctor strike effort.
@gardner_bea
As a dog owner, I’ve had that thought of “who is available to look after the dog if something bad happens?” … so can absolutely empathise with patients here. We should really have advice leaflets in the ED with suggestions of services 🤔

Seems a bit strange how he didn’t notice encroaching on her space for so long? I would absolutely notice if I was intruding on another person’s space to the extent that they called a flight attendant 😬
But, if it happened as written, I agree that she would share blame tbh.

We aren’t apprentices, we have spent 6 years at university to become fully qualified doctors. Junior doctor just means that we are doctors below consultant level. Very different from apprentices.
I have now limited replies to this post, as the reaction was much larger than I had anticipated!! Thank you for all the support 💙 and I am grateful for those who have asked genuine questions and engaged in productive conversations.

Students Doctor (medical student) = not qualified
Trainee Doctor (junior doctor) = fully qualified, often in a pathway to become a consultant
Big difference between the two, though the terminology should be clearer. Some junior doctors are actually very senior in their field
@chrisgoona
@UnchainedScotty
Junior doctors work 40-48 hour weeks as a minimum, including night shifts, weekends and evenings. I have started shifts with >80 jobs, including reviews of multiple sick patients. The government is failing the public, not the doctors. We are trying.
Even 5 years later, thinking back to A-level results gives me all kinds of nerves 🙈 I remember getting the UCAS update in the middle of Exeter High Street :’) - I hadn’t even met my offer, and will be eternally grateful to whoever decided I was worth the risk xxx

This morning I helped with the

Online Summer School 🩺📖 ~as part of the “doctors panel”.
It’s amazing, thinking back to 2015 and how much I wanted to be one of the “doctors”. So much has changed since then & much of it has been challenging… but I love this job.
Today I had an opportunity to supervise an FY1 with her first cannula (we are lucky to have phlebs most of the time). I talked her through the technique, and she was successful. It was a really nice feeling, and this is why I love teaching 🥰
For me, one of the hardest things about night-shifts, is dealing with the messy house and life admin afterwards - because I get literally nothing else done 🥱😴
So I therefore treated myself to a Henry Hoover today. This is peak excitement for anyone aged over 25!
Just received this in the post ~ much needed weekend motivation boost 🥰 still not used to seeing ‘Dr’ in front of my name, let alone honourary clinical teacher 🥲xx
@Lennybow
Junior doctors are rarely able to work privately, so no.
I have not experienced ‘most’ consultants being part time and, if they are, then I think it’s a shame that the NHS is not offering enough incentive to retain them.
I studied medicine because I believe in universal healthcare and wanted to help.
On strike again, spending my time revising for an exam costing >£500 plus revision resources, with a low pass rate.
& the news re House of Lords.
… I can see why people are leaving the NHS.
In my department, I’ve been told that the consultants are not striking because ‘patients are dying on the waiting list’. They are surgeons. It’s a tough decision that they feel responsible for. The fact that they are too vital to strike, is another reason to

Y’day I was due to finish work at 3pm, after 7 days at work, but got home at 6pm. The extra time didn’t bother me - but the repeated bleeps about the same patients TTO’s, as they’re “still waiting” did 😔 … we had 2 FY1’s, no seniors, and some sick patients.

Agree, it’s not a singular task - it’s the overall knowledge to recognise when DNAR is necessary and appropriate, as well as how to approach the conversations with patient and family, and judging whether this needs to be done OOH or by the regular ward team.
Deciding whether to apply for a General Psychiatry ACF post, but it feels daunting as much as exciting. A lot of imposter syndrome.
Would love to hear others thoughts on the role, and whether I should just take the leap 🤓

First year of work after 5-6 years of university, with competitive entry of typically AAA at A-level. And it doesn’t rise as steeply as you might anticipate. I’m nearly 2 years out of medical school, and only paid about £1/hr more
Good news from yesterday. I’ve passed the Foundation Programme ✅ & got the completion date for my apartment (first home) 🏡 ~ At times over the past couple of years, this didn’t seem possible. Lots of emotions! I’ll be starting Psychiatry training in August in W. Yorkshire 🧠 xx
Just received this email from the GMC. Over £50 to register when we are not yet qualified and earning does not seem right.

I hear what you’re saying. It’s a difficult balance between immediate patient safety and long-term gain for the NHS. I hope that Steve Barclay attends negotiations with the BMA soon
I really dislike picking faults with the admin team, as I know they are also extremely busy. But failing to pay me £800 of locum money, and saying I’ll get it next month, really isn’t acceptable 😢
How is this appropriate. It’s an optional survey that our departments do not necessarily give us time to complete. There are so many other ways to demonstrate our commitment to QI and feedback - it’s an outcome in itself. The “reflection” just leads to blame and guilt.

Hayfever is particularly bad this year! Nothing OTC is having much effect for me & I know others have it worse. Losing sleep/ feeling rubbish is often reason to see GP, though with hayfever there’s not much doctors can do! Sadly pts feeling helpless is often transferred to GP.

I took a day sick in FY1 for a personal issue, which got put on a spreadsheet by HR & could be seen by other staff. I was very upset! The email thread then accidentally got sent to my supervisor, and I has to highlight that this was incredibly inappropriate. Classic NHS 😬
This strike is about pay.
As many have correctly said “if you don’t like it then leave”.
Doctors ARE leaving the NHS.
We are very well qualified for starting positions in other professions.
But we don’t WANT this.
We need to turn this around with better pay and staff retention.
The situation in General Practice is very worrying.
Colleagues are actively avoiding the profession, because we know how stretched and challenging the work is.
I think GPs do an incredible job in extremely difficult circumstances 💙
GPs AREN’T STRIKING - THOUGH SUPPORT COLLEAGUES - THEY ARE JUST LEAVING
They don’t do that lightly or quickly
Just slowly one at a time - then a few - then whole teams
It’s already happening - 2211 fewer than 2015
Practices handing back contracts - many considering this action

I think there’s a slight misunderstanding.
You were protected by those who wore masks.
Others were not protected because you chose not to wear a mask.
For example, if you sneezed while wearing a mask, it would stop the droplets hitting others.
